algorithm314··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
Life is all about tradeoffs. Mathematics have no tradeoffs. We need more engineers.
algorithm314··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
They just want lower ping times. Why don't they put the non ML stuff into space?
algorithm314··on bzip3
sorry palaiologos. I just looked into the code and it is different enough from my compressor. I just looked the description and it looked similar sorry. Just tested it with enwik9

Source of agiannis_text. He probably decompiled it.

Bro just decompile agiannis_text
algorithm314··on European Commission Revives Push for Encryption Backdoors in ProtectEU Strategy
If they want mass surveillance they must allow to massively spy on them. It's not protectEU. It is protect them.
algorithm314··on GNU Texmacs
There is also a fork of TeXmacs called Mogan https://github.com/MoganLab/mogan
algorithm314··on GLM-5: Targeting complex systems engineering and long-horizon agentic tasks
Can't they just run the output through a compiler to get feedback? Syntax errors seem easier to get right.
algorithm314··on GLM-5: Targeting complex systems engineering and long-horizon agentic tasks
Here is the pricing per M tokens. https://docs.z.ai/guides/overview/pricing

Why is GLM 5 more expensive than GLM 4.7 even when using sparse attention?

There is also a GLM 5-code model.

algorithm314··on Linux Kernel Explorer
No language server in this explorer, so it is less useful.
algorithm314··on Starlink's current problem is capacity
I think the US created Starlink for military use. It provides world wide coverage and very small latency that helps a lot with UAVs. UAVs that aren't in line of sight need satellite communication. They just allow the public to use part of it, so as to reduce the cost of the system.

algorithm314··on Gitly: A light and fast GitHub/GitLab alternative written in V lang (pre-alpha)
Don't like that it tries to mimic Github UI.
algorithm314··on JPEG XL
For some images like https://storage.googleapis.com/demos.webmproject.org/webp/cm... jpeg xl is really behind.
algorithm314··on Hasura GraphQL Engine and SQL Server
Yes indeed losing money :-)
algorithm314··on Philips LEDs from Dubai: The Royal Lights You Can’t Buy
Simply put when there is lower power factor, there are higher losses into cables. And It is not always negative power that causes this (as many say). For a bridge rectifier the power is always positive.
algorithm314··on Israel, Cyprus and Greece agree to link power grids via subsea cable
The person I was refering is Karaol. Even the top image that is described as his own work and is used in the main Euroasia site without any attribution. You can see the image in the main site here https://euroasia-interconnector.com/at-glance/the-big-pictur...

The article fails to address the controversy between Greece and Euroasia interconnector. The only reference I can find is that in the top image, the line connecting Attika and Crete became dashed at some time. Also Greece cited that Ariadne interconnector is a company with only 25k capital and no previous completed project.

algorithm314··on Israel, Cyprus and Greece agree to link power grids via subsea cable
Which is mostly an advertisement. Probably the main author is linked to the Euroasia Interconnector.

Also note that there is little reference for the Greek part of the interconnector for which there was a great debate. Greece decided to create the part connecting Crete with Attica on it's own citing delays that cost Greece hundrends of millions a year because it is forced to operate diesel plants in Crete.

Also Greece also has the longest and deepest AC connection in the world under construction (2 cables connecting Peloponesse with Crete). One of the cables is already operational.

algorithm314··on What Is Huffman Coding?
One of the fastest Huffman compression libraries is FPC https://github.com/algorithm314/FPC/ It even has compression ratio better than some AC implementations. Better than ZSTD's
algorithm314··on Starlink is now Accepting General Pre-orders
For source just ask what Russians say. https://arstechnica.com/science/2021/01/russia-may-fine-citi...

Keep in mind, that searching for sources for military stuff, doesn't make a lot of sense. They are mostly classified.

But yes while the project was initiated for military purposes, they also want consumers to reduce the amount they have to pay.

algorithm314··on Starlink is now Accepting General Pre-orders
What most people don't understand, is that Starlink is a military first service. Their primary customer is the US military. The most obvious application is UAVs where latency is critical. The consumer part is probably just marketing. It doesn't make much economic sense. Imagine they wanted to launch 1000s of classified military satellites. Everyone would be opposed.
algorithm314··on FEX-Emu – a x86 and x86-64 linux usermode emulator
Any comparison with box86? Can it run with other archs like riscv as backend?
algorithm314··on Berty: Peer-to-peer messaging app that works with or without internet access
Jami is a very good p2p messenger - teleconferencing app. There are still some bugs, but it is usable. The next version is probably going to have group chats.
algorithm314··on AMD Ryzen 9 5980HS Cezanne Review: Ryzen 5000 Mobile Tested
The most probable thing is that APU are low margin products and if they released an 8-core APU like in mobile they would have cannibalized the non APU parts
algorithm314··on AMD Ryzen 9 5980HS Cezanne Review: Ryzen 5000 Mobile Tested
And still no Desktop APU since ZEN+.(Except Renoir which is only for OEMs). Maybe AMD wants you to buy non APU cpus so that you also buy a GPU from them.
algorithm314··on New Transistor Structures At 3nm/2nm
No smaller dimensions -> thinner wires -> higher resistance per length.
algorithm314··on GitHub is fully available in Iran
Probably they said to the US government. "What's the point of blocking iranian developers if we can look into their code?"
