ab8··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
H1-Bs are usually paid MORE, not less, because of wage parity laws that have existed for DECADES. The application process has a 6 month delay just to determine the minimum wage that the government forces employers to pay.
ab8··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Why would you want to work for a scamming company?
ab8··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Yes, they are. Immigrant visa = green card. Dual intent just means you are allowed to apply for a green card.
ab8··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
That is reference to people who have applied for asylum after having come in on a tourist visa. Technically their status is legal, because they have a pending application. This is an attempt to make their status illegal, so they can be deported.

Its only racism when you then go and invite white south africans in. And make statements like "Why cant we have more people come in from countries like Norway"
ab8··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Thanks for the info. But the WSJ article is taking about green card appointments, not H1-Bs.
ab8··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
(a) The WSJ article is talking about "immigrant visas" a.k.a. green cards, not H1-Bs.

(b) Even if we are talking about H1-Bs, it takes someone in India 10-15 years of waiting in line to get a green card. If someone were to buy a house in the interim, it doesn't seem so irrational to me.

Its easy to blame the victim and say they should have known.

I wonder where Indian incompetence/lying falls on the Elon scale.
ab8··on Did we lose our way in making efficient software?
It is interesting to see most people lay the blame at the feet of developers.

The reality is that these are all business decisions:

1) Move to the cloud because the business likes the steady payout of subscriptions. Business customers love not having to hire IT teams and demand six 9s of uptime because it is someone else’s responsibility. But performance needs to just be acceptable to end users.

2) Customers refusing to upgrade on-premises software, that led to long maintenance cycles and endless patches

3) Developing once for the web vs. Multiple times for different platforms – each needing its own developers and testers.

No amount of expertise on the part of developers is going to address these fundamental forces.

ab8··on You are what you read, even if you don't always remember it
Right! You are your body. Not just your mind.
ab8··on H-1B visa fraud alive and well amid anti-abuse efforts
Why do they all keep saying H1-B workers are underpaid? The government determines minimum pay for each application. My experience has been that this number is quite high.

At least they are not asking you to punch holes into cards
ab8··on Open source hospital price database
This is true only until insurance decides not to pay arbitrarily. In my case I was stuck with a $112k bill. Hospital offered 50% self pay discount. Now what?

ab8··on Is remote work bad for the economy?
Middle managers will be needed more, not less.

ab8··on Average new car transaction price hits a record $48,043
Used cars are so expensive that it makes sense to spend a bit more and buy new.
ab8··on Ask HN: Do you think Agile/Scrum is beneficial for software delivery?
It is a mistake to adopt any agile process when the management does not have what they call the agile mindset. Both the words "downwards" and "micromanagement" are already warning signs that the company will do better with a different process.
ab8··on Ask HN: Do you think Agile/Scrum is beneficial for software delivery?
Daily stand-ups and scrum events work very well when used as a self organizing tool for the scrum team. Micromanagers are not invited. And neither are managers. (I am saying this as a manager myself.) This is what causes the process to breakdown.

ab8··on Your Computer Isn't Yours
I dont believe people have many complaints when it comes to the usability of Apple hardware. Touchbar excluded of course. And that keyboard.

LOL. Right
ab8··on Your Computer Isn't Yours
It is a luxury brand in the US. Every tech person that has made it would never buy anything but Apple. Yes, things like battery life are great. But if you are seen working at a coffee shop, there is a 100% guarantee of a that glowing apple logo on your laptop.
ab8··on Your Computer Isn't Yours
Well said. The hacker culture is not immune to the trappings of luxury brands. You can’t show off your wealth using a no name brand running Linux.
