antimatter··on Backsliding on free expression around the world needs to end
Hmm. I wonder why they are still risking their lives to attempt to get to the west if it's such a morally bankrupt hell hole.
antimatter··on Apple AirPods: iPhone accessory or the next big thing?
Here's some of the Apple gear from my family.

Macbook Pro from 2008: Still boots iPhone 4 (2010): Still functioning (although obviously does not run latest OS) iPhone 5s (2013): Still functioning (running iOS 12 just fine) iPhone 7: (2016): Still flawless

antimatter··on Show HN: I built a podcast app that skips over the ads
My problem with podcast ads is how repetitive they are. I'm at a point where I hate squarespace so much because nearly every podcast I listen to is sponsored by them. Same goes for Simplisafe and ZipRecruiter. It's extremely tiring and I would consider this app for automating skipping of ads because of this reason.
antimatter··on Running GitHub on Rails 6.0
It's been a long time since I've looked at Rails. Is there anything similar to Railscasts (free or paid) but up to date with latest Rails features?
antimatter··on The video game industry can't go on like this
From the article:

> Artists who work on gory cinematics integral to games like Mortal Kombat suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Is it really someone else's fault if someone chooses to work on a game like Mortal Kombat and then complains about having to create graphics like this?

Can we please introduce some agency into people's lives and stop constantly blaming society for issues?

antimatter··on Running Games on a MacBook Pro with an EGPU
Anyone know the type of mouse being used in the photo? https://justin.searls.co/uploads/egpu/IMG_4122.jpg
antimatter··on New for AWS Lambda: Use Any Programming Language and Share Common Components
> You can generally resolve it yourself by poking seldom used functions to keep them hot.

We've tried this and it helps somewhat but when AWS attempts to scale your function based on load, cold starts re-appear. We've moved away from Lambdas where a dependable response time is required.

antimatter··on Facebook reportedly discredited critics by linking them to George Soros
The overwhelming majority of migration into Europe is not due to any war or terror. It is economic migration primarily from sub-Saharan Africa which is why you comparatively see so few women and children among the migrants.
antimatter··on Why US Inequality Is Worse Than Other Developed Nations
Also, see NATO members who can avoid defense expenditure because US is their defacto defense force.
antimatter··on On Redis master-slave terminology
Ah, yes, the widespread cancer of critical theory strikes Redis.
antimatter··on How LeBron James' new public school is the first of its kind
Wow. So asking someone for a bit of self control and being a responsible adult is now considered an unreasonable request. Because it’s so difficult to at least not have unprotected sex when you know you’re not in a position to support a child.

We are truly lost as a society.

antimatter··on A Layman’s Intro to Western Classical Music
Can anyone recommend a good classical playlist on Spotify?
antimatter··on Apple Plans to Use Its Own Chips in Macs from 2020, Replacing Intel
Everything you listed under your general issues section is my exact experience when running Linux. I don't seem to have any of those issues on OSX.
antimatter··on TV advertising has hit a wall thanks to streaming options like Netflix
Exactly. I think NBA League Pass cuts out the advertising from the local tv networks during timeouts and half time to show the in arena feed (kiss cam, etc). But those are often times ads now as well.
antimatter··on California Losing Residents via Domestic Migration
This is my fear as well. As a Californian who's looking to move to Texas at some point in the future, I really hope the people leaving aren't taking "California values" to Texas with them.
antimatter··on Signal Foundation
On top of the myriad of missing features that for example Telegram has, the UI/UX for Signal (at least on the iOS app) is far behind. The app feels laggy and slow in comparison to Telegram or Messages (only other apps I use). It has giant text bubbles with large padding which IMO looks terribly ugly. Also, Telegram now has dark mode which I find very useful. And as mentioned, as silly as gif support is, it's a nice feature to have. If only Telegram used Signal's encryption by default.
antimatter··on Why I left Google (HN search results)
I did exactly this 2 years ago and it was just as painless as you described. Took a few months of slowly migrating various accounts to new email via forwarding. I’m just annoyed at myself for not having done it sooner.
antimatter··on Signal partners with Microsoft to bring end-to-end encryption to Skype
Yes, that would be great as well but I’ve long since given up on that happening.
antimatter··on DuckDuckGo moves beyond search to also protect you while browsing
Advertising. But not via tracking and personalization. They show ads to you based on the keywords you used to search and don’t follow you around the web.
antimatter··on Signal partners with Microsoft to bring end-to-end encryption to Skype
This. I wish Signal's own native apps had the user experience of Telegram.
antimatter··on Google Pay
I use Apple Pay regularly (multiple times per month) at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Starbucks and Coffee Bean. On more rare occasions when I do end up shopping for cloths in person, I've used it at department stores.
antimatter··on Many major websites are taking silent anti-ad-blocking measures
Can someone explain to me why they want to show you the ad even when they don't care if you look at it, let alone click on it? Are advertisers still paying for just showing the ad?
antimatter··on An open source re-implementation of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2
I wish someone did something similar for Populous: The Beginning.
antimatter··on Equihax
Exactly this. I don't know where people get the idea that government would do this any better. I think the best regulators could do is make SSNs obsolete. A solution where knowing every possible private data point about a person is useless when attempting to steal someone's identity.
antimatter··on Equifax security freeze PINs are the timestamp of when you request the freeze
I find technical discussions around this subject extremely fascinating but I'm a total noob in this space. Would you mind sharing any relevant links on the topics you mentioned?
antimatter··on Government launches login.gov to simplify access to public services
I know elsewhere in the thread you mentioned that you're not on the login.gov team but would you mind passing U2F support and removing SMS as a second-factor auth as a feature request? Thanks :)
antimatter··on Government launches login.gov to simplify access to public services
What you have to realize is that the US government is full of life long bureaucrats who are not democratically elected and are in no way held accountable like the representatives. And the representatives are perfectly happy to throw their hands up and hold hearings every time the bureaucrats do something wrong without actually taking the effort to change anything. To me, this is no different than Facebook and Google.
antimatter··on Equifax terms of service may include binding arbitration clause
Assume that it was and act accordingly.
antimatter··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
You may be onto something. I for one would welcome such filtering as I would appreciate staying away from leftist echo chambers such as Google.
antimatter··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
This man dared to challenge 50+ years of post-modern indoctrination. The result is hardly surprising. I salute his bravery though. Look forward to his discussion with Jordan Peterson. https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson/status/89490930975844352...
