alephxyz··on Alexei Navalny has died
> Actually the USA does have a defense pact with the Ukraine.

The Budapest memorandum is not a defense pact. The only obligation the US has is to e escalate to the UN security council if Ukraine gets nuked.

alephxyz··on 525 Private jets departed Las Vegas after the Super Bowl ended
> However, it might cause rich people to pollute more by using their cars instead of flying, so there's a balancing act.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is ~$1/liter vs ~$.5 for regular fuel. For a "big" Global 7500 that burns 2kL/hr the markup is $1k/hr on a plane that usually costs $15-20k/hr to rent.

Doesn't seem like a big markup for people who care about their public image.

alephxyz··on I applied for a software role at FedEx and was asked to take a personality test
Giving a personality test in a competitive context where it's expected that some traits are valued more than others makes the results void. It's a good example of goodhart's law. Why would you let a potential employer know you're neurotic or disagreeable?
alephxyz··on Fossil is quitting smartwatches
Yep. I'm willing to pay extra for something dead simple that does what it needs to do and nothing more. No ads or distractions, connecting to sensors over ANT+ "just works", devices are supported for years, and if I think of a useful feature or metric to display I can create a monkey C module in about an hour. Makes me wish all IOT devices were like that. My only gripe with them is their segmentation of devices with nearly identical hardware into different segments (e.g. edge explore vs edge 130) and walling off features.
alephxyz··on Hugging Face and Google partner for AI collaboration
The proof is in the pudding as the saying goes, and right now Google's llm pudding is neither the tastiest nor the most popular around.
alephxyz··on Yann LeCun: Human-level artificial intelligence is going to take a long time
You can get an ML workstation with 2xRTX4090 for around 10k. A 4xA800 setup tops out at 100k and should last you a few years. I consider that fairly affordable to do bleeding edge research especially compared to other fields.
alephxyz··on Ubisoft Says Out Loud: We Want People to Get Used to Not Owning What They Bought
Unfortunately, even when purchased on steam, Ubisoft games will launch through the Ubisoft app (forgot what it's called), where they're free to make you sign up to play and advertise their subscription services to you.
alephxyz··on Remote work doesn't seem to affect productivity, Fed study finds
Doing the dishes is boring but it's offset by the satisfaction you feel from having a clean kitchen. Some tasks are both boring and make you feel useless after because all you're left with is a report that will rot in a middle management storage cabinet. I think a few 19th century German philosophers wrote about that extensively :)
alephxyz··on Ubuntu Pro

alephxyz··on Cloudflare employee posts layoff call with HR and goes viral [video]
they're wrong. Employees in California have the right to request their HR files including performance reviews and anything used to determine their termination. https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/faq_righttoinspectpersonnelfiles...
alephxyz··on Ask HN: Why is Google killing Waze if so many consider it superior to Maps?
Huh I was about to reply that Waze is monetized too but it seems like they stopped temporarily:

>As of September 1, 2023, Waze is no longer selling Ads. We have turned down the current Waze Ads product. Advertisers can no longer purchase new ads. We are already working to transition Waze Ads to Google Ads technology and look forward to helping advance your business objectives through our new Waze Ads product soon.

alephxyz··on Apple responds to the Beeper iMessage saga: 'We took steps to protect our users'
Beeper or Apple?
alephxyz··on Canada is so expensive that some Ukrainian immigrants are leaving
Why are they moving to Toronto? It's the most expensive Canadian city. Hamilton, Montréal or even Mississauga are all cheaper than Stockholm and there's tons of jobs.
alephxyz··on Microsoft defends Edge's predatory practices with cringe, audacious reply on X
Or "disable until next windows update then silently re-enable it and claim it's a bug if you get caught"
alephxyz··on Cybertruck Launch
> Bikes get out of harms way faster and in a much mire agile fashion compared to cars

That may be true but there are situations where you physically can't get out of harm's way even with good reflexes.

alephxyz··on OpenAI Employees Say Firm's Chief Scientist Has Been Making Spiritual Claims
Hedging their bets wrt Roko's basilisk?
alephxyz··on Divide and Concur: A Radical Plan for Peace in Europe (1920)
I'm not convinced by this argument. Plenty of ethnostates waging war on each other as well as stable multiethnic states.
alephxyz··on Taking my e-bike as an undercover food delivery rider
a lot of people with student visas in Canada choose to do it since they're limited to 20hr/week of work. You make a bit more money doing ~30 hours of Uber eats with 20 hours spent actually delivering food than working 20 hours at minimum wage.
alephxyz··on CodeCrafters CEO adds his paid service as a next step after finishing Rustlings
> That being said, everyone claiming it was "shady" is off base. Sarup didn't make any effort to hide his affiliation (I personally would have assumed my affiliation is obvious if it's the first line on my GitHub page) and if that was the intent it would have been trivial to use a sock puppet account.

I'd give them (codecrafters) the benefit of the doubt if they hadn't opened half a dozen similar PRs to similar repos using the account of someone employed by them but without any clear affiliation in their github profile.

alephxyz··on Bored Ape conference attendees wake up with eye pain, vision loss
Bring sunglasses (and ear protection while you're at it) when going to a concert.
alephxyz··on Montreal’s new rapid transit line saved millions per mile
The REM makes a lot more sense if you think of it as a way to funnel money from the local and provincial governments to the CDPQ.
alephxyz··on Montreal’s new rapid transit line saved millions per mile
Indeed, about 80% of the tracks for the new rail system, including the most expensive bits (across the st Lawrence river, through downtown and dense suburbs, under the Mont-Royal) were on pre-existing railways or rights of ways. The rest was built aboveground next to a highway (with a small branch dug underground towards the airport).

By comparison, the Blue line metro extension is being built from scratch, including expropriations, and the projected cost is CAD6.4B for 5-6km of new tunnels and give stations.

alephxyz··on A carbohydrate revolution is speeding up pro cycling
They actually started using powermeters in the 90s, Lemond was one of the first to train using one. Nothing compared to what we have today though.
alephxyz··on A carbohydrate revolution is speeding up pro cycling
PEDs aren't just for endurance. Prescription painkillers, stimulants and corticosteroids are easy to get prescriptions for or even TUEs. The typical player in the NHL gets tested 2-3 times a year, and almost never in the off season. Some sports barely test more than once a year. In cycling it's closer to once a month for an average rider but it can get a lot higher if you're successful as most orgs will test their top 3 after every stage or race.

alephxyz··on Google Abandons Web Environment Integrity API
> Attacks and doxing make me personally MORE likely to support stronger safety features in chromium, as such acts increase my suspicion that there is significant intimidation from criminals who are afraid this feature will disrupt their illegal and/or unethical businesses, and I don't give in to criminals or bullies

That makes it _really_ hard to believe they're debating in good faith.

Anyway the entire thread makes it sound like they're temporarily backing down but still intenting to implement something similar in the future:.

alephxyz··on Black 4.0

alephxyz··on Compare how GPT-2, 3, 3.5 and 4 answer the same questions
>While performance on benchmarks typically improves smoothly, sometimes specific capabilities emerge without warning (Wei et al., 2022a).

The conclusions of that paper aren't very convincing (see https://arxiv.org/abs/2304.15004 ).
