Time Machine is the solution: everyone gets it (at least the normal people I introduced it to).

By any means: use the visibility you gain from this for your PR/advertising game! Now is the time for a smart play, get the public behind you (in terms of: target audience goes Plurk 'cause it's cool). Granted, this is not 'the solution but an opportunity you can manage to get a win out of this. (Remember, PG wrote the $$ he spent on PR was worth it.)

1. I agree with all your points.

2nd, as someone who makes his dough with writing copy, let me tell you this: the really good writers do use those tricks of the trade without you noticing it. It is similiar to good typography: it doesn't get into the way.

You may want to check out the writings of Gary Halbert or John Carlton to see it in action.

My guess is the average non-geek does not think his emails stay private, but they do not think about it at all. Email is something like a hydrant, it's just there, so what?

Videos are value-add when the presentation is well done (in terms of 'stagecraft and being able to see the slides). Merely listening endless ramble designed to keep you on the hook looses against speed-reading the transcript.

Bad usability not only sucks in a "this sucks, but let suck it up anyway" way, bad usability sucks in a big way, like "this sucks!". It's only bad culture that lets you esteem otherwise.

And since when providing 'fadware (for lack of a better term) is an inherently bad thing? People are having fun with theire device, for a couple of bucks. Are we geeks critisizing anyone for /that/? C'om on.
access_denied··on When and how to micromanage
I got a similiar impression from watching a few Carsonified vids, off course one has to be careful with judging too fast. I wonder why Joel wrote the articel that way? He s basically saying in public: Ryan screwed it up but I could wing it because I memorised my speech.
access_denied··on When and how to micromanage
The author tells how he stepped in using the "5 whys?" method. I recall reading that Jeff Bezos used to do the same thing at some point.

To make sure we upvote it because its from Joel.

Sorting dir listings by ASCII (or how this is called) big Names befor lowercas names; that would be a useful feature for me at least. I don't know how much I would trust an app to essentially taking over my system though.

My people (the Germans) have this reputation for being impolite. I tend to think this is because we have the tendecy to be brutally direct when we want to be honest. We like to be honest, in that sense anyway, regarding matters of work. This comes off as rude to members of the civilized world (say, the British or Japanese). (I am writing this after +6 years of experience living in foreign countries.)

Another observation: the heroism around doing ones work is strong in Germany, we have that in common with the Americans (in the West, don't ask certain Asians). Yes, certainly there are many French (for instance) fellows, who like theire work. But the Germans (and Americans) have that tendency to get "macho" about it.

The best way to disagree is already possible: reply to a comment by stating your opinion. Off course that can have negative effects on signal/noise ratio (or not?).

I disagree. There is a contract. What is written in it? That counts. (I am not saying bad customer service is smart business.)
