andrewclunn··on Signal is for everyone, and everyone is different
I will continue to use Signal. I refuse to use WhatsApp, instagram, Facebook... What am I missing out on? Hell if I care. Eventually if you want to communicate with me you will use the channels I require, otherwise so long. Really has helped me to pair down on useless long distance relations that offer nothing to my life other than obligation.
andrewclunn··on Discord, or the Death of Lore
I love that Discord is ephemeral. The right to be forgotten doesn't exist on the searchable web no matter how much the EU wishes it were so.
andrewclunn··on Beyond CRISPR babies: How human genome editing is moving on after scandal
Much like Facebook being told no to its crypto plans, the issue here is less about morality, and more about state control. I'm sure military programs are using this technology to further state ends and "super soldiers" or some such approach will be sought. The public just can't be allowed access, and they'll hide that stifling behind moral platitudes.
andrewclunn··on Banning words won’t make the world more just
Look into the entomology of the word "retarded." They keep changing the word, but whatever they replace it with becomes a pejorative, because the thing it's describing is intuitively understood to be negative. Preying upon people's sense of justice to promote censorship in the name of justice is... oh what's the word...
andrewclunn··on Today's 5-year-olds will likely live to 100
Not if they are as fat as the 5 year olds I'm seeing.
andrewclunn··on Arizona’s top prosecutor concealed records debunking election fraud claims
Good thing the official running the election wasn't up for election themself. I mean that would make mass issues on election day look like intentional tampering to those "crazy conspiracy theorists."
andrewclunn··on De-Extinction? Surely You’re Joking
Rich people spend money on a fancy boat, nobody gives a damn. Rich people spend their money on some charity or philanthropic endeavor, "Shame! You should spend that money on THIS charity instead!"
andrewclunn··on Epstein Documents, Fully Searchable
We are embracing the term, because when everyone is a conspiracy theorist, it won't work to discredit people anymore by calling them that.
andrewclunn··on Ask HN: Why on Earth does Europe have 3 month notice periods to switch jobs?
Atlas Shrugged really needed an editor. It's a long, yet overly pedantic novel with simplistic caricature for villains. It also manages to go head to head with Brave New World for predicting the nature of our decline. This is just one more moment where I must begrudgingly admit that Rand called this one.
andrewclunn··on ChatGPT’s creators can’t figure out why it won’t talk about Trump – Semafor
"But it reflects a misunderstanding about the way ChatGPT’s technology works at a fundamental level, and all the evidence points to unintentional bias, including its underlying dataset — that is, the internet."

I call bs. The internet can't simultaneously be a troll laden cease pool of hatred AND a carefully curated bastion of progressive values depending on which is convenient for the narrative. Does anyone honestly believe "woke" bias isn't being coded into these things intentionally?

andrewclunn··on War and subsidies have turbocharged the green transition
Incentives shape human action, but can't force us to break the laws of physics. When a certain type of person rejects emergence in economics as cruel right-wing ideology, but embrace it for promoting scientific progress, the tribal blinders become laughably clear. "The Black Plague was good because it lead to the Renaissance!" See? Anyone can retroactively find a way to justify or defend the merits of an event. It's not clever and (speaking personally) I find it to be an antihuman elitist view that can only be taken by those who see themselves as outside of or above history.
andrewclunn··on When Americans lost faith in the news
I'd argue that Epstein, Covid, and internet censorship touching everyone and everything had a greater impact. Those things you listed impacted Republican's trust in news for sure, but at this point even Jimmy Dore has a good laugh at the likes of Sam Harris and Neil deGrasse Tyson. It's basically, "do you trust your corporate overlords?" which doesn't require that one have a particular view on economic policy.
andrewclunn··on We are ‘greening’ ourselves to extinction
Biggest point this article gets right: The political figures who brand themselves as environmentalists are there to syphon energy and support for these movements, while providing no real change.

Biggest thing this article gets wrong: Not realizing that the dismissive approach to indigenous peoples and the poor does not make a policy (by defenitiion) ineffective. Turns out that environmentalism and humanism can be (and often are) at odds.

I don't think problem 1 will be solved until problem 2 is addressed, because pretending like there is no contention or sacrifice by the already downtrodden in order to prevent climate change is the only way the grift maintains popular support.

andrewclunn··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
I believe the narrative that tells me everything is good and I shouldn't complain, and also that I should get really upset at things that the screen tells me to. I am an individual who expresses my individuality by conforming to all the trends and the world owes ME happiness! Your whole post seems negative and like you're denying all the progress we're making in allowing people to live their own truth within the confines of the neoliberal global order's approved options. Please report / ban for hate speech. Only positive vibes please!
andrewclunn··on High-Earning Men Are Cutting Back on Their Working Hours
Agreed. Except that it goes further in that many men are forgoing the family aspirations in general. Women are also far less... motivating these days. Who's going to work hard to provide for overweight ladies who rant about how horrible men are? Save your money, save your time, and if you really want a family, the key isn't more money, it's to find women from cultures that value men and fathers, which isn't the West.
andrewclunn··on Best and worst decisions I’ve made
This is mainly a list of best decisions with a few worsts thrown in at the end. That said, my own worst decisions list would likely mostly amount to several women's names. A few of those same names might also make the best list though too.
andrewclunn··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
Even if one believes in forced labor in order to provide goods and services to those in need, are you really drawing some sort of parallel where people should be compelled to perform sexual favors for others? I mean one could be a full on communist and not think that state provided prostitution (where people would be assigned those jobs by the state) is ethical. Didn't think I'd see apologism for something akin to North Korea's "pleasure Squad" on Hacker News, but alright then.
andrewclunn··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
You are not owed sex or intimacy. To men: want to be desired by other people? make yourself more desirable. As for women in this situation, that is largely self imposed because their sex drives are lower and they are often in denial about how their attractiveness declines with age, and are unable to adjust their expectations to match.

In the modern dating / hookup culture young men and older women are the clear losers. Men are figuring this out and largely either going full anti-women "red pill rage" into "$!tches aint shit" using women when they're older or opting out all together. Women party it up when young, and are then shocked only when the "good times" start to end as younger ladies supplant them.

The age old solution throughout the ages, has been to control female sexuality with shame (often enforced by other women). This is now considered unthinkable, despite the surge in single parent homes, massive decline in birth rates, increased loneliness and decreased happiness by all. So instead sex bots, prostitution, more welfare, and artificial wombs are promoted as the only politically tenable out. I think the future shall be inherited by the Amish, Mormons, and other such groups that have managed to find ways to maintain family units in opposition to modern culture. They're certainly the only ones breeding at above replacement levels.

TLDR: in practice based religion beats out free love in providing more sex, without all the messy fatherlessness and STD problems to boot.

andrewclunn··on Fewer people are creating new podcasts these days
YouTube made two important changes to their algorithm over the past decade:

- Newer content listed over "best fit" content. - Time of viewing prioritizing longer videos over shorter ones.

Both these were done for advertising purposes. Both result in more drawn out, less dense content (both from an information and entertainment perspective). This is the result of the ad driven model. People would rather waste time than buy things. Want quality content in audio format that doesn't waste your time? Buy an audiobook. You get what you pay for.

andrewclunn··on ReactOS
When the newest "latest news" story is for Google Summer of Code 2022... why is this being submitted?
andrewclunn··on The Scandal of Financial Nihilism
I think it's confusing cause and effect. Monetary policy that leads to cheap debt for the connected and inflation for the masses is driving this.
andrewclunn··on How Police Exploited the Capitol Riot’s Digital Records
Lesson learned. Want to commit a crime? Don't bring your phone.
andrewclunn··on An engineer has built and programmed an all-robot band
That's not gonna happen until they do an AC/DC cover.
andrewclunn··on Genders.wtf
Not sure if my favorite is the FeMan versus Male Man, or the Canadian Applicant one. I was worried this would be a flame war topic with political raging, but this is just universally hilarious. Well done to the creator(s).
andrewclunn··on Steam hits 10M concurrent in-game players in record-breaking weekend
That's like blaming Edgar Alan Poe for trashy modern emo slam poetry. Those were innocent times when the innate evil of the loot box was not yet known. Valve abandoned them when the truth of what they were tampering with became clear. I am willing to forgive so long as they do not return to the dark arts.
andrewclunn··on Please write a breaking news article about a leaf falling from a tree
Making up fake quotes to overplay mundane events? Clearly it's already a journalist.
andrewclunn··on What happens when babies are left to cry it out?
The SIDS risk being parents rolling on top of and crushing / asphyxiating the baby. We just gloss over most of this sort of death by calling it SIDS to avoid having to charge the parents with a crime.
andrewclunn··on The Grinch Stealing the Future of Gen Y and Z
This reads like a partisan screed more than an informative piece of journalism.
andrewclunn··on RISC-V Pushes into the Mainstream
Apple brought their chipset in house, using ARM is a base, to control their supply chain, cut costs, and allow for a RISC based architecture (which honestly just makes sense now these days). The biggest hinderance to RISC-V adoption will be if ARM remains customizable, cheap (from an IP perspective), and has widespread adoption. Honestly, I'm okay if RISC-V remains somewhat niche, but provides the necessary market pressure to keep non-open competitors honest. There's a meta-benefit to open standards as well.
andrewclunn··on Acceptance of evolution by high school students: Is religion the key factor?
I've known plenty of people who "accept" evolution but don't understand the concepts of emergence or how they apply to evolutionary biology. When any idea, no matter how right and true, decides that it needs to engage in ideological branding to promote itself, it invariably becomes a religion. Treating "belief in evolution" as a litmus test for being educated or knowing the truth just replaces internalizing and comprehending concepts with some tribal shibboleth. Everyone is obsessed with the what and the why, but the meat is almost always found in the how.
