alphabet9000··on The app that lets you pay to control another person's life
Uhhhh i was gonna say what i really think about this app but... if u want me to say something nice first send $1 (venmo @johnromero44) but if u want me to really go off on it cough up $5 i will be waiting for 5 minutes thanks
alphabet9000··on A URL Lengthener
the http url is a 301 redirect to https so thats why it doesn't load ultimately
alphabet9000··on Google Docs will now use canvas based rendering
I wonder if they will expand their use of canvas to other products of theirs, such as google images.
alphabet9000··on Writing books is not really a good idea
move 100% of books to ebooks and make them as obnoxious as possible. start adding things like loot boxes. pay a dollar to read a TOP SECRET crucial bit to the storyline that you simply wont get the Full Book Experience (tm). give it Social (tm) capabilities. show indicators where everyone else is reading and allow comments on any sentence in the book. feature self facing cameras on the ebook so you can live stream yourself reading. Allow users to Like your live streams and display metrics on every page.
alphabet9000··on The Psychology of Design
the scrolling is messed up. the 'sticky header' at the top disables scrolling while it pops in and out of sight. more reason never to use animated sticky headers - just put position fixed on it and be done with it.
alphabet9000··on Launch HN: Porter (YC S20) – Open-source Heroku in your own cloud
i think your website looks good. the subtle animated gradient on the rectangle at the bottom of the page is a nice touch. i like how straightforward the page is. nice work
alphabet9000··on Glass Walls
lately i have been having a pavlovian reaction to seeing barely readable text on websites - i associate it in my mind with downvoted HN comments

alphabet9000··on MMPX Style-Preserving Pixel Art Magnification [pdf]
i wonder about this too. in my mind, i feel like some sort of nn magic will eventually be able to miraculously transform A into B - e.g. http://telnet.asia/yoshi_n.png
alphabet9000··on The Art of Mathematics in Chalk
if you like the look 'stuff happening on a chalkboard', you might like cy twombly's paintings from around 1968-70, e.g. http://telnet.asia/synopsis_of_a_battle.jpg
alphabet9000··on Firefox 89.0 Beta brings a new look
there are examples of firefox protecting 'less sophisticated' users from abuse while still allowing them to go through with it if they really want to. such as, opening up the inspect element area and receiving a warning + having to type 'allow paste' to be able to paste javascript into the console. there's ulterior motives for requiring mozilla to sign extensions, and it isn't about protecting users.
alphabet9000··on Firefox 89.0 Beta brings a new look
I wonder if normal Firefox will ever let users permanently load their own extensions without having to have Mozilla 'sign' them first. I also wonder if they will ever let users permanently disable Firefox from checking for updates.

alphabet9000··on Zoom zero-day discovery
likely not the same situation, but its interesting zoom has a client uri scheme zoommtg:// and just a year or so ago a CVE [0] popped up that involved using the irc:// scheme to demonstrate a calculator opening using mIRC.

alphabet9000··on Ask HN: What novel tools are you using to write web sites/apps?
i wrote an html generator called jibber [0] that works over IRC. the input syntax is similar to markdown; it was written in mircscript and i've been using it for about 5 years for my own websites.

alphabet9000··on Bitcoin is not a Battery – it is a Sink

alphabet9000··on Launch HN: Queenly (YC W21) – Marketplace and search engine for formalwear
hi kathy, congratulations on the site launch. there's one thing that stood out when I opened the site that you might want to take a look at. the 'onmouseout' behavior on the menu at the top seems like it needs to be reworked a little bit, because there is a tendency for the submenu to get 'stuck'. (its especially noticable if the mouse is in that position when the page loads). here's what i mean specifically: https://i.imgur.com/mbMnm4R.gif

second, i don't know if this is just my browser, but the images associated with step 1/2/3 (step 2 is missing) are vertically stretched kind of wrong, e.g. https://i.imgur.com/Hr63i0q.png

other than that, i strongly commend you for not using some kind of auto-hiding animation on the sticky header. and also not using animations in general. good call.

alphabet9000··on A directory of handmade webpages
it's an interesting thought experiment to try and make sense of what it is about a website that makes it seem ugly, or not ugly. at what point does an 'ugly' web site become beautiful? is there a threshold?

i'd like to see an example of a site that you feel is not ugly, not so i can be a contrarian and say 'well, i think those are ugly!' but, just to get a feel for what you believe is exemplary of beauty.

alphabet9000··on Email from Jeff Bezos to employees
I wanted to read this, I really did, but the Time Indicator stated that it was a 2 min read. I'm sorry, that is too long. I ended up not reading; I simply do not have the time. Perhaps Jeff Bezos can get to the point a little bit quicker, the next time he steps down from a key management position in the future. A 1 min read would be acceptable. Thanks to Amazon for including a reading time indicator, I might have wasted my time otherwise.
alphabet9000··on Making our new homepage fast and performant
"This post is the third installment of our five-part series on building GitHub’s new homepage"

Imagine the ridiculous amount of money that has to have been spent on the spinning globe thing. Enough not to have a random blog post talking about, it but a five-part SERIES!!!

The frontpage eats up almost 90% CPU on firefox on my computer[0] and not as much, but still high in chrome. Maybe that has something to do with graphics acceleration, or my computer isn't good enough, or some other thing where it's my fault.. But it's ironic the situation exists for a site with a five-part series describing how "performant" it is.

Scrolling down the site loads up 4.5 MB of bandwidth transferred, 6.5 MB resources loaded, and 110 requests. Could be worse, but the fact this almost seems 'normal' now is a sad state of affairs.

As an aside, I understand this is GitHub's primary marketing vehicle to really Impress and Wow newcomers to the site -- hoping to blow them away with neon graphics and slick animation. But honestly, is this kind of dribbble.com-esque readymade really impressing anyone these days?! Have years of A/B testing determined that a neon space adventure yields the highest level of new user signups??[1]

alphabet9000··on Pirate Bay founder thinks Parler’s inability to stay online is 'embarrassing'
"We don't condone gun violence. We believe that the world needs less guns, not more of them. We believe however that these prints will stay on the internets regardless of blocks and censorship, since that's how the internets works. If there's a lunatic out there who wants to print guns to kill people, he or she will do it. With or without TPB. Better to have these prints out in the open internets (TPB) and up for peer review (the comment threads), than semi hidden in the darker parts of the internet."
