What is true of the most informative, insightful, and interesting posts on hacker news, but is also true of the laziest most worthless posts? They're both flagged, to keep you from seeing them.
If Russia was censoring Spotify then that would be horrible. If Spotify is pulling out of Russia, while blaming Russia for doing so, and claiming it's Russia's censorship, that caused the issue... This stinks of hypocrisy.
Alcohol based mouthwash becomes a requirement in the glove box. Whiskey manufacturers start doing sponsorships where the autopilot is named after them. "Had a long day? Jim Beam will get you home."
3 areas I want OSS to have REAL government backing:
- Libre / Open Office because open document standards aid collaboration and reverse compatibility.
- Video / audio conferencing because security and the network effect there are so important.
- Operating system because if you make the leap to an OS OS then all the incentives align to promote usage of open source software for everything by default.
People who think there are no new great minds are looking for society to hand them socially approved "great minds." The thing about great minds is that your mind has to be at least not entirely eclipsed by them to recognize their greatness.
Down votes don't mean your comment was made in bad faith or unhelpful. It means somebody who has amassed more than 500 karma disagrees with you. Let's not kid ourselves about what karma, Reddit gold, or any such approach actually is used for.
If the Ukrainians are allowed to protest, then Russia is fighting this while trying to minimize overt civilian casualties (most likely to avoid video of such acts becoming galvanizing propaganda tools against them). If things go poorly, then what? If Russia then starts fighting to destroy rather than conquer Ukraine intact, then it's a whole different story. This piece reads of wishful thinking.
War time: This foreign government bought ADS! They're promoting propaganda and influencing our policy, election, populace! My own government (which only tells the truth) must stop this from happening.
"and they don't try to pick fights at school board meetings."
And that's where I stopped reading. Because, you know, voicing disagreement at a public forum with people tasked with educating your kids is the same as going on a Twitter rant.
Well when the original comment is flagged (and not merely downvoted) on a topic that is just a call to activism (which, honestly, why is this here?), it's almost proof positive that in fact there are "sheeple" attempting to prevent anything that questions their narrative from entering the discourse. I image the wisdom of "I don't automatically trust my TV" will AGAIN only be judged as wise AFTER the fact. For now, it's unwelcome trolling of the typical hacker news user, who is barely distinguishable from the average reddit user.
Telling young men to ignore women and focus on physical fitness and their careers is great advice. Then women that ignore you at 24 will be all over you at 34. But by then you'll realize how the game works and not be such a sucker. Casting MGTOW or red pilled ideas as "pro-incel" is the lie used to make you reject the truth outright.
Oh, this looks cool... oh it's from the same people who made Shovel Knight... almost to the fishing mini-game stretch goal... fine, shut up and take my money.
I like the idea of a promise that all code will be open sourced at a 2 to 3 year delay. I have seen this model in use, and it disincentivizes competitor forks (especially if that open source is GPL) while still allowing paid versions.
Does every one of these have to have the "I hate Trump, yet understand the motivations of his followers," claim? I get the article is for "well meaning progressives" who want all these policies, just maybe 20% less, but the author and their intended audience have no clue what motivates people who fundamentally disagree with them. My advice to the author is to endure. Academia is the corrupt bed you nade, now sleep in it
Gaining fortune through fame is a sucker's game. Those with real fortunes attempt to avoid fame because it costs way more than it brings in. Once you hit that point of requiring private security, suddenly you're locked in and you need to keep the money coming in (via your fame) to protect yourself from the risk (associated with your fame). Plus it breeds the worst sort of social habits and incentives if you gain fame early in your life. It's so easy for young girls (who are even mildly attractive) with poor parents to get roped into this thing. It's the same perverse incentives that cause prostitutes to get their own daughters into the "family business" (which happens more often than you think). What you get validation from in your teenage years has a huge impact on what you strive for / put your effort into. Do the right thing for your kids long term and invest in them instead of cashing in on them.
OKC allowed users to filter for (covid) vaccinated people, but not for unvaccinated people. By making the default supposedly neutral sites lean left politically, it naturally creates a market for those unserved by those offerings.
So because people traded (sometimes) using services that had associated fees... Wall Street won? There's nothing in this article that supports the click bait title.
I expected a "you don't need school to learn to code," and instead found a "there will still be jobs for people who can't code... my 50k on a liberal arts degree wasn't a mistake... oh please let this be true."
> The immune response after vaccination more or less mimics what happens after infection, with one major difference. In a SARS-CoV-2 infection, the immune system sees the whole virus. The most effective vaccines, however, are using just one viral protein to elicit a response: spike. And whether antibody levels will also plateau after vaccination isn’t yet clear. Wherry and his colleagues analysed immune responses in 61 people for 6 months after their first shot, finding that antibody levels peaked about a week after the second shot and then fell quickly for a couple of months. After that, they declined more slowly.
Clearly this article's author is a conspiracy theorist and should be censored for spreading misinformation.
CGI is to movies as autotune is to music or makeup is to beauty. When you have a solid base, and merely use these things to clean up a few rough edges, it works wonderfully. When you destroy any sense of realism or humanity under an entirely synthetic facade... yeah, nobody's buying it, it destroys the emersion, and it all looks / sounds the same after awhile.
