andrewljohnson··on Ask HN: What can I do to actively fight climate change?
I'm not discouraging an individual from eating meat... I'm encouraging an individual to not buy into the idea that not eating meat will achieve their stated goal.
andrewljohnson··on Ask HN: What can I do to actively fight climate change?
Getting people not to eat heavy-carbon-usage-meat at scale might be impactful... like found a lab meat company or something.

I just don't think being a vegetarian has impact... it's something you do to keep consistent with your worldview or morality, not to mitigate climate change.

andrewljohnson··on Ask HN: What can I do to actively fight climate change?
Ignore the crunchy comments saying don't eat meat, don't have kids, and don't drive. You have no impact as a consumer or influencer.

What you can do is:

* a) find someone working on climate change, and help write software for them part-time as a volunteer

* b) brainstorm an idea for a site/app, and build it yourself (and of course post it to HN)

* c) quit your job, join an organization focused on climate change, and do some work

* d) start researching more about climate change until you can make a better choice about a or b or c

If you can't commit a big chunk of time to it, then research good orgs focused on climate change, and donate money to them (or angel invest in them). That's the next best thing you can do.

andrewljohnson··on Intuit to Acquire Mailchimp for $12B
Something like Braze (or many competitors) will do all sorts of messaging.

It really depends on your business... variables like do you just want to do email, or do you want to message in app or on website too? Selling physical goods? There are a million ways to do app or marketing automation comms.

andrewljohnson··on Ask HN: Recruiters want people who do side projects, yet contracts forbid them?
1. As a hiring manager that can code, I'd always open your GitHub if you put it prominently in your application.

2. If there was a lot of work on your GitHub or a really interesting project, I'd riffle through it.

3. If you had a bunch of good public code, that was a good signal, and you'd likely get an interview.

If you didn't put a GitHub profile, no problem. If you put one that was blank, then you at least lost some time from my review of your application having me click through, so it probably hurt you at least a minor amount.

andrewljohnson··on Valve Steam Deck
I don't really see how a cheap, low-end, mobile computer is going to kill off desktop gaming. Why would that happen? People will all of a sudden stop wanting top end equipment and big high-res screens because they can play some Steam Gameboy?
andrewljohnson··on The impossible dream of the nuclear-powered 1958 Ford Nucleon
Ah yes, those wildly innovative do-gooder car companies of the 50s:

"The “smog conspiracy” was revealed in 1968 when the US Department of Justice filed an anti-trust case against the Big Three. They were accused of colluding to withhold the installation of catalytic converters and other technologies to reduce pollution. “Beginning at least as early as 1953, and continuing thereafter,” alleged the Department of Justice, “the defendants and co-conspirators have been engaged in a combination and conspiracy in unreasonable restraint of the aforesaid interstate trade and commerce in motor vehicle air pollution control equipment.”

andrewljohnson··on Maplibre: community-driven Mapbox GL fork
This needs really solid Metal support or it won't be adopted on mobile.
andrewljohnson··on Organicmaps: Android and iOS offline maps app for travelers, tourists, hikers
Maps.me was acquired by a company for that purpose.
andrewljohnson··on Organicmaps: Android and iOS offline maps app for travelers, tourists, hikers
MapBox hired the Valhalla team after Mapzen went out of business.
andrewljohnson··on Stack Overflow sold to Prosus for $1.8B
Top 3% for me, I guess on the strength of being early in the iOS ecosystem, inactive for a decade

My questions seem lame and my top answer is my own question: https://stackoverflow.com/users/108512/andrew-johnson?tab=pr...

andrewljohnson··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2021)

China?
andrewljohnson··on You can't have too many angels
This sounds like a story.
andrewljohnson··on Show HN: Inflation-adjusted Hacker News
Seems like a good way to prevent a lot of bad actors spamming. Google has a lot of problems with people automating free signups for computing and distribution resources... if you give someone any amount of free computing power, abusers will come.
andrewljohnson··on CEO behind Japan’s best-performing stock says his secret is raising salaries
He didn’t just raise salaries... he cut out management too. It makes sense to me the bottom feeder testing companies might not be running very profitably and this strategy could work... pay better people marginally more and have fewer managers.
andrewljohnson··on Replit Apps
My opinion is repl.it iterates fast, the CEO founder is very shipping and community oriented, and he's a good follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/amasad
andrewljohnson··on What Is a Nuclear Microreactor?
I think the parent comment is saying we are dependent on foreign oil and this will alleviate that.
andrewljohnson··on A Misleading CDC Number
Value #1 seems pretty at odds with 2 and 3, and dangerous with #5. I wonder how the CDC reconciles this... surely Be Right is more important than Be First. A spammy news site could claim most of these values in this order.
andrewljohnson··on Game developers sharing their salaries on Twitter
Total comp is what matters, and that's what people talk about. Bonus and RSUs are just cash.

L4 SE makes $266K: https://www.levels.fyi/company/Google/salaries/Software-Engi...

And L4 is one rung above entry level, 1-2 years at Google, right out of college.

andrewljohnson··on Higher mushroom consumption is associated with a lower risk of cancer
"Even though shiitake, oyster, maitake and king oyster mushrooms have higher amounts of the amino acid ergothioneine than white button, cremini and portabello mushrooms, the researchers found that people who incorporated any variety of mushrooms into their daily diets had a lower risk of cancer. "
andrewljohnson··on Apple is sued for telling you that you're “buying” movies
I think the point is it’s not a scam because these businesses are of value to you overall. That they decided they needed DRM to make sustainable business is unfortunate but doesn’t make it a scam. The words may be scammy in this case, but digital media is better than physical media and you get the good with the bad.
andrewljohnson··on SpaceX delivers 3rd batch of Starlink satellites in two weeks
Vertically integrating space logistics with space products is pretty cool.
andrewljohnson··on America's 1% Has Taken $50T From the Bottom 90%
The top 1% changes a lot. Most people don't stay in the top 1% for many years in a row. Many people below the 90th percentile benefit from the growth of the top levels when they have their brief time in the top 1%.
andrewljohnson··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
If there were a US highway that was used primarily or disproportionately for crime, then the government would take some actions.

Examples of this in practice are the checkpoint around El Paso in West Texas that checks for all sorts of contraband. And the agriculture checkpoint on Highway 80 between California and Nevada.

In this analogy, Parler seems more like a single road used for lots of crime, while social media overall is the highway network that is more free.

andrewljohnson··on Things You're Allowed to Do
Agreed, I'll treat any followup where I've actually responded in any way like the person sending it is a real human with feelings.
andrewljohnson··on Things You're Allowed to Do
I doubt the marginal gains from sending followups on cold emails can make or break any business, it's rude, and it's mildly illegal.

Maybe I'm just grumpy, but... if you send me a cold email, I'll either respond or delete it. Then, if the original didn't have an "unsubscribe" link, plus you follow up on it, I'll tell gmail to block you.

andrewljohnson··on Facebook: Free as in Bullshit
What effect do you think those letters will have?
andrewljohnson··on Ask HN: Was 20% time a good policy for Google's working culture?
In The Reponsible Company (by the Patagonia founder), he credits Googlers doing 20% time to do environmental work. The book is really pro-corporation though, heavily a PR piece IMO.
