ahemphill··on The last day of linotype at the NYT (1978) [video]
Quark 4 was definitely full of quirks and there were plenty of things it just couldn't do. It featured decent keyboard shortcuts, though, which I once relied on daily for newspaper layout — and which proved quite difficult to teach to my successor as, ultimately, I knew them only by feel!
ahemphill··on Uber disabled Volvo SUV's safety system before fatality
Warning: this article contains an auto-playing video of the incident.
ahemphill··on San Francisco, now with more dystopia
The truncated segment of King St. is presently a well-entrenched shantytown: https://goo.gl/maps/wi9TNPXzLST2
ahemphill··on New York Times learns the possible risks of programmatic advertising
I've worked with Apple on homepage advertising and believe the likelihood of that placement being programmatic is very low.
ahemphill··on Billing with Stripe
"We're sorry, but something went wrong.

We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly."

ahemphill··on How to Build a 'Paywall' That Doesn't Break the Web
Sure does. (In fact, we're implementing some extra features for those who choose to pay.)
ahemphill··on How to Build a 'Paywall' That Doesn't Break the Web
There's an "ignore" button. :)
ahemphill··on Show HN: my humorous and entrepreneurial take on Watson's Jeopardy appearances
1600+ uniques after Wired tweeted this less than an hour ago (http://twitter.com/#!/wired/status/38030059625390080) and I have made a single sale. The Internet is weird.
ahemphill··on Show HN: my humorous and entrepreneurial take on Watson's Jeopardy appearances
I drew inspiration solely from playing along (and doing well) as I watched last night, thus I didn't really consider the potential "studio participant" outcomes.

I'm sure it might give my product moderately more longevity if Ken or Brad win, but the net benefit would likely be negligible given that there is virtually no investment (nor profit) in the product. The good news, of course, is that the inverse is true as well.

Thanks for the response!

Any and all feedback would be appreciated! In return, please use the coupon code "hackernews" during checkout for $2 off.

(If you'd like a shirt and we share similar circumstances — e.g. you're in San Francisco, or even California — please let me know as I would be happy to accommodate.)

ahemphill··on StartupBus: Is your application applicable?
I was initially psyched on this (and I still like the idea) but it's not viable for me simply because of the very late timing. (The fact that you can't apply without a Facebook account is a little annoying, too.)
ahemphill··on EFF's 21st Birthday Party
I'm sure there will be a ton. I'm considering it.
ahemphill··on Typesetting and paste-up, 1970 style
The completed page is photographed and a plate is made from the negative.
ahemphill··on No Contract: $149 Android phone, $25 unlimited data and 300 min
Bonus: while it does not ship configured to do so by default, the phone can be used as a "mobile hotspot" (tethered) after a simple modification.

I think I'll go pick one up.

ahemphill··on No Contract: $149 Android phone, $25 unlimited data and 300 min
You can buy the device from a third party but they only allow Virgin-branded devices on the network.
ahemphill··on No Contract: $149 Android phone, $25 unlimited data and 300 min
I have a BlackBerry on Virgin and while the device is pretty atrocious, the coverage is great in SF. (The customer service is not quite up to par, however.)
ahemphill··on Looking for a Ride to SXSW? Get on the Startup Bus
I would LOVE one. I'm in SF.
ahemphill··on Reasons Tumblr went down
I created this, and it might be a good time to mention that I'm always looking for new opportunities. I'm a well-rounded front-end developer with a sense of humor. ;)
ahemphill··on Reasons Tumblr went down
Same app, different path. (I couldn't decide on the morning that I whipped this up.)
ahemphill··on Reasons Tumblr went down
As the creator of this site, I agree. It's all intended in good fun.
ahemphill··on Two Startup Guys Looking for a New Roommate in SF
"A few days" might be optimistic but I'm sure HN can help — in fact, we have an extra room if you need a temporary spot. (Jason knows how to get in touch with me.)
ahemphill··on Is my splash page lame?
Cute mascot. I initially didn't see the text because I opened the page in a new tab, so I would definitely make something a little more static unless it's triggered by a user action. (Even then, try to provide a bit more incentive to sign up.)
ahemphill··on Extension for a Cause opens Chrome tabs to help you support charitable efforts
Oops, I failed to link to the *.crx — fixed.
ahemphill··on Chrome for a Cause
A little late and a little funky, but here it is: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2021205
ahemphill··on RequireJS: a JavaScript file and module loader
What makes this different/better than Head JS, LAB, et cetera? If you're familiar with the project, pitch us.
ahemphill··on Chrome for a Cause
I was going to write an extension this weekend. Worth my time?
ahemphill··on Open Web Analytics
I've got Piwik on a shared host (WebFaction tier 1) and while I like the software, I discovered its limit at one point last week with http://reasonstumblrwentdown.com. (The site had about 25k uniques and 250k actions total.)

It eventually recovered but I would definitely do some research and further configuration before running the package on a site with high traffic. One friend at a news site told me that they put Piwik on its own VPS before ditching it for performance issues.

Whatever you decide to do, I would run in parallel a backup system from a proven and trusted provider — I scrambled to do so with Google Analytics once Piwik died.

ahemphill··on Reddit Founder: “I Wish I Still Owned Reddit Now”
Still do. Their office is literally a room in the corner.
ahemphill··on Ask HN: recommendations for domain registrars
I have long preferred http://namecheap.com for the usual TLDs and (somewhat more recently) http://domainsite.com for many ccTLDs. I very recently transferred an important domain from http://joker.com after inadvertently discovering that an account could be accessed from a machine that I had not previously used to log in. (I copied the session ID and I was on the same network but it was enough to convince me to make the switch.)
