ahiknsr··on Migrating Facebook to MySQL 8.0
> I suspect they deal with this in the form of some sort of caching outside of MySQL, but I haven't read into it.

It is handled by TAO, https://engineering.fb.com/2013/06/25/core-data/tao-the-powe...

ahiknsr··on U.S. and key allies accuse China of Microsoft Exchange cyberattacks
> Don't use vulnerable software

Is there any widely used software that doesn't have any vulnerabilities?

ahiknsr··on Sundar Pichai warns of threats to internet freedom
> Third, a lot of Pichai's big bets have failed: Google Glass, Google Plus, Google Wave, Project Loon

> He's been responsible for a lot of Google products.

He might have been responsible but i wouldn't call those projects as Pichai's big bets.

ahiknsr··on Is Alexandra Elbakyan in real trouble this time?
> Why is she bullish on potentially winning the case? Is there a law in India that she is counting on? Or as I suspect she is counting on a sympathetic judge who might rule in her favor by finding some precedent from around the world.

Yes. Indian courts have ruled that photocopying books isn’t copyright violation, i assume we can expect a similar judgement for copying research papers.

from https://www.indialegallive.com/cover-story-articles/il-featu...

"Copyright, specially in literary works, is thus not an inevitable, divine, or natural right that confers on authors the absolute ownership of their creations. It is designed rather to stimulate activity and progress in the arts for the intellectual enrichment of the public. Copyright is intended to increase and not to impede the harvest of knowledge. It is intended to motivate the creative activity of authors and inventors in order to benefit the public."

ahiknsr··on Amazon knew seller data was used to boost company sales
> I had one time a talk to a director from an important online shop (top 3 in the country in that specific field) and "this sort of things" was exactly the reason why they chose to use MS Azure instead of AWS. Imagine how deep it can go

This seems to be very common. https://www.forbes.com/sites/bobevans1/2018/07/18/walmart-ci...

ahiknsr··on EU says Apple’s App Store breaks competition rules after Spotify complaint
No. "Apple blocked Facebook from informing users that Apple would collect 30 percent of in-app purchases made through a planned new feature, Facebook tells Reuters. Apple said the update violated an App Store rule that doesn’t let developers show “irrelevant” information to users"

ahiknsr··on EU says Apple’s App Store breaks competition rules after Spotify complaint
> You also don’t have to buy a subscription in the app, do you? You can pay on the web directly to Spotify and use the subscription in the app.

Apple doesn't allow App developers to Inform users about Alternate payment options.

ahiknsr··on EU says Apple’s App Store breaks competition rules after Spotify complaint
> Apple has been pretty transparent about the rules

I disagree. Apple doesn't let App developers to inform users about the 30% tax. How is that transparent?

ahiknsr··on GitHub investigating crypto-mining campaign abusing its server infrastructure
They are using the CPU. This (https://github.com/Bhargav1912/test_1/pull/2/files) is one the PRs abusing the GitHub actions. It looks like they are mining turtlecoin.

ahiknsr··on Epic Games steps up Apple fight with EU antitrust complaint
>Except as soon as it becomes a remotely feasible action (with simple instructions) for the general consumer, a bunch of businesses will start requiring their users to disable "default Grandma mode".

Android already allows side-loading and i don't think any popular app out there is asking users to enable side-loading to install their app. Why do you think the situation would be any different with iOS app store?

ahiknsr··on Epic Games steps up Apple fight with EU antitrust complaint
>Epic demands Apple do a thing = bad for Apple, bad for customers (good for Epic)

not bad for all customers. I would like to side-load third party apps on my Iphone. Remember when app store banned a hn reader app because it showed Covid-related submissions[1]

ahiknsr··on Send Payments in India with WhatsApp
No single app can dominate the market because National Payments Corporation of India has decided to impose a cap on transactions that a single payment application can process.

ahiknsr··on Modi government to set up app store alternative to Google Play, Apple App Store
>>>They are known to blackout journalists, assassinate lawyer, conduct media trials and put anyone speaking against them in jail.

Can you please share some citation for the assassination part. I don't think the Bar Council of India would be happy if a lawyer is assassinated by government.

ahiknsr··on Apple’s T2 security chip jailbreak
"if people choose to pay their way into a walled garden, why should they still care about hardware ownership/repairabilty, etc.?"

I don't like the walled garden but i still brought a iPhone because iPhones get updates for really long time(3 years minimum). Iphone SE(1st gen) released in 2016 got the iOS14 update.

ahiknsr··on Commerce Department Prohibits WeChat and TikTok Transactions
blocking chinese apps is not emulating chinsese government, emulating would be blocking all apps that are not made in US. Right now China is abusing the free trade and US is well with-in its rights to block these apps
ahiknsr··on Commerce Department Prohibits WeChat and TikTok Transactions
Does Chinese law also allow the government to hack into companies when they don't cooperate with government?
