Explorer is not good, and finder isn't much better.
aardshark··on Show HN: I built a word game. My mom thinks it's great. What do you think?
Nah, it's very annoying to be country-centric. The NYT game clues are just so fucking American sometimes and it's very irritating. It's difficult to avoid this altogether of course, but staying away from sports and politics helps a good bit.
aardshark··on Fixing left and mutual recursions in grammars
draw.io can do similar diagramming. You can generate diagrams programmatically through their CSV format.

Unfortunately documentation for using it programmatically is a bit lacking, but you can for example host a CSV somewhere and use their editor to load it. It's all client side so will automatically update.

aardshark··on Personal Names Around the World (2011)
As short as zero characters? Not the full name, surely.
aardshark··on Bypassing airport security via SQL injection
Yes, welcome to the rest of the world.
aardshark··on Fixing a bug in Google Chrome as a first-time contributor
There is an annoying bug in Chrome DevTools that people who want to impede debugging of their JS files exploit. I think it's probably related to making the regex engine use excess memory and crashing the tab.

Anyway, just mentioning it to see if someone here knows if it's a well known and difficult to fix bug, or if it's just a bit obscure to have had any fixes for.

aardshark··on Troubleshooting: Terminal Lag
300ms for startup still sounds slow to me. Not ridiculously so, but it won't give that snappy feeling.

aardshark··on Feds want to ban the Flipper Zero – Experts say it's a scapegoat
That's just because you're used to a US-centric view of the internet from all the other Americans who perpetuate the silliness.
aardshark··on Push notifications – What to push, what not to push, and how often
Buzzkill can do this on Android.
aardshark··on Chrome's next weapon in the War on Ad Blockers: Slower extension updates
You must be able to turn this off, because I've been running many homebrewed extensions for years and never encountered these popups.
aardshark··on Some reasons to avoid Cython
Open up Chat GPT, paste your functions and ask it to convert them to rust. Go through them 1 by 1, see if you understand and ask questions about anything you don't recognise. Don't expect the output to be perfectly logically correct, you will have to ensure that yourself.

I've found Chat GPT to be really excellent for quickly getting myself up to speed with languages that I'm not familiar with.

aardshark··on The trouble with supermarket self checkouts
Self checkouts like the author mentioned, which have the "unexpected item in bagging area" component, are awful. Plus the machines are usually laggy.

When the machines are responsive and there's no irritating behaviours of the machine, then they're just fine, or even better than a cashier.

aardshark··on The Pentagon and CIA have shaped thousands of movies into effective propaganda
Do you live in a first world Western country and is your social circle comprised of people who do the same? In my experience when you go outside of that circle you start finding people who have personally experienced loss from COVID very quickly.
aardshark··on Your computer should say what you tell it to say
What does your banking experience look like if losing online banking is a minor inconvenience to you?

For me it would be as if my bank ceased to exist.

aardshark··on Larne Craigyhill bonfire: 17000 pallets (2021)
17000 pallets are worth much more than £20,000, which apparently covers all the associated cost of the bonfire.

They sure didn't buy all those pallets.

aardshark··on Ring is having a major outage
I doubt they actually do much anyway.
aardshark··on Pix surpasses credit and debit card transactions in Brazil
That seems monumentally stupid.
aardshark··on Internet search tips
But search techniques change over time. You can see that in the responses in this thread. What used to work doesn't anymore.

I think when you come across situations that only grid can solve, then you appreciate it a bit more.

Flexbox complements grid imo, it's not an alternative.

aardshark··on Solve your big problems by solving your real problem
So if their net worth only goes up for the rest of their lives, you would consider them to have successfully invested, rather than gambled?

Seems to me your definition is a bit lacking.

aardshark··on FastAPI 0.100.0 release notes
Not to be excessively negative, but this really means very little without more context. Maybe it was very slow before, or it's a particulary unused scenario. I'm always skeptical when people write such praises of their own software without giving a comparison point.
aardshark··on OpenLLM
Here's just one issue:

They stem words aggressively, so searching for "repeater", which is a less common, specific term, gives you results including "repeat", a commonly used word. And there's no way to do an exact word search.

Every field is quoted. Every field is quote-escaped. That's all you need.

Have you tried using a black (or any colour) tshirt? It solves your first two issues at least.
aardshark··on NIH blocks access to genetics database if research enters “forbidden” territory
Aren't these proportions of the voting population, not the actual population?

Seems like a bit of a jump to assume they're distributed the same way and start making conclusions based on that.

aardshark··on Google’s “million’s of search results” are not being served
> I can't even tell what this blog post is complaining about, it seems so badly organized and written.

That's because it's an ad for the service, not a real blog post.

aardshark··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
I hate the aesthetic of your webpage. Don't change my cursor. It's incredibly distracting. The text is way too large and makes scrolling a pain. It's an extremely irritating page. Also your Contact page directs to nowhere on your About page.

Maybe it's a deliberate decision to filter only for people who are really interested in a keyboard like this, but I wouldn't buy a product from someone who has made the website design choices that you have.
