adwi··on Daryl Davis Befriends KKK Members and Gets Them to Quit
Stellar audio portrait of him here, told first-person: https://loveandradio.org/2014/02/the-silver-dollar/

Sonically it’s beautifully produced, but a transcript is in the link as well.

adwi··on A Dutch graphic artist reconstructed Tenochtitlan in 3D
Incredible work. Even just aesthetically these images are beautiful.

Perhaps consider selling prints of some of these? Dozens of companies can white-label and turnkey sales and fulfillment from your site (if you’re interested, many of these companies position themselves toward wedding photographers), and I’m sure people would like to support you and your work.

adwi··on T-Mobile switches users to pricier plans
Final straw for me.

Just called and canceled after 15+ years—shockingly, they were loath to actually provide the unlock code to port my number out. Switched to an MVNO on the same network that’s >50% cheaper.

adwi··on Ray and Tom Magliozzi, MIT 1999 Commencement Address [video]
Grew up listening to Car Talk with my dad.

When I was 19 I attended summer school in Cambridge, and right in Harvard Square there was a window on the top of a building painted “Dewey, Cheetum, and Howe”. Fans will recognize this as the name of their fictional lawyers in the credits. I tailgated someone leaving, took the elevator up and knocked on the door.

A middle-aged woman answered, and I gee-golly’ly asked if this was Car Talk. She—Louie “Cronan the Barbarian”—said “Yes!” and invited me in.

She generously showed me around, apologizing that Tom and Ray weren’t in at the moment—my guess was Ray was at the garage, and Tom was exploring the cafe standards of the greater Boston area. She smiled.

On my way out she asked if I liked ice cream and pointed to a Ben and Jerry’s branded freezer right at the entrance. “They just come by and refill this for free, if you ever want some, you’re always welcome to come by, say hi and grab yourself a pint.”

I went back three times that summer. Never did meet Tom (RIP) or Ray, but sure got some good ice cream, and some welcome comfort as an awkward kid in a big new city for the first time.

I still look forward to their twice/weekly reruns.

Sincere question, if you consider those tabloids, which sources do you trust?

The New Yorker, for instance, famously has one of the most intense fact checking operations of any publication. If it’s a matter of your personal politics disagreeing with perceived editorial bias of those, godspeed. But at least the first three you list have a lot more to lose by getting a factual statement wrong than most.

adwi··on TV doctors say annual checkups save lives – real doctors call bullshit (2016)
That’s basically all my annual physical is with my PCP. Short chat, referral for lab work, 2 minute phone call when they get the results.

adwi··on 'Third places': The ways losing our local haunts hurts us (2021)
Highly recommend dog runs for a “third place”.

Generally caring, welcoming are people drawn there and unlike, say, a gym, people have nothing but free time to socialize. The best way I’ve found to make meaningful relationships post-college.

adwi··on Generative AI set to affect 300M jobs across major economies
Classic Pareto improvement: the gains to the winners (society at large) are greater than the losses to the losers (those who held these jobs), so a side payment makes everyone better off. My concern (besides the medium term pain and instability from that churn) is the current state of governance and baked-in inequality, at least in the US, makes an equitable side payment unlikely.
adwi··on San Jose police union executive director charged with smuggling fentanyl into US
There’s a value somewhere in the horrors of untreated addiction getting first-hand visibility. The true cost of policing, prosecuting, and jailing end-users must be enormous, maybe it will rally people to demand those resources get put toward direct outreach to try to address the root causes of the issue. Maybe it’s a feature, not a bug.

I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not, re: “vaccinations don’t prevent or reduce infections”

adwi··on Scientists ‘switch off’ autism symptoms in mice using $3 epilepsy drug
You should do some research on the drug they’re actually citing, Lamictal (lamotragine), if this is the impression you have/share with others.

It in no way is a “downer”, and is often given semi-offlabel interchangeably with standard SSRIs for depression. Also the article quotes $3/pill but is widely available as generic for < $.10/pill.

If this deeply studied—in humans—and readily accessible drug provides an option for those who seek treatment, wonderful.

adwi··on Enhance Speech from Adobe – Free AI filter for cleaning up spoken audio
After seeing this this AM, I just used this in a proper professional mix session for an ad we were finishing today. Sit-down interview shot with an iPhone (don't ask). I output stems of each subject's dialog, uploaded separately, laid back in and mixed little bit of roomtone back into it.

Gobsmack all around. Mine, that it did better in 10 seconds than I think nearly anyone could have done in 10 hours. Theirs, that they thought I performed a literal miracle.

Life comes at you pretty fast sometimes.

adwi··on Cognitive ability is a powerful predictor of political tolerance
> I can’t see how a fetus could be guilty of anything deserving death

Paradoxically the Catholics do (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_sin) I’m sure there’s finicky nuance that the current devout could counter with—apparently they recently decided they were just kidding about limbo being a thing—but that was the mindset drilled into me during my formative years.
