adrow··on 'Dutch reach' rule change to Highway Code welcomed
https://road.cc/content/news/what-dutch-reach-289813

"It is already an offence to open a car door, or cause or permit it to be opened, so as to cause injury, punishable by a maximum fine of £1,000.

It is not a new law and drivers who do not use the Dutch Reach technique will not be fined, unless they commit the aforementioned existing offence."

Anyone know of any other tool like this that might give an idea of where in the sky to look based on your location?

This event was also a plot line in an episode of Foyle's War (Series 5 "All Clear").

We are investigating increased packet loss possibly impacting some AWS Direct Connect customers in the US-EAST-1 Region.

adrow··on Facebook’s Safety Check is a stress-inducing flip of social norms
Two words, "lookalike modelling", or as FB calls it Lookalike Audiences:

https://www.facebook.com/business/help/164749007013531

Arcade Foobar want to draw in new customers, and so generate a lookalike audience based on data they have from existing customers. The modelling algo then compares data points for people who 'look like' their customers, and those people can then be targeted with a high probability that they will also be interested in the same thing.

This is a perfectly plausible explanation that doesn't require FB to be listening to you through your phone mic.

adrow··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it awesome? Please include URL
This seems quite similar to what companies like GumGum are doing as well (in image adverts).

adrow··on My 5.5 Months on Soylent: The Joys of Not Cooking
have you tried /r/soylent? There's loads of discussion there on flavourings.
adrow··on Goat Grazing by Amazon
Early April fools?
adrow··on Amazon to Let Shoppers Bargain for Lower Prices with New “Make an Offer” Option
If they expanded this to general products (and in the UK) this could kill my usage of Flubit. I regularly get 10% or more off Amazon stuff through them, but their delivery is nowhere near as reliable.
adrow··on Couple 'fined' £100 for leaving a bad review
It actually seems to me that they may have copied the idea from that other hotel, the wording is very similar:

From the CNN article:

"Please know that despite the fact that wedding couples love Hudson and our Inn, your friends and families may not,"

Guardian article: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/nov/19/tripadvisor-c...

“Despite the fact that repeat customers and couples love our hotel, your friends and family may not.”

adrow··on Show HN: Kevlar.io – Secrets that when accessed are deleted permanently
You could use it for sending things like passwords. You may want to give someone access to something but not have it stored in chat or email records. If anyone else were to look up the link later, presumably it's no longer there as the recipient already clicked the link.

I think that's actually something worth clarifying about this service. Assuming that a link is created with a secret, but not accessed, how long is it stored for? Is it ever deleted otherwise?

adrow··on Show HN: Hitch – Uber meets Public Transit
Also reminds me of Halting State by Charlie Stross. The buses in that book have an auction system where people bid against each other for it to go to their stop next.
adrow··on Moves joins Facebook
Any decent Android alternatives? I only installed Moves this morning as well!
adrow··on UX frustration while driving a car and using Google Maps
Perhaps some of the frustration could stem from "...holding my phone in one hand while steering and shifting gears with my other. I'm also late..."?

Seems unbelievably reckless and dangerous to me, certainly here in the UK he'd be looking at 3 points at a minimum and worst case a prosecution for careless or dangerous driving.

adrow··on Conquering the Command Line - Free eBook
The main difference for me would be that I'd consider an eBook to be something I can download (epub, mobi, pdf etc...) and read on my Kobo offline. Can't see how I could easily do that with the online HTML version.

As a comparison, I found this on Skimfeed today:

http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/guide-to-kde-the-other-linux-...

adrow··on Conquering the Command Line - Free eBook
I would say that reading for free online is different from offering a free eBook as the title indicates. 'Free online HTML book' would seem like a better description to me if that's the case.
adrow··on Ask HN: Is it possible to get a tech job without a degree?
I got a graduate position earlier this year in an ad-tech company, coming from 10 years in a completely unrelated industry and without a degree (I'm 33 and in the UK).

I worked through some Codecademy courses, developed my own site and blog and got to grips with things like Ad-Sense to get a feel for the ad-tech side of things. I pushed my self-taught achievements and motivation in my CV as well as my 10 years prior in a stable corporate environment.

I had to take a pay cut to get my foot in the door, but within 6 months I was picked for another team and was back up to my old salary. I'm now in tech support, but not IT specific (it's more APIs, datafeeds, SQL and site debugging). I get plenty of exposure to the underlying company tech and there are a lot of avenues for advancement in the future so I'm really happy I made the career jump.

adrow··on Google Shopping: Upload Your Content Without Watermarks or Be Banned
It doesn't have to be most people, with the traffic levels that Google probably deal with, even a small percentage doing that could add up to a lot of 'lost' click revenue.
adrow··on Google Shopping: Upload Your Content Without Watermarks or Be Banned
I think the reasoning would be that by putting your URL in the image, you are potentially encouraging people to enter it manually instead of clicking Google Shopping's link to the product.
adrow··on North Korea 2013 – A travel journal
I'm always fascinated by images from NK, bit of a shame in this case that the captions are plastered in the middle of them.
adrow··on Shopify Merchants Can Now Accept Bitcoin
So if someone is running conversion tracking at checkout for analytics etc... what currency gets reported? The post says:

"You can choose to receive your payments in Bitcoins (paid into your Bitcoin wallet) or paid in your local currency directly into your bank account every business day."

If your shop currency is set to GBP but someone pays in BTC, what gets populated if using {{ shop.currency }} and {{ total_price }} for example?

adrow··on The $179 Moto G hits the US early
I unplugged my N5 this morning at around 07.00, it's now 16.30 and I'm on 80%. Did some web browsing on the train into work, have been messaging on and off all day. Lowest I've seen on a weekday for me was about 40% by the time I go to sleep.

Admittedly I tried some games on Sunday (Real Racing 3 and PvZ2) and the battery drained much faster, but the same happens on my ipad mini so it wasn't unexpected.

adrow··on [dead]
Am I missing something here? The author seems to be relying on an assumption rather than just Googling the same terms to see if any ads are shown. I tried that and didn't get a single ad either.
adrow··on Show HN: My embarrassingly simple printscreen weekend webapp
I think you could be clearer that 'Save' uploads the screenshot to your site, and does not (as I assumed) open a Save-as prompt.

adrow··on Send Self Destructing E-mails
Didn't work with an email to my Fastmail account.
adrow··on New Delicious
Agreed, I have no motivation to create a new account just to see what they've done with it now. I used Delicious for many years, but they just seemed to completely lose direction. All I wanted was a simple bookmarking tool and Pinboard is perfect in that respect.
adrow··on LoseProof: anonymously links you and your stuff
What advantages would you say this has over the UK Police-approved Immobilise site, which is free?

https://www.immobilise.com/view.php

It looks like LoseProof relies on the goodwill of the person finding your stuff, in which case surely it's down to whether they'd rather fill in your form or hand it in to the Police.
