Adam Curtis is great, definitely check out his other work.

adwi··on Snap Smart Glasses
I’ve found it interesting that fashion-forward women I know have begun wearing glasses that look remarkably similar to these. A friend wore a pair this week I would have sworn were chunky smart glasses like these, even containing exaggerated black ornaments that read as front-facing cameras where the stalks met the frames.

I don’t think it’s paranoid to acknowledge that fashion trends come from relatively few designers and editors, whom could relatively easily be motivated to sync up mass aesthetic sensibilities with engineer constraints.

Luxottica has a monopoly on nearly the entire industry, manufacturing (and even directly retailing) nearly every brand of glasses you can name, and they’re both heavily invested in Meta and their own engineering efforts.

adwi··on Heart attacks aren't as fatal as they used to be
Grandfather died of colon cancer at 43.

Went into my PCP at 40 asking for a colonoscopy, he said insurance wouldn’t cover it until I was 50.

I think a lot of institutions and people would love the chance to give them money.
adwi··on U.S. Commercial Real Estate Is Headed Toward a Crisis
There needs to be a large pool of government-backed capital specifically for commercial to residential redevelopment and fast-track zoning approvals for this (somewhere along the line of City of Yes proposal in NYC).

Make it 4-5%, contingent upon (or give additional subsidies for) making significant percentage affordable rentals. Use the cash to cut the centers out of the building to daylight the large floor plates.

Residential rents for much more/ft than commercial so shouldn’t be a problem floating existing commercial mortgages. Maybe there’s even a program to borrow against the future higher stream of income to get non-performing loans current so these banks hold the existing paper instead of taking the write down.

adwi··on Want to spot a deepfake? Look for the stars in their eyes
> The Gini coefficient is normally used to measure how the light in an image of a galaxy is distributed among its pixels. This measurement is made by ordering the pixels that make up the image of a galaxy in ascending order by flux and then comparing the result to what would be expected from a perfectly even flux distribution.

Interesting, I’d only heard of the Gini coefficient as an econometric measure of income inequality.

adwi··on Ask HN: Why are 404 Media posts auto-killed?
Joseph Cox is probably the most important journalist alive breaking stories about the darker sides of technology and its societal impact. He earned a voice here many times over.
adwi··on Tesla Releases Results of 2024 Annual Meeting of Stockholders
That doesn’t mean they’d have ceased to exist.

Likely shareholder equity would be wiped out and they’d reorganize. Isn’t the whole deal that investors get the upsides for taking the risks on the down?

adwi··on Photoshop ToS grants Adobe access to user projects for 'content moderation'
Not one-to-one (node vs layer metaphor) but Fusion is stupid powerful and free within Davinci Resolve.

It’s an incredible piece of software that, in addition to being best in class color correction, has fully replaced Adobe in my professional video workflow (Premiere, AE, AME, etc)

adwi··on How Bad Are Ultraprocessed Foods, Really?
No snark, just a great life tip:

- put unpasteurized milk in a saucepan

- bring it to slow simmer (~180F)

- add a splash of an acid (lemon, white vinegar, etc) and remove from heat

- skim and collect the curd that forms on top.

This is fresh ricotta and it will make you very happy.

adwi··on T-Mobile Completes Acquisition of Mint Mobile
Very happy with US Mobile.

$30/mo unlimited everything, and I average 50gb/mo with tethering. Uses both the Verizon and T-Mobile networks, best of both worlds. And very happy to not be paying $100/mo anymore.

adwi··on Tesla to lay off everyone working on Superchargers, new vehicles
From TFA:

> Tesla is not just laying off Daniel Ho, director of vehicle programs and new product introduction, but also his entire team.

adwi··on It's not what the world needs right now
Not necessarily. Depends on the woman, depends on the man, and often on their reps.

More likely because it was an advertorial, both for the brand and the “models”.

Fun read.

adwi··on Why are bidets just now getting popular in America?
Maybe for an actual porcelain bidet in $5M house. I have at least 10 friends that all rent that have bidets, ranging from a Tushy cold water to high end Toto ones.

You can buy one with all the bells and whistles for < $300 on Amazon. 2 minutes to install. I’ve had to use an extension cord (kept dry, and into GFCI outlet) if there isn’t a convenient outlet for the heated water/seat/dryer ones.

A lot less effort than mounting/unmounting a $300 TV and the quality of life improvement is so great I’m actually willing to talk about how I clean feces off my anus in semi-public.

Do you still smoke? If not, how did you quit?

Quitting is an interesting grey area for cannabis; culturally and functionally people misusing the drug are able to do so indefinitely, usually not reaching the “rock bottom” emergency state that other drugs (hopefully) convince the user to seek treatment. So it feels like “just weed” isn’t serious enough to warrant a 30 day treatment center, but the behavior patterns can be so ingrained it can be hard to see breaking them without.

adwi··on Musk Demands Bigger Stake in Tesla as Price for A.I. Work

adwi··on Aldi: Culture and Operations of a Hard Discounter (2023)
From someone's link above:

> Therefore, if you hear that Aldi and Trader Joe’s are owned by the same group in the United States, you can tell them the truth. While there is a connection between the ownership groups of Theo and Karl Albrecht, they are separate ownership groups that run very different stores that are only connected by the Aldi name.

adwi··on The changing face of post-pandemic New York City
The food, the people, the theater, the music, the buildings, the parks, the museums, the rivers, the beach. The current that’s always pushing you out, which force you to grow or leave. Collectively, “the energy”.

If it’s only an expensive studio apartment that’s keeping one here, I agree, they should save the cash and make room for the rest of us.

adwi··on Apple's chip lab, home to the most 'profound change' in decades
Can any electromagnetic (?) engineers here speak to the difficulties in creating these chips/antennas? Surprising to hear about Apple possibly failing at an engineering project for something that already exists, given their resources and access to talent. If true, could it be difficulty in creating new tech that gets around existing patents? Trying to achieve current results with less power? Unable to compete with the economics of just buying existing tech from competitors?
adwi··on Rolling Stone's negative obituary for Henry Kissinger
This is great context, good find. Loved this line: “If the piece feels like it takes too long to reach its end, well, I'm just marrying form and content.”
