amiga-workbench··on Comcast squeezing 2Gbps internet speeds through decades-old coaxial cables
Its because DOCSIS has a limited number of frequency channels which can be assigned as either upstream/downstream and if they're comically over-subscribing their infrastructure you can offset that a bit by allocating most channels to downstream. I guess their thinking is that most users are going to be doing download heavy tasks and not upload, so it doesn't matter.
amiga-workbench··on Nginx Unit – Universal web app server
You can replace nodemon/PM2 with a systemd unit file.
amiga-workbench··on UK pulls back from clash with Big Tech over private messaging
It's not completely untrue, there was a whole hoo-hah over getting Boris Johnsons WhatsApp messages. They use it to get around the requirement that official communications be logged and available for later scrutiny, much like a bank has to retain communications in case of an audit.
amiga-workbench··on The ideal viewport doesn't exist
Its a Mac user thing, they have a collage of overlapping randomly shaped windows splayed everywhere. Windows users tend to just maximise their programs or snap them when needing to multitask.

Gnome pushes users to fullscreen programs too, with a quick mouse twitch to get the overview open to switch programs.

amiga-workbench··on StarLite 12.5-inch Linux tablet
3-4 hours right now, but there is about 20% battery wear and I've not setup TLP yet.
amiga-workbench··on StarLite 12.5-inch Linux tablet
I just bought a ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen 3. Everything works great, the on screen keyboard is actually functioning properly and appears on demand every time. Screen orientation is handled properly and promptly. The only let-down so far is battery life, but I need to make some adjustments to help there.

I'm running the latest version of Fedora workstation, under wayland too.

This thing is the only truly repairable tablet I've encountered so far, 8 screws and the display pops off, no glue, no can opener required like a Surface Pro. 9 screws to get the heatsink off (they're all captive) and you're at the full size NVME SSD.

amiga-workbench··on Orb is a free and open source web desktop
That's larger than all of the JS business logic in most of my applications and comparable to some of my stylesheets. For mobile users it all adds up, and not everybody has fantastic reception all the time.

You're not wrong about logos, but I find that webp will often squish that sort of thing down to 10-15k.

jQuery is completely unnecessary now, you can use the built in element selectors to do all the same stuff without pulling a huge lib in. The value in jQuery was acting as a shim to smooth over IE's deficiencies back in the day. Now, its a waste of bandwidth.
amiga-workbench··on WordPress Core to start using SQLite
I really wish Wordpress would ditch the shared-hosting first deployment model and grow up a bit.

Thankfully https://roots.io/bedrock/ exists to bridge the gap if you're absolutely forced to use WP.

amiga-workbench··on robots.txt is not the answer for LLMs
Are we gonna have to start putting highly expensive proof of work checks on pages just to make this kind of scraping non-viable?
amiga-workbench··on The Perfect Laptop
For me, 12" is the smallest size you can fit a non-compromised, normal keyboard layout in.

I also carry around a smaller messenger bag which 12" laptops just about fit in. I tried to pull off a 17" Dell mobile workstation, but got very tired of lugging around a backpack and having no battery life.

amiga-workbench··on My broken ThinkPad plays music upon booting
My X270 motherboard conked out a few months ago and I had the same app issue as OP. Sideloading the APK did let the app install, but it's non functional.
amiga-workbench··on A Japanese factory that designs clothes on a 40-year-old computer [video]
Can you think of any modern platform that would have the longevity, stability and lack of maintenance burden of that Sharp computer over another 40 years?

The only thing I can think of that would make their current setup more robust would be having the program burned into ROM and not on tape.

amiga-workbench··on Scaling Memcache at Facebook (2021)
This can be fairly gracefully handled by using a caching library with tag support. On a webpage that collates content from disparate parts of a CMS, you just tag the page content cache with the ID's of all the entities that make it up. Then you define a save/delete handler that purges caches tagged with the ID of whatever you just altered.
amiga-workbench··on Solid state active cooling on a Mini PC
Because its using piezoelectric elements to move the air. There are no motors or bearings in here.
amiga-workbench··on The Great CPU Stagnation
Yeah, but mostly Neos which loves all that L3 cache.
amiga-workbench··on The Great CPU Stagnation
I only just upgraded from my i5 3570K to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D.

Not because anything I was currently doing with my computer was becoming too slow, but because I wanted to do new things (VR). A shame, I wanted to run that thing into the ground.

I've got my old system sat spare, I'm not sure what to do with it.

amiga-workbench··on Htmx Is the Future
>For instance, a major selling point of Node was running JS on both the client and server so you can write the code once

I mean, I'm using Laravel Livewire quite heavily for forms, modals and search. So effectively I've eliminated the need for writing much front-end code. Everything that matters is handled on the server. This means the little Javascript I'm writing is relegated to frilly carousels and other trivial guff.

amiga-workbench··on Why is inflation so sticky? It could be corporate profits
I jumped ship from them before Christmas. I'm with YouFiber now, I get symmetric gigabit for £35/m and £5/m for a static IPv4 address that opts me out of CGNAT. The first 3 months were free.
amiga-workbench··on Google Authenticator now supports Google Account synchronization
Thumbs up for Aegis, I've been using it for years and the backup & import/export has saved my ass several times now.
amiga-workbench··on Marginalia: DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content
I believe the application code is single threaded due to its interpreter too.
amiga-workbench··on Valve Restricts Accounts of 2500 Users Who Marked a Negative Game Review Useful
One choice would be to price out cheaters. Have people pay a one-off fee for access to a premium tier of multiplayer servers. If you cheat, your access is pulled and you've got to go and spend more money to get back in.

Something Awful did this with their forum and it does a pretty good job at keeping spammers and other irritants out.

amiga-workbench··on Software Forge Performance Index
I think every time I go to use Bitbucket I get an error 500 at least once.
amiga-workbench··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
My TV is either off to save energy, or because Android has gone completely insane again and it needs rebooting.

If you do a full hard reset of my particular TV, it can't even run its own OOTB setup smoothly. Sony have got it playing some ambient chimes in the background, but the audio constantly breaks up and glitches.

Its got an 8 core processor and it can't even handle audio playback in a bit of the UI which should have had heavy QA.

amiga-workbench··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
Its because they're garbage. When a CRT from the mid 80's powers on, warms its tube up faster and switches inputs quicker than a modern TV, something is very wrong.

I'm pretty sure the NAND is degrading in my 2015 Sony Bravia, its bordering on unusable with its hangs, jitters and crashes.

I barely trust any manufacturer to produce consumer grade goods that actually do their job properly, the best way to get more stuff working right is to narrow the featureset and hope that they're not completely incompetent.

amiga-workbench··on The day Windows died
Same here, but I only boot into Windows for VR. I'm waiting for Valve to stop hyperfocusing on the Steam Deck and get SteamVR to behave well under Linux.

Once that happens I can bin Windows off for good.

amiga-workbench··on The day Windows died
Yup, even on a slow machine with a mechanical drive you could blind type the first 3 letters of a program name and slam the enter key. The search filtering was so quick it would have completed the operation in time for your enter key-press to be registered.

Try the same thing on 10 or 11 and you're probably going to end up with a new edge window running a Bing search.

amiga-workbench··on PC keyboard hides an interesting secret
Its a Pentium 4, its going to spend half of its clock cycles with a stalled pipeline.
amiga-workbench··on Framework announces AMD, new Intel gen, 16“ laptop and more
AMD have been thrashing Intel in performance, thermals and battery life for several years now. Intel are also a rather unpleasant company, I'll happily go with a competitor whenever it makes sense.
amiga-workbench··on Linux Intel WiFi driver broken with 5&6GHz bands for longer than three years
MT7921 M.2 card, I've not noticed any interference, but I've also not been actively checking for that.
