alexis_fr··on DigitalOcean is laying off staff
$140 user here. I need DO to stay online for its simplicity. I simply don’t understand AWS and I’m too scared to wreak a subnet while trying to add lambdas and API Gateways. I wouldn’t mind spending double if necessary. Also, clicking in Create Droplet then on a big « $10, xGB RAM » button is incredibly clear to me. Then I « ansible » it and it’s live.

Please don’t add too many services to Digital Ocean ;)

alexis_fr··on How Carlos Ghosn Was Smuggled Out of Japan
I don’t believe the justice of France or USA is any better. Ghosn seems to be discovering how swift the justice is, like in any country.

USA has 95% convictions based on plea deals, so the investigation is only complete enough to convince the accused that he is isolated enough in his jail that he won’t be able to build a defense, but the accusation is never formally proved, it’s just the accused who agrees to admit crimes. Examples vary, for example pharmacists who are legally authorized to sell legal cannabis have been convicted because they couldn’t bring proof.

In France we have jihadists who get freed, rapists who get away with it because they are recently immigrated and « don’t have the western codes » (true quote from the judge), people who get French nationality after having assaulted a policeman; We also have people in jail for way lighter offenses, but who are public cases with lots of media pressure.

Although I’m all for a severe justice system, and process-based justice, I’m not convinced half of the convicts are there with a proven proof from the accusation ; rather, they couldn’t defend themselves.

alexis_fr··on YouTube Gives Us Love Without the Messiness
...because dating is the motivation for young men to accomplish awesome things, according to this video. It’s a fun thought experiment, though:

- On one side, women provide half the work (a recent article on HN said they were now the majority of US workers),

- On the other, if access to family life was a motivator in the 50ies, what is the motivator in the 2020ies, now that dating isn’t... vetted by parents/society/social status? Will we keep accomplishing awesome things? How much motivation will one put into it given the rewards are now rather inversely correlated with work? (Working out, travelling the world, doing NGO work is opposite to having a career, and it’s not even enough to grant one hopes in relationships).

alexis_fr··on Jeffrey Epstein and MIT: FAQs
“Suicide” is also a totally unfounded accusation on paar with a conspiracy theory: There isn’t a single proof of suicide. Yet all the newspapers repeated it gullibly until social media made it impossible to ignore the opposite. So why wasn’t this affirmation entirely disqualified first hand?

At best, the doctor can affirm that Epstein died. Little more. Suicide is associating a storytelling, a blatantly lying storytelling in the face of the public as long as no proof of intent was even available when the suicide was affirmed. We basically know nothing on the circumstances of his death, so the suicide word was more than unfounded.

alexis_fr··on Women now make up the majority of the U.S. labor force
2.3 million men are in prison in USA. The definition is “divided by the total noninstitutionalized, civilian working-age population.”

As a counter-example, average IQ at the workplace is 110. Where’s everyone under IQ90? Injured, suicide, drug addicts etc.

alexis_fr··on Judge orders Google to turn over a full year of actor’s data
Sometimes it’s a matter of making a point. I mean, who likes the cookie law (and bear in mind that US people don’t even see it remotely as frequently as europeans). Some people just want to send the message that EU is going too far.
alexis_fr··on Apple AirPods: iPhone accessory or the next big thing?
He’s saying it should have been named the “Walkman Distance” or some inspiring name that evokes phone and walkman. Not the number that sounds like a container dimension or like the lubricant WD40.
alexis_fr··on Apple is suing iOS virtualization vendor Corellium for violating DMCA
Isn’t there an exception in US law for security and compatibility purpose, with even the ability to decompile software?

Especially if Apple doesn’t provide any way to do it legally, then they can have a chance at trying to convince a jury. I agree hosting and reselling the service is pushing the question a bit far, but it may be deemed legit depending on the jury. IANAL, obviously, just asking the question.

alexis_fr··on Dad takes son to Mongolia to get him off his phone
« The Boy Crisis » by Warren Farrell is a good study, it tells a few causes concerning boys. Basically they are forgotten in class or in family because we’re all focussed on equality for women, and they know they’re not the priority. Addictions to video games, porn, media consumption are only a result of a broader societal change into a society of equality.

He’s said to be controversial like Peterson, he talks about the same topics, but from a male-feminist point of view, as he was president of the New York chapter of the National Organization for Women (Peterson is on the opposite spectrum as a Christian/conservative, Farrell is rather a leftist/equalitarian. Both controversial but raising good points).

alexis_fr··on Dad takes son to Mongolia to get him off his phone
It’s the « People are boring » effect, compared to even a Youtube video which is a compacted speech that constantly catches your attention.

However, relationships are also broken, and we should do something about it as much as decrease phone usage. I’m not sure which way is the causation here, but countless times I have told my needs to people/relatives (I need to avoid being constantly put down as a man, specifically, I have cleaned my room and I have a six-figure job after all) and people are wired to reject that idea and claim men as a class don’t deserve to be told positive things. I retreat to my phone by despair, not because the phone is interesting. More recently I have found far-right friends, but again, it’s just because they respect me, not because it’s awesome: It’s a palliative, not a solution.

It’s discussed in the book « The boy crisis » of Warren Farrell (former president of NOW, the National Organization for Women), but hey, people claim he is « controversial » so no-one’s gonna take it into account.

Men — need — some — love. Or they’ll find it elsewhere.

alexis_fr··on Carlos Ghosn Flees to Lebanon to Escape Japan Legal System
99% conviction rate, and 23-day detention without charges. One can imagine the various ways to torture people with no lasting marks in 23 days, including the « cold room » (soaking someone in freezing water in the aircon, which made Michael P Fay accuse himself in Singapore in 1995). The thing that I didn’t know is, it is apparently renewable in Ghosn’s case without charges, then converted to half a year of detention.
alexis_fr··on French executives convicted in the suicides of 35 of their workers
You are right for private employment, but those people were hired under public servant contracts in a public company at the time, with lifetime employment guarantee.

So you are correct, employment is too protected, both in private and public sector, but in addition, the state promises too much. I have seen so many public servants being harassed and/or depressed because they didn’t fit/like their job, that I confirm lifetime jobs make no-one happy.

alexis_fr··on French executives convicted in the suicides of 35 of their workers
> Employees are free to leave

Those jobs were civil servants with lifetime job guarantee in what was, at the time of hiring, a public company.

Of course the whole question is how to transition to private company with private employment, but that doesn’t cancel the fact that civil servants had made serious concessions to get a lifetime job (lower grade than what they could get in the private sector after their diploma, in exchange for lifetime security), which artificially put them in a weak negotiation position (few savings, mental dedication to only one speciality).

alexis_fr··on Airplanes and Accounting Games: The Coming Boeing Collapse?
> MBAs thrown in jail for murder

All I see in the currently best civilization of the world is MBAs not getting jailed when a mass crime is committed. HSBC for managing the drug cartel’s money in USA, Volkswagen for deceit on pollution, Boeing/FAA for collusion (although it could change, but doesn’t seem likely). Is it just an evolutionary mistake and in a few generation we’ll accept to treat company-baked criminality as a sum of individual criminal acts deserving prison, or is there a stable factor where whatever level of development we reach, company managers get away with it?

alexis_fr··on France's AMF watchdog fines Bloomberg €5M over Vinci hoax
I would like the ability of pointing out journalistic bias in other media so customers stop listening to them, and this requires source materials to compare to the way the article is written. Our problem is not how we consume media, but how others do; Enabling a sane discussion to highlight that the article misinterpreted the source is part of the discussion. As long as we live in the same voting space, I want entry points to criticize their articles.
alexis_fr··on Boeing to Suspend 737 Max Production in January
Especially if they rename it and sell it under a new brand. I’d go for a “737 Neo”, only nerds can make the difference (even between a Boeing and an Airbus).
alexis_fr··on Twitter funding a team to develop an open standard for social media
But it looks like a ranking where one can only rank at the bottom. Who is the company most loved by developers? GitHub? Stripe? Atlassian? SalesForce? Each of them has done something wrong at some point, and it may even be the sign of management’s ability to get rid of cruft, even if those choices don’t make us happy.

alexis_fr··on Elementary OS 5.1 Hera
It’s worth developing: Pop! is the fork of Elementary by System76, which is known for high-quality open-source laptops/desktops. I have never tried either so I can’t assess the quality. From the screenshots I have seen, it remains Linux, so not as smooth as macOS.

alexis_fr··on United orders 50 new Airbus long-range jets to replace Boeing 757s
> Most of Air France & KLM fleet are comprised of Boeing planes

Are you sure about that? On WP I see 79 Boeing out of 223 planes for Airbus, but I’m not expert. Is there any wider fleet to consider? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_France

KLM has 13 Airbus out of 123 airframes, that part is correct. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KLM

HOP is mostly Bombardier/Embraer, etc.

alexis_fr··on How to proceed when you run out of cash, but you still believe?
“Blogger” started like this, according to the interview in “Founders at Work”, an interesting book.

The guy of blogger had to fire pretty much everyone, and it was on bay still running, and everyone angry at the former employer. A few months pass and Blogger took off.

alexis_fr··on United orders 50 new Airbus long-range jets to replace Boeing 757s
Airbus scandal won’t come “in a month”: Boeing’s problems became public in 2013 and it is the same problem over and over.

- The Ducommon airframes in 2013, problem is FAA delegated certification to Boeing,

- The batteries, albeit smaller,

- The MAX, 2 crashes due to oversight and to the FAA delegating certification to Boeing.

Boeing’s problem didn’t come in a day, but in 20 years since the merge with MD, who had the same lose and fast culture. Airbus is safe for the time being, even if risks always exist, political instability for example. Not the case for the moment.

alexis_fr··on FDA bowed to industry for decades as alarms were sounded over talc
Thank you, the difference between talc and baby powder wasn’t obvious for me (especially as a non-native). Quoting Google:

“Talc is a clay mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate with the chemical formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2.”

alexis_fr··on Longevity Linked to Proteins That Calm Overexcited Neurons
Life expectancy was the same for both genders in 1900 (in Europe at least).

We’ve just made continually more progress for women than for men. Nowadays for example: lots of research on female cancer (twice more funding than male cancers, for the same incidence and mortality) and domestic violence, little budgets on suicide. Lots of money for equality at work where women are fewer, little money for boys massively dropping at school. Practically no help if you are a man facing a male-specific issue, which is why a lot of them engage in the army or in Daesh (depending which side they tilt towards), and practically all killers you know are boys victims of harassment, absent father syndrome and on the spectrum of autism, with no help from the social fabric.

Men live shorter not because it is nature, but because we’ve made less progress for them.

alexis_fr··on Uber loses licence to operate in London, will still operate while appealing
According to what I witness in the current comments, a first step for taxis would be to mandate a working credit card machine, under penalties.

However, it seems so many many taxis were frauding their taxes, that it became cultural and enforced.

Which means taxis, which are already known as the top thief job in the world, also steal the citizen on a third level after the ride itself and after choosing the night rate at noon: taxes.

I dare to say Uber, as bad as they can ever be with wages under the legal minimum, can still be a better behaved citizen.

alexis_fr··on I am no longer able to use Google with Lynx
Blind enablement also allows easier webscraping, which is what I think Google is more worried about.

It has solutions, like Google voicing out the contents, instead of doing a webpage that is so scrappable that screenreaders can parse it.
