ahemphill··on Ask HN: recommendations for domain registrars
http://domainsite.com is my go-to for many ccTLDs.
ahemphill··on Show HN: Coding noob - first weekend project
Definitely tried it as soon as I saw mention. Extremely easy to implement and fun to boot.
ahemphill··on Lengthen My URL
… And they have an API! Brilliant. Thank you VERY much for pointing that out.
ahemphill··on Lengthen My URL
I thought this would get the original address of a shortened URL. That would actually be useful.
ahemphill··on WiseDame - a “black box” recorder like they have in planes, but for real life
I, too, think it's a good idea but her presentation definitely rubbed me the wrong way.
ahemphill··on Quit Job, Learning to Code
I'm curious too — I'm moving to SF on Friday and would love to find some like-minded people with whom I can live.
ahemphill··on Guide to where your cofounders should live in the SF Bay
Luckily I'll be able to crash with the aforementioned friend for about a week — any longer than that and I'll have to hit up acquaintances or dole out for a hotel or a place on Airbnb.

As for the Social Security card, hopefully that's not commonly a dealbreaker…

Thanks for the advice.

ahemphill··on Guide to where your cofounders should live in the SF Bay
I'm moving to SF in 10 days and I'd like to know the best way to go about securing an apartment. I've been trolling Craigslist for a couple weeks but have not received one response despite in-depth emails. Should I just have my credit report, a couple grand and the ability to drop everything and go look at a place? My friend (who, unfortunately for me, is moving from the Mission to Berkeley) suggested that a lot of people just leave things 'til the last minute. Any insight would be appreciated.
ahemphill··on Ask HN: where are the UI designers in HN?
Ditto.
ahemphill··on Ask HN: What are you working on today?
Today is my last day at work in Connecticut -- in two weeks I'll be moving to San Francisco and seeking a new position. (Anybody looking for a solid, well-rounded front-end guy who wants to dive into more stuff? I'm huge on detail and a quick learner.)
ahemphill··on Ask HN: Starting my own hosting company, any advice?
It is, indeed, very difficult. I co-founded a niche service that offered hosting and support for about a year -- until we succumbed to scaling problems. Just be VERY sure of your business model and cost of doing business beforehand.
ahemphill··on Common css mistakes - no more
I'm not understanding the padding/margin argument. They are separate things.
ahemphill··on Ask HN: I want to start a News Website
More or less. Be aware of your weakness, basically.
ahemphill··on Ask HN: I want to start a News Website
Bias is inherent in every step of the news gathering and reporting process. It better to recognize (and perhaps even highlight) this than to expend energy and resources on pursuing that which is ultimately unattainable. Doing so will go farther in creating credibility and trust than operating under the guise of presenting "just the facts."
ahemphill··on Ask HN: I want to start a News Website
I've been in journalism for about six years now and have worked on some fairly prolific sites; in that time, I've learned that objectivity is a myth. Don't trick yourself into thinking otherwise.

That said, I'd love to offer advice/guidance on a more specific level if you'd like to chat.

ahemphill··on Ask HN: Which logo do you like better? Why?
Frankly, both logos suffer because the concept is not particularly inspired (and has been overdone in the design world, IMHO). That said, the new version does very much one-up the other in execution, though the letterspacing toward the end has been compromised because of the attached letterforms. This throws off the balance significantly. A place to start remedying that issue would be the diagonal stroke on the N, which could certainly stand to be heavier.
