alexslobodnik··on Forget privacy: you're terrible at targeting anyway (2019)
Good targeting is acquiring customers at a profitable cost.

Bad targeting is acquiring customers at an unprofitable cost.

The difference can be 5% conversion for a segement of prospects vs. 10% for another.

In both instances the majority of prospects are not interested. Or more charitable, not interested right now.

Expectations for perfect ads and targeting is unreasonable.

alexslobodnik··on Surprisingly little alcohol can affect heart rate variability
People can test this for themselves with a common fitness tracker.

The Apple Watch records this data.

Anecdotally, 1.5 drinks within 5 hours of going to sleep raises resting heart rate by 5%-10%. My friends who have an Apple Watch have similar results.

My personal data on HRV and booze is too erratic to draw conclusions.

alexslobodnik··on Ask HN: I built it, nobody came, now what?
I couldn't figure out how to use this tool.

Consider making a screen recording with a voice over what it is doing.

Put an excel work flow side by side vs. this. That shows why this is better/faster/cleaner ... etc.

alexslobodnik··on Shrinking Income Inequality
Allocator is better term vs. shuffler. Consider revising your terminology.
alexslobodnik··on Self-compassion is not self-indulgence
Each article has its own audience. Maybe this article isn't for you, that's cool. Others may find it helpful. Even if you know something, it is helpful to be reminded of it from time to time.
alexslobodnik··on Rents for the rich are going down, rents for the poor are going up. Why?
<<The penalties that the RLTO imposes on landlords are often grossly disproportionate to the infractions, largely because the ordinance allows tenants to recover their reasonable attorneys' fees and court costs, even in legal proceedings brought to recover something as nominal as a $100 statutory penalty (and even if the penalized omission was utterly harmless). What’s more, dozens of Chicago lawyers specialize in representing tenants in these types of cases.>>

Anecdotally, landlords are moving/moved to having move-in fees over deposits due to the legal technicalities of handling them properly.

alexslobodnik··on Excel Never Dies
Excel is faster to get off the ground. You can get a initial feel for a data set in excel far faster than in Python of SQL. I grant that may be the practitioners limitations than the software.
alexslobodnik··on Roof blows off new Tesla Model Y
Seems like the number of complaints I've heard about Tesla has stayed the same over the last couple of years.

Given there are a lot more of them made, seems like they are getting better.

(I am an owner of Model 3 and find it to be a joy of a car.)

alexslobodnik··on Deep learning job postings have collapsed in the past six months
Or it could be that a lot of data is wrong. It may be "technically" correct, ie the table in a database produces X. It is no surprise that executives would ignore what the "data" says because they don't trust it.

A lot of time they are right to ignore it. I've seen tables say X, but there was some flaw up the capture stack. Very few data analyst have the broad based knowledge and dedication needed to trace the data stack to establish the needed trust with the executive team.

alexslobodnik··on Weirdos in the depression
I'd be careful with that advice. Sports are great conversation starters. People want to share what they are passionate about. I may not want to spend hours talking to them about it, but a few minutes that's fine. Who knows maybe you will learn something useful.
alexslobodnik··on Tesla Model 3 Drives into Overturned Truck in Apparent Autopilot Failure
Directly from Tesla

<<In the 1st quarter, we registered one accident for every 4.68 million miles driven in which drivers had Autopilot engaged. For those driving without Autopilot but with our active safety features, we registered one accident for every 1.99 million miles driven.
