andys627··on Open source project to map relationships and analyze w AI
I have been chatting with LLMs about therapy topics and found that they worked best when I loaded as much history info as possible into the chat box. I made a tool that guides the lay person through doing that:

Relationship graph - draw your relationships however you want and AI will understand

Cards - quick ways to ask and journal around therapy topiocs

Reports - will take all your info and create a deep report using various psychology/therapeutic modalities.

Chat - can chat w/all this data.

Why's that?
andys627··on Ask HN: What was your most successful project of 2024?
An AI powered web scraper. Chrome extension. Uses interesting LLM capabilities in natural language (website of your choosing)->structured data. It’s working pretty well!

andys627··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
This isn't far off from how it works. You can get prelim approval. But I believe you need to have final submittal 6 months later.
andys627··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
I intuitively agree but have learned that "Cities should be able to plan their own growth." is just too simplistic.
andys627··on No minimum parking requirements? No problem for Fayetteville, Arkansas
Chicken or egg.

The whole US was once walkable, then we massively subsidized driving for 2 generations, and now they are not walkable.

andys627··on No minimum parking requirements? No problem for Fayetteville, Arkansas
It's more about the city planners not having to be parking experts. Parking minimums are one of many subsidies to drivers in that they set a supply floor for parking spots. If driving is so popular then why do we have to shower drivers with money at every level of government?
andys627··on 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
They are maybe 40-50% lower. Does this move the needle for climate change? No. And it’s not just lifetime car emissions. It’s the car dependent life that cars require

andys627··on 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
Remember the emissions to manufacture the vehicle... they're higher for EVs. Lifecycle emissions for EVs therefore aren't much lower than ICE.
andys627··on 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
This will not save the planet. We need to consume less, and walk/bike/take transit more. Fine, this may not be for you, but at least don't insist on a the rest of subsidizing you (untaxed climate externality).
andys627··on A Recap of the Mars Terraforming Debate
We can create a magnetosphere at Lagrange point between Mars and Sun that has a tail that would protected Mars from solar radiation. Radiation from other stars is still a problem I think? https://phys.org/news/2017-03-nasa-magnetic-shield-mars-atmo...

It's unlikely enough that we should spend this money on Medicare for All, climate change, etc. We already have a gillion fighter jets too...

This is awesome and necessary but don’t get distracted from the real low hanging fruit that is consuming less - less driving, smaller houses, vegetarianism, fewer toys.

andys627··on Insulation: First the body, then the home (2011)
> Basically remove all cladding and upgrade it.

This is not extremely difficult nor expensive on every building. It's certainly more of a job than cutting holes in the wall on the inside and blowing in insulation. By insulating from the exterior you can address vapor issues. There are benefits: you can avoid having to patch holes (2 per stud bay... ie a lot) and repaint the inside. There's opportunity to upgrade electrical or fix any issues. Siding also has a limited lifetime. Wood siding can be reused.

With some/many buildings it is certainly too hard and expensive, but for many this is not. We shouldn't write off the whole idea because it doesn't apply to all buildings.

andys627··on Insulation: First the body, then the home (2011)
New homes are much better insulated. An interesting aspect of a "Green New Deal" would be to subsidize electrifying the HVAC & insulating our older buildings. It puts people to work, saves them money for the occupants, and reduces emissions.
andys627··on Sharrows, the bicycle infrastructure that doesn’t work and nobody wants
That sign sucks. It should say “cyclists will use full lane”
andys627··on Ask HN: As a person, what can I do to improve a city?
Pick up trash, plant a tree, install a bike rack, comment at city council meeting (extra easy these days because they take voicemail now), volunteer to feed the homeless, install/stock a free little library.

andys627··on Portland passes low-density zoning reform
Think of the roads as public transit. It was never "profitable" and requiring profitability is a bad way to run a transit system.
andys627··on Portland passes low-density zoning reform
People didn't want cars, they wanted what the gov't subsidized. Here in the US cars are subsidized and transit, biking, walking is penalized. These dials are turned differently in different countries.
