alksjdalkj··on CRIU, a project to implement checkpoint/restore functionality for Linux
This sounds similar to what's been done to speedup FaaS cold starts - snapshot the VM after the startup code runs, then launch functions from the snapshot. E.g., https://www.sysnet.ucsd.edu/~voelker/pubs/faasnap-eurosys22.....
alksjdalkj··on CRIU, a project to implement checkpoint/restore functionality for Linux
Sounds like a cool class project! If I understand your approach correctly, this is how live virtual machine migration typically works (e.g., https://none.cs.umass.edu/~shenoy/courses/spring18/readings/...). It also sounds similar to this "remote-fork" concept: https://www.usenix.org/system/files/osdi23-wei-rdma.pdf.
alksjdalkj··on Baltimore's Key Bridge struck by cargo ship, collapses
The bridge is part of I-695, which is a beltway: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_695_(Maryland). Inner loop refers to the inner lanes (traveling clockwise), outer loop the outer lanes (traveling counterclockwise).
alksjdalkj··on Doors of McMurdo
They aren't independent, the city will tend to build up along the transit lines due to the easy access to transit. E.g., the NYC outer boroughs and the DC metro area.
alksjdalkj··on Show HN: Campus FM – live stream college and independent radio stations
This is awesome! I love all the logos. A few more if you want to add -

alksjdalkj··on IBM acquires Red Hat Storage team
The title of the Ceph mailing list post is "Red Hat’s Ceph team is moving to IBM", which makes it more clear what's happening.
alksjdalkj··on Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal on whistleblower story
> Lots of people are rushing to defend Mudge, and maybe it's warranted, but being an alumnus of cDc and l0pht doesn't make one a competent executive.

He was also a DARPA PM, which definitely requires management/executive skills.

alksjdalkj··on Nvidia releases open-source GPU kernel modules
I'm pretty sure I needed to mess with xorg.conf and other settings to get things like screen resolution and Compiz working correctly. I don't know what part of the stack was responsible for those issues, but I thought it was related to the graphics driver.

I could be misremembering though, this was 15+ years ago now.

alksjdalkj··on Nvidia releases open-source GPU kernel modules
If I remember correctly, the open source ATI drivers were always a bit buggy and it wasn't that easy getting them installed either. The tradeoff was always Nvidia: proprietary but works well, ATI: open but buggy.
alksjdalkj··on Removing characters from strings faster with AVX-512
I think this is less of a problem on newer CPUs: https://travisdowns.github.io/blog/2020/08/19/icl-avx512-fre...
alksjdalkj··on Running Containers on AWS Lambda
Pretty sure Zappa does this: https://github.com/zappa/Zappa
alksjdalkj··on Van life (cancer edition) finale
I also read it assuming it was the man but yeah it's the woman: https://imgur.com/gallery/305Y0Y0.
alksjdalkj··on Seen from space, the longest conveyor belt is in Morocco
Full of ore and people! Like you said for a long time there weren't any roads into the interior of Mauritania so that iron train was the main link. I always found it super fascinating - https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/in-sight/wp/2016/02/12/h..., https://wildmanlife.com/riding-worlds-longest-iron-ore-train...
alksjdalkj··on Cat Printer
For those who bought one, is this the correct product page? I couldn't find any links on the github - https://www.aliexpress.com/i/1005002722811359.html
alksjdalkj··on eBPF Nuances on Minikube
I think I agree but that is the commonly accepted term for them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS-level_virtualization.
alksjdalkj··on On Killing Tanks (2020)
I feel like most commenters here didn't read the article - in many cases a single soldier /can't/ take out a modern tank because of their active protection systems.
alksjdalkj··on Intel acquires Linutronix
Looks like K'Nex, not Lego. Still very cool!

alksjdalkj··on Newcomer's Welcome Package: Thule Air Base, Greenland [pdf]
I was talking about walking - for biking, I was taught to ride with traffic.
alksjdalkj··on Newcomer's Welcome Package: Thule Air Base, Greenland [pdf]
I grew up in the states and was always taught to walk against traffic. Not sure where they're teaching people the opposite.
alksjdalkj··on How the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is being built [video]
In the NYC area off the top of my head there's been the Tappan Zee bridge, the East Side Access project bringing the Long Island Rail Road into Grand Central Terminal, and 2nd Ave Subway Phase 2. Penn Station Access is being discussed, as is the Triboro RX line.

ETA: If you're curious NYC has a dashboard of capital projects >$25 million here: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/capitalprojects/dashboard/dashboar.... I think the complaint that we don't build anything in this country anymore is sometimes overstated.

alksjdalkj··on Lasershark: Fast, bidirectional communication into air-gapped systems
I think it's common to have multiple systems on different airgapped networks in the same room. So if one of the networks were compromised this could let you pivot to another network. Or if they're both compromised it would give a way to exfil from one to the other.
alksjdalkj··on Lasershark: Fast, bidirectional communication into air-gapped systems
> Part of Defensive Depth includes vetting and requiring the janitor who cleans the SCIF to themselves also hold a security clearance.

Sure, but no amount of vetting is going to be perfect. Maybe the vetting missed something, maybe some circumstance changed between now and the most recent re-up, maybe instead of $10k it's $10M, etc.

A better solution is to physically disable the USB ports.

alksjdalkj··on Collapse of the Fern Hollow Bridge
Looks like the bus named in the NTSB report is 39000-45500 lb, so under the bridge's weight limit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Flyer_Xcelsior
alksjdalkj··on Disney Filmmaking Process
They have open sourced some assets: https://disneyanimation.com/data-sets/. Obviously not a full movie, but enough that a researcher/developer could begin to experience the kind of technical challenges that arise at "Disney-scale". IIRC a single frame from the movie Moana used something like 100GB of assets.
alksjdalkj··on Tell HN: You can see your vouched and flagged items
So are you refuting the assertion that HN does a poor job with accessibility? Or just saying that you don't care because it works well for you?
alksjdalkj··on I Quit Shopify After Five Months
> Work-life balance at Shopify is unparalleled. Work is synchronous-ish but it's super easy to run out for some afternoon errands or a quick workout. Shopify is pretty visionary here - turns out happy and healthy employees do better work than ones that are chained to a desk all day

Is this really that unusual? I feel like most places I've worked, as long as I made it to meetings nobody cared if I stepped out for an hour to run errands or something.

alksjdalkj··on Where in the world are Trader Joe’s warehouses? (2015)
"Trader Joe's" could also be being used as an adjective in this headline right?
alksjdalkj··on The Karikó problem: Lessons for funding basic research
The US News ranking is known to be totally garbage, I really wish people would stop citing it. csrankings.org, which tries to be more objective, has Szeged tied with a number of other schools for at 432 globally (of course that's only considering the CS department).

(FWIW I think ranking schools like this is generally harmful, and even "objective" rankings will still have plenty of biases baked in)

alksjdalkj··on I read the federal government’s Zero-Trust Memo so you don’t have to
Totally locking down a computer to just a pre-approved set of software is a huge step towards securing it from the kind of attackers most individuals, companies, and governments are concerned with. Sacrificing "software freedom" for that kind of security is a trade off that the vast majority of users will be willing to make - and I think the free software community will need to come to terms with that fact at some point and figure out what they want to do about it.
alksjdalkj··on Google Is Forcing Me to Dump a Perfectly Good Phone
> So, as an order of magnitude, the price asked by Qualcomm for extended support is 1M$.

I'll second the request for a source for this, $1M seems ridiculously low.
