antonkochubey··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
Sorry for my ignorance, but what is the usefulness of undo persistence after a IDE restart? Don't you normally save your changes and finish a piece of work before exiting an DE?

Edit: some great examples in the replies here, thanks! Perhaps I should start using it in editors that support it, never gave it a thought before.

For example because I literally can’t sleep well above 20°C.

>Midea pre-filled mini-splits went from €700 to 2000-3000+ and months of lead time. It's crazy.

They're back to normal prices now. At least in Germany. Make sure to grab one before the next Summer hits :)

There are some lucky people (e.g. me) who got high-RAM Pi4's and Pi5's before the prices spiked
antonkochubey··on Proxmox VE now available for ARM64
FWIW there exist UEFI implementations for Raspberry Pi 4 and 5, they can be used to boot Windows 11 aarch64 images as well as 'generic' Linux distro images, so I suppose they will support this one as well.

>EVs are practically computers on a wheel

There’s nothing about EV drivetrain that requires more complicated software than ICE powertrain. It’s just consumerism telling people that their next vehicle (whatever drivetrain) should be an iPad, a home cinema, and a PlayStation all-in-one.

antonkochubey··on EU commissioners shut down air conditioning for employees, leave theirs on
My multisplit system costs <€60 a month to run even during the hottest months, which is way below heating costs during winter. And that's keeping entire apartment at constant 22ºC - people with higher "comfort temperature" can keep the bill significantly lower.
antonkochubey··on EU commissioners shut down air conditioning for employees, leave theirs on
Realistically a decent mini-split that won't break in a year and won't make too much noise starts at ~€600-800 + €400 installation in a low-labor-cost country (Latvia), in high-labor-cost countries such as Germany the installation bit might be twice-thrice as expensive.

it's not that bad, EX63 dedicated servers were a great deal until this week (especially with 192 GB ECC RAM upgrade) and it has a 2025 CPU, for example
antonkochubey··on Electric motors with no rare earths
In most EVs motors are watercooled, so that energy can indeed be scavenged – problem is, during low-speed driving, the heat output is not high enough to get noticeably above ambient temperature.
antonkochubey··on macOS 27 Beta breaks the ability to boot Asahi Linux
>ARM based systems, including the Apple M series, don't.

You're thinking of old SBCs, most likely. ARM SystemReady devices (which is a requirement for Thunderbolt 4+ on ARM, so Macs are included) have +/- same level of auto-configuration and hardware resource discovery as x86 PCs.

antonkochubey··on Major P2P issues in Israel and possibly other Middle East countries
It’s fascinating how (mostly western liberal) game developers argue in favor of 99% taxes for general population “for maintaining infrastructure” and yet cannot fathom paying a fee for maintaining actual infrastructure that is necessary for their business to function.
antonkochubey··on CT scans of BYD car parts
The kind of software needed in a car (minimal or ideally none at all except for DME and CarPlay display) is indeed not something that Germans were able to build on their own in the recent times.

rootless docker's networking (slirp4netns) is still terribly buggy and in edge cases often locks up using 100% CPU until you discover that your laptop is a lapwarmer and kill it
