alexkiritz··on New York's Strand bookstore fights back over landmark status
I still think the most notable thing about this story is that the owner of a New York City bookstore is married to a US Senator from Oregon. The last time this came up people said she's usually in the store when they visit.
alexkiritz··on What to do once you admit that decentralization never seems to work (2018)
Web 2.0 has been in use by a majority of people for maybe ten years now and the internet shows no signs of going away.

To say that decentralization will never happen is nuts.

alexkiritz··on Jaguar and Audi SUVs Fail to Dent Tesla’s Electric-Car Dominance
A 2 seater Tesla would sell very well. Tesla would make it cool. There are already multiple companies that have recently made very cool designs for 2 seater EVs but failed due to bad leadership and running out of funding.

Unfortunately Elon is set on robotic Uber being the cheaper option.

alexkiritz··on Jaguar and Audi SUVs Fail to Dent Tesla’s Electric-Car Dominance
Because they feel they’re safer or cooler. Car companies are able to charge more for them so they’ve been pushing them in every way imaginable. Very weird that you didn’t know this.
alexkiritz··on Jaguar and Audi SUVs Fail to Dent Tesla’s Electric-Car Dominance
That's an issue Tesla has, but I don't think that would at all explain a drop in Model 3 sales.
alexkiritz··on Jaguar and Audi SUVs Fail to Dent Tesla’s Electric-Car Dominance
Do you seriously think most people who buy larger cars now actually need them? Of course not.

People do cross comparisons and generally prefer the Model 3 for a variety of reasons. And it's cheaper.

alexkiritz··on Netflix’s biggest bingers get hit with higher internet costs
The average person spends something like 35 hours a week watching TV and the average household spent $285 per month on media last year. Not spending a large amount of your income on a nice TV is kind of insane given that.
alexkiritz··on Netflix’s biggest bingers get hit with higher internet costs
You can get a giant 4K TV for well under $1000. All of this moaning about not being able to tell the difference between 4K needs to die.
alexkiritz··on Netflix’s biggest bingers get hit with higher internet costs
It’s not even remotely. It’s equivalent to 3 mbps. It’s not a technological limit. It’s only imposed to extract more money and discourage streaming. It sets the country back technologically. It also discourages content creators from jumping to 4K.
alexkiritz··on Netflix’s biggest bingers get hit with higher internet costs
I can’t imagine many people use Viasat to watch Netflix when satellite TV exists. Satellite based ISPs are the only ones with a legitimate reason to impose data caps.
alexkiritz··on Faster internet is coming, but only for a few
Downloading and uploading large files more quickly.
alexkiritz··on Faster internet is coming, but only for a few
With the amount of money Americans have spent on internet everyone could have 100 gigabit by now.

The real question is how telcos have managed to spend all of their income. I know mine Frontier spends it all on interest payments for the service areas they’ve bought.

alexkiritz··on Faster internet is coming, but only for a few
I remember never getting more than a fraction of the speed. Like maybe 200 mbps max on a 500 mbps connection when downloading a file. I assumed with the number of people with gigabit connections two years ago I’d have at least run into a few servers that didn’t throttle that low.
alexkiritz··on Faster internet is coming, but only for a few
Verizon sold most of its landline business to Frontier over the past decade. While the few remaining Verizon FiOS customers got upgraded to gigabit, the Frontier FiOS customers were left with the old technology. Our Frontier contract just expired and we’re upgrading from 150 mbps to 500 mbps for about $5 more tomorrow. But I’m not optimistic about the speed. I tried paying $150/mo for the Frontier 500 mbps package two years ago and downloads never came close to that speed, the only thing that did were speed tests. Hopefully they’ve optimized more.

The saddest part is that the sales rep insisted that we’d need a modem, I’m sure because the majority of their service areas have been left on DSL.

That completely contradicts my experience and everything else I've read from others.

Less than 60 hz is generally annoying when trying to use a screen as a monitor because of cursor lag, but almost all video is at 30 fps or less so 30 hz is fine for video.

alexkiritz··on 100 Supercharger Stations
Definitely more power than a small factory. A six station supercharger could be pulling 500 kW.

Up until 2012, demand charges from Souther California Edison kicked in at 20 kW at a rate of $17 per kW. One of the first 50 kW quick-chargers in LA county was shut down for months after the owner realized that operating it would tack on an extra $1000 to his monthly bill.

alexkiritz··on Amazon’s Glacier secret: BDXL?
I was under the impressions that old disks generally fail by getting stuck. If they spin them up a few times a day that would seem to solve that problem.

They could even have them just plugged in to power and laying in racks with custom firmware that triggers drives to automatically spin up ever few hours/days. Then they could just be manually plugging them in to retrieve data when data from a drive is requested.
