alksjdalkj··on Ask HN: Does the rest of the world realize just how much money SWEs can make?
> It's kind of unfathomable why someone might choose a career in investment banking, or management consulting, or any other engineering profession, which might require very long hours, extensive certifications, hostile work environments, etc. over a career as a software engineer or product manager. That is, unless they don't realize they can make at least as much or more in tech.

...or, they just don't want to be a software engineer or product manager?

alksjdalkj··on Examining the covidtests.gov architecture
Graceville isn't really the midpoint of anywhere so I'd still be curious how it ended up being picked as the location.
alksjdalkj··on How to build homes with virtually no heating (2020)
> It is interesting that you insulate under the house.

I think anyone who's gone camping will appreciate the need for insulation between the ground and whatever you're trying to keep warm - a good sleeping pad is crucial for keeping warm.

alksjdalkj··on FedEx: equip aircraft with countermeasure against heat-seeking missiles [pdf]
They're going to use an A321 for long distance line haul?
alksjdalkj··on SEC probes Tesla over whistleblower claims on solar panel defects
I have no idea how SEO works, but over half my first-page google results are about this actual whistle.
alksjdalkj··on U.S. satellites are being attacked every day according to Space Force general
It's distressing how casually people can suggest harming a billion people - for actions that the vast majority had nothing to do with.
alksjdalkj··on I resigned from Twitter
>> you're not going to be able to give the focus a solo CEO is.

> I agree. As much as he tried to justify the dual CEO roles, it never made any sense.

If I remember correctly he was originally going to step away from Twitter to focus on Square, but then Twitter couldn't find a replacement and basically begged him to stay.

alksjdalkj··on Lttng: An open-source, eBPF alternative
I think the title of this post should be the actual title from the linked page, "LTTng: an open source tracing framework for Linux". The current title ("LTTng: An open-source alternative to eBPF") seems to imply that eBPF is not open source, which is not correct.
alksjdalkj··on Tuvalu looking at legal ways to be a state if it is submerged
Ken Liu has a relevant short story [1] - set in a future Earth where climate change and rising sea levels have forced people to live on floating settlements. It's also included in his collection The Hidden Girl and Other Stories.

alksjdalkj··on Tuvalu looking at legal ways to be a state if it is submerged
I think the point is even with land there's no way they could actually defend their territory so what difference will it make when their land goes away? They'll be in the same situation they're in now (at least with respect to their sovereignty and existence as a state).
alksjdalkj··on The U.S. Treasury is buying private app data to target and investigate people
If a private company can buy the data why shouldn't the government be able to?

The real solution is to not allow the data to be sold to anyone.

alksjdalkj··on Metallurgist admits faking steel test results for US Navy subs
It seems like she just skipped the test because it made her job easier. I feel like most of us have probably taken shortcuts before and justified it after the fact with "well it wasn't really necessary anyway"
alksjdalkj··on Classified tank specs leaked on War Thunder game forums again
My understanding is that it's used as an "interrogation" technique and that they don't really care what the machine tells them.
alksjdalkj··on 2450MHz radiation induces stress and anxiety like behavior in rats (2019)
This is a peer reviewed article right? So presumably at least a couple other people in the field were satisfied with their methods. Are you suggesting they were wrong to accept this article?
alksjdalkj··on Understanding how Facebook disappeared from the internet
Question about the WARP map - I assume the grey countries are places where Cloudflare doesn't have any presence, but what about Egypt/Oman? Why are they green? And why is Australia orange and not red?
alksjdalkj··on What Happened to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp?
If they're restoring from backup that makes sense right? I assume backups are read-only, so deleting messages won't delete them from the backup also. It is sloppy though that you would see anything before the restore was totally done though (including re-deleting messages)
alksjdalkj··on How WhatsApp enables multi-device capability
> When the Brown Shirts come to get you, it'll be your own message history they hang you with. (Only slightly :))

There are certainly some countries where this isn't a hyperbole. But in all others, suggesting that Nazis might come take you away because of messages you've written in the past is in pretty bad taste, IMO.

alksjdalkj··on The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used
Yeah isn't chassis intrusion detection fairly common? I feel like it's been an option to enable in most BIOSs I've seen.
alksjdalkj··on Linux on the Framework Laptop
How's the battery life?
alksjdalkj··on Ask HN: Whats your ideal PhD workflow
In my experience Overleaf is worlds better than using git to collaborate on a paper. Access control is easier, you can see where other people are working in the document, there's no need to mess with merging or handling conflicts. I'm pretty sure you can sync it to a git repo too if you really want a copy in git.
alksjdalkj··on Ask HN: Whats your ideal PhD workflow
You'll get tons of solicited and unsolicited advice - a lot of it will be contradictory, a lot will actually be the advice-giver's personal preferences disguised as advice, a lot will be aspirational or abstract and not super helpful. Trust yourself to identify the useful bits but don't be afraid to disregard most of what you hear.
alksjdalkj··on Memfd_secret() in 5.14
The article says that hibernation is completely disabled when a secret memory area is active and the memory area is locked into RAM. They designed it so the secret would never be written to persistent storage.
alksjdalkj··on Former college professor accused of serial arson is denied bail in California
There's a whole list of LEAs here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_law_enforcement_in_the.... I guess laws that are specific to just one department of the executive branch have to be enforced by the corresponding LEA from that department?
alksjdalkj··on Firefox 91
I think you can kind of do this now? The Temporary Containers plugin will create throwaway containers but you can also create permanent site-specific containers.
alksjdalkj··on U.S. Senate Vote in Favor of Amendment That Threatens Crypto Industry
If you need to hire high powered lawyers to be able to use crypto, isn't that demonstrating that crypto has failed to be a universal, government-independent currency? Or am I misunderstanding something and that was never the point?
alksjdalkj··on U.S. Senate Vote in Favor of Amendment That Threatens Crypto Industry
I don't really follow any cryptocurrency news but wasn't one of the main appeals early on that it would be independent from any governments? Specifically that it could be a currency not subject to the oversight and sanctions of the US treasury? I guess "cryptocurrency" is different from "cryptocurrency industry", but it still seems like the ecosystem as a whole should be more resilient to actions from the US government. Otherwise what's the point?
alksjdalkj··on Apple's plan to “think different” about encryption opens a backdoor to your life
Have you found any decent google maps alternatives? I'd love to find something but nothing comes close as far as I've found. Directions that take into account traffic is the big thing that I feel like nobody (other than Apple, MS, etc.) will be able to replicate.

Have you tried using the website? I've had some luck with that on postmarketOS, and it means you don't need to install Play services to use it.

alksjdalkj··on $28.50 Beer at LaGuardia Sparks Audit of New York Airport Concession Prices
Not sure why this is downvoted since it's 100% correct. I always bring food through security, sometimes it gets flagged going through the xray machine but all that happens is TSA has to manually look through your bag. Normally as soon as they see it's food they just let you go, I think it's pretty common.
alksjdalkj··on Activision Blizzard employees walk out over harassment and ‘frat boy’ culture
It's on the front page of the Washington Post and NPR.
alksjdalkj··on Signal on Android: Images sent to wrong contacts
This is a good reminder that no matter how security and privacy-focused a project is, we still don't know how to reliably develop software without bugs - and all it takes is one bug to negate all of those security and privacy features.
