A 12TB Steam “teraleak” spills more than a decade of lost PC gaming history

Might not be the most interesting game in the leak but old versions of live service games are almost impossible to come by
https://steamdb.info/app/20590/
Downloaded it to extract all the old assets but it still needs an encrypted depot key
>error!! -- extract: missing depot key!, pass --key if you know it though
Some people reported that "--key 0000000000000000" or "--key 0" works on some depots... well not here
The old version of LoL has the best aesthetic. The new art style was bad enough to get me to quit the game.
Like firing portals while in midair, or catching a cube as you pass it during a jump.
Older versions of popular titles like Counter-Strike: Source would still be playable on their original hardware if the old clients + servers were available. As it is now, these games are no longer playable on original early-mid 2000s hardware because Steam no longer supports Win2k/XP, and even if it did, the games themselves have been heavily patched and updated over the years and have higher system requirements. Old clients still exist (even prior to "teraleak"), but the SRCDS versions are gone as far as I can tell.
I just think it'd be fun to host retro LAN parties using the hardware and software we had back then, or even just to revisit what it was like to be a server OP in those days.
Stuff like watching the order of names on public lists of attendees for dinner events, etc. If someone disappeared or moved off the top few names, perhaps they're in trouble or have been purged from the party ... or maybe they're just sick this week.
not anymore, apparently. even random ~~grifters~~ geopolitics experts on youtube now have people on the inside.
don't get fooled that only one side does that
After one of the nuclear treaties was signed, there was a guy whose photo was published in Pravda, shaking hands with Gorbachev; a different fresh photo of him shaking hands with Gorbachev every day for an entire month. He turned out to be the head of the ministry of strategic deception.
Huh how do you know somebody didn't email them the hn comment containing the @dang ?

My own gaming days are over, but I am very annoyed that the big corporations killed libgen effectively (it is not entirely gone, but the old content is nowhere near as it used to be, and Anna's archive is also nowhere near as good either, unfortunately).
Not sure what you mean, Anna's Archive includes all of Libgen's content
It seems to me that fighting with Valve is like fighting against what we would want to have.
Valve could shut it down any single day just by disabling trading but hey, that doesn't let you buy a 110m long superyacht (; https://www.yachtcharterfleet.com/luxury-charter-yacht-53601...
One giant megacorp with a benevolent dictator? Well, maybe you want that - but I do not. And we have a couple of examples of how it goes.
You can have a whole one try to guess who is this.
And if you guess it right (I doubt you can answer wrong, lol) you would know a whole bunch of different reasons - including personal qualities of that "benevolent dictator" too.
NB honestly, if anything it's "his" OS what gave a lot of opportunities to the kids in the developing countries everywhere, not just Africa alone - just by providing the means to run the apps and games on almost anything. OLPC on the other hand provided an example how a specialized device made with the best intentions was a piece of shit.
welcome to terarelease - a as-complete-as-possible steam2 content server dump
extractor howto: for the majority of depots you need to download blobs & dats for wanted version *as well as all past versions* as the files are stored as deltas inside the dat files, HOWEVER IF you encounter a depot that has duplicate blobs & dats, that means at some point in time valve did a full reset in which case you need to provide the CRC of the wanted blob (3rd file name component) to the extractor using --blobcrc, source code for the extractor is also left in this folder if you want to have a peek at it
examples: extract /mnt/big/blobs /mnt/big/dats 852 0 | for depots w/o reset extract /mnt/big/blobs /mnt/big/dats 841 0 --blobcrc 83ced978 | for depots that did reset
win64 build is provided, for linux you have to build it yourself as any kind of binary compatibility is inexistent except for wine (you are using linux, you should know how to build it yourself right? ...right?)
sharing: you are very much encouraged to share and mirror/seed this release as possible SHARING IS CARING
warm n good wishes to all hoarders who had stuff from this collection <3

It also acts as a url shortener for their hardware support pages.
s.team/deck, and s.team/machine take you to the appropriate support pages.
it's not like regular stuff where companies just sue you left and right, this stuff is hard to pursue and usually not worth it
it can get taken down but that's about it
* It appears the dats_dates.txt file is a list of depot item contents string sorted by depo numeric identifier.
* It also appears the depo identifier is the first underscore separated value on a given line
* It seems the more popular artifacts are referenced multiple times in the list due to the quantity of contents and versions associated with a given depo
All of that could be wrong, but nonetheless I wrote a small 2minute Node.js script to analyze the list. It takes about 0.03 seconds to execute, on my machine anyways, and produces as output a list of depo identifiers sorted by the frequency in which those identifiers occur in the dats_date.txt file.
These identifiers do not always resolve to a game title using the steamdb.info site but several do. Because though because steamdb.info applies rate limiting and then a temporary IP address block.

btw interestingly from the leak homepage:
"To the operators of browsers/indexers: please look into caching or mirroring the blobs, as a large volume of requests at this point are coming from these, which seem to be impacting downloads for everyone. It's a 15 GB directory that would save the time of many people. Many people should have them all downloaded by now.
We are facing pretty severe link oversaturation. If you managed to download something please try seeding them on the torrent and/or sharing the original files on third party services to spare us some load. The more torrent seeds the faster and more viable it shall be."
Storj is a much more straightforward implementation. So is Sia, I think.
Fun fact, you can get all the normal Half-Life 2 weapons in normal Portal using the `impulse 101` cheat command in the console (probably requires enabling `sv_cheats 1` before).
