There it is. Post modernism in clear form.
antimatter··on Hackers Are Hijacking Phone Numbers and Breaking into Email, Bank Accounts
You are 100% correct. But I'm genuinely curious why institutions such as banks/telcos couldn't spare the resources to offer both SMS 2FA and more secure options for those who do care. I can't imagine it's a matter of technical resources as it wouldn't take much. Is it institutional inertia? technical debt?

Most likely? The US taxpayers.

antimatter··on To fix L.A.'s traffic, we need tolls
Does anyone know if there are any tax benefits to companies who allow telecommuting in LA? I used to deal with 2 hours of LA traffic per day for my commute and it was absolutely soul crushing. My current company allows telecommuting and even though I'm only 18 miles away, it's a blessing to not to have to deal with LA traffic on a daily basis anymore.

Thanks for this. I had a subset of this list already blocked but didn't realize it had grown this much.
antimatter··on The hunt for dollars to build the $64B bullet train
It is an embarrassment for the state and this country that we are unable to build something so trivial for other countries without such massive costs.
antimatter··on Pornhub Bypasses Ad Blockers with WebSockets
> It's about getting your product out there.

This is admittedly an extremist view point on my part but If I even detect a hint of advertising, I am extremely unlikely to ever consider a product. I detest advertising in any form. So in cases like mine, the advertiser is better off not showing me any ads.

antimatter··on Tesla reports first quarterly profit in more than three years
One thing to note, I have a few friends who work at Tesla service centers. They cut A LOT of corners when it comes to service to show profits this quarter. For example, for the location that one of my friends works at (which happens to be one of the busiest locations in Southern California), they sold almost every single loaner vehicle as a used car.
antimatter··on Tesla envy grips Germany’s giants
I'm not sure what type of software updates we're talking about but BMW allows idrive updates (nav/media) via the USB port. They provide the updates for free on their site.
antimatter··on Tesla envy grips Germany’s giants
I've driven the model S on two different occasions. It was incredible. However, I went with my second BMW because of how incredibly awful the tesla interior was in terms of fit and finish. The car had 30k miles and there was constant rattling and noises coming from various areas of the interior made worst by the fact that the car was completely silent. I'll revisit Tesla in another 5 years when they've had time to work out their quality issues.
antimatter··on Termination of YouTube Service on 2012 BRAVIA TVs
Exactly this. I would absolutely love one of the new high end LG OLED panels with none of the smart tv features and no network connectivity (privacy & security). I'm really curious how big of a market this would be.
antimatter··on Netflix and Fill
This exact same thing happened to me after watching a WWII documentary. I'm actually really into the WWII genre but their recommendations are terrible in quality particularly the ones from Smithsonian.

I don't understand why Apple has not added a passcode requirement option to turn off the phone.
antimatter··on Web Programming Is Getting Unnecessarily Complicated
I keep seeing this use case of JS heavy web apps but have yet to come across one in production that adds any value when offline. Can you provide an example?
antimatter··on California's skyrocketing housing costs, taxes prompt exodus of residents
This. I've lived in Los Angeles almost my whole life. I visited the beach maybe once in the last 5 years. Why? Because to do so, you have to be willing to sit in at least 1-1.5 hours of traffic. When you get there, at least 30 min to find parking. There are simply too many people in CA at this point to enjoy anything it offers. Leaving the house for me means waiting (in traffic, lines, for parking, etc).
antimatter··on Traffic-weary homeowners and Waze are at war
Same. Waze is absolutely useless in Los Angeles. Every alternate route for my commute from the valley to the westside is full of worst traffic than the 405 yet it continuously recommends surface streets. These alternate routes that are supposed to save me 2-3 minutes often take much longer so it's completely inaccurate.

I'm curious if there is some threshold of traffic at which these algorithms can no longer be accurate. If so, Los Angeles has long passed this threshold.

I've stopped using Waze or any comparable apps long ago.

antimatter··on Diversity and Inclusion at GitHub
Agreed. These types of reports make it seem like Github cares only about skin color which to me is racist.
antimatter··on React Tutorial: Cloning Yelp
Rails is the actual framework. I can see why someone would hate the magic happening under the hood when attempting to get something done in Rails. When it comes to React, we're talking about the dev environment. I would love never having to configure webpack by myself ever again. Something like the rails scaffolding command would be excellent for working on React apps. I believe Ember has ember-cli to do this.

antimatter··on If So Many People Support Mass Transit, Why Do So Few Ride? (2014)
I live in Los Angeles. Where is this mass transit they speak of? There are exactly zero mass transit options for me to use to get to work (San Fernando Valley to Santa Monica) within a reasonable time.
antimatter··on The Third Generation Nest Thermostat
Can anyone with a Nest tell me if it's possible to turn off all the smart features and turn it into a dumb on/off switch? I really like the design but don't care for any of the complicated smart features and would much rather be able manually control it from my phone. I recall that this was not possible with reviews of the first gen Nest.
