Important to note that office apps and Macro-tools were essential before the Web and Mobile apps became popular. Businesses have to carefully balance between Adopting the Newest tech/fad and Growing their business, and Staffing/skills.
Whilst a physical button may be disabled to indicate being functional-but-not-ready, in software one doesn't have to show/display them until they are ready for action. If the Form is partially valid, show a Message instead of a Button, then when it is valid, pop the Action button clearly on display.
Personally I like to leave the button enabled, check the Action can be performed (form valid etc), and notify the User of errors, progress etc. It's better to communicate with the User exactly, than imply messages - it's a form, not a puzzle or an opportunity to play physical jokes on the User (gotcha, can't press this!).
the problem is not the User wanting to download your content, bypassing ads, or spoofing Geo location using VPNs, or sharing of passwords.
The real issue is with the Providers/Vendors relying on the Web as a Cheap Ways & Means to quickly access, conquer the market.
The web is a generic platform, powered by general-purpose tech and methods, therefore it's "open", "cheap", and easily accessible, that's why it's popular and adopted globally.
There are tradeoffs - choose web for being cheap, open and accessible, or chose to build expensive, risky custom standalone services.
seek forgiveness rather than permission - gets you launched - gets you better
which HN post was that?
From a startup project point of view, this project has way too much functionality (ui activity), without much user-base. No doubt a cool engineering project though - nicely done.
p.s. I never wrote this message :P
Applicants for Junior roles should really get some feedback, short-but-sweet, it's a learning processes too.
I like that :)
nah, wanna go old-school, use inkwell pen, or better still feather + ink for hard-core hackers! focuses the mind, you've gotta know your grammar, syntax etcetera. non of that autocomplete sorcery for me
i didn't see a pro/paid version - unless they're planning to offer a post-processing cloud subscription later on...
it seems this may be more an issue with being shy, than a coding issue :P
in my view, language is a Style, so coding in C is c-style coding.
when i started coding in python (small projects initially), my code cried-out Java Java (typing, packaging, naming, oop), and took nearly as long to write - I laughed my head of when I realized, just because I could doesn't mean I should.
what worked well in last ~20 years isn't guaranteed to continue in that trajectory in the next 5 or 10 years even, since polarized Geo-political shifts make it more dangerous for a tightly-coupled enterprise [1] (enterprise-to-product coupling).
short-term makes sense to couple-tightly with a product, but not mid-term or long-term, for that it's better to focus on the market - think of the effects that sanctions (political or economical) or shortages (human or materials [chips, metals, oil etc]) could have on the enterprise's trajectory.
if you've got a monopoly, it's a good time to diversify [2], and sooner rather than later [1]
[1] enterprise could be a company or even a government
[2] hint "alliances"
as parts/ports are ever-increasingly multi-functional (and more advanced), there needs to be regulations in place to ensure no lockdowns, or preferential treatment. Of course we need hardened security and privacy, but I think Software should be used to detect & notify of atypical/dubious device parts so the User can chose/decide - akin to an AntiVirus.
If certain level of security/safety is required (say gov device, Chief Execs, VIPs etc) then create an Industry Standard and let the OS report on device's Compliance. This way, the market (users) brock low-quality/nefarious tech, not a corporate.
[1] I don't but tempted to try, like its data-types concept
cameras and microphones are very cheap these days.
of course if one's not bothered about privacy, then the issue doesn't exist (magic)
would be nice to see on the 'Why' page [1] stats around pets lost, stolen, the need to track, bit about price etc.
as an engineering IOT project it's exciting for sure, looks good.
one can rationalize all sorts, but certain real-life metaphors don't have to map closely to the digital realm.
if my CreatePizza function relies on remote/dynamic code/features (realtime functionality), then it's simpler and possibly safer to re-create than re-use. Depends on the use-case.
From the OP download page "Visual Studio for Mac builds on top of MonoDevelop" [1], and the Install link points to Visual Studio for Mac, but this is now discontinued, in favor of Visual Studio Code [2]. The github repo is archived Oct-2021 [3].
