_chu1··on NINA: Rebuilding the original AIM, AOL Desktop, Yahoo and ICQ platforms
These guys are reverse engineering Skype now too. Really cool stuff.

_chu1··on Dumb TVs deserve a comeback
I only purchase Sony TVs, and I simply just connect an HTPC to them. If there are any smart features, I just choose not to accept the EULA and not to connect it to the Internet.
_chu1··on US lawmakers tell Apple, Google to be ready to remove TikTok from stores Jan. 19
This is excellent news!
_chu1··on Most iPhone owners see little to no value in Apple Intelligence so far
The Writing Tools are a gimmick, but the improvements to Siri on the iPhone 16 are great. I haven't used the visual intelligence yet, but I always thought Google Lens was cool, so I hope it works just as well. Image Playground and Genmoji are pretty stupid, I have no idea why they wasted time on that.

Message/email summaries are super weird. They show up when they want to, which is barely at all.

Say what you want about this Apple Intelligence stuff, but it's nowhere near as intrusive or annoying as Gemini or Copilot. You can turn it off and ignore it.

_chu1··on Apple put the Magic Mouse's charging port on the bottom again
Call me old fashioned but I'm fine with a few AAA batteries.
_chu1··on New iMac with M4
When I think cheap and works out of the box, Mac is the last thing on my mind.
_chu1··on Honeybee: Calling via XMPP
It pretty much is. You will find that barely anyone actively uses XMPP, let alone anyone you know.
_chu1··on How to escape Honda's privacy hell
Plus them watching people through their cameras.

_chu1··on Flock Safety is the biggest player in a city-by-city scramble for surveillance
Yes.
_chu1··on Flock Safety is the biggest player in a city-by-city scramble for surveillance
Why is this legal? Who allows this? What do we do?
_chu1··on [dead]
Dumbest shit I've read today. Nice job!
_chu1··on US House passes bill to ban TikTok if owners won't divest
No, it hasn't. Never seen anything relatively nice from a Chinese company, even when it's another one of their piles of manure with a different name like OnePlus.
_chu1··on Zoho is attracting the attention of African startup founders
I'm completely OK with American brands making Americans their primary target again.
_chu1··on California Program to Expand Zero-Down, Interest-Free Home Loan to Undocumented
Clearly they have been just letting homelessness be an issue if they're able to pull all this as of recently to freely house random people for political brownie points.
_chu1··on A data-driven case for why TikTok needs to be banned before the 2024 election
Anything that uses slot machine styled reward mechanisms should be outlawed with our consumer protection laws. I support a TikTok ban only due to national security concerns, but that's not to say I believe American social media monoliths are doing anything right in the slightest either yet not to say they should be banned either. I made a post on a different thread about a month ago dissecting specific issues with my generation (Gen Z) and social media where I touch on different areas (I should really make a blog).

Side note : I'm quite interested, is TikTok as popular with Gen Z in Europe as it is in America?

_chu1··on Bob_cassette_rewinder
I live in central Alabama. Would take over 4 hours to walk or bike to get groceries. Not everyone lives in a huge city and the ones in Alabama are too dangerous to walk around in without concealed carrying a firearm (except for Huntsville).
_chu1··on Bob_cassette_rewinder
We keep reusable bags in the car for every time we go to the grocery store. I think the entire country would only benefit from banning single-use plastic bags nationally, and I'm not sure how you could have an issue with that.
_chu1··on Apple terminates Epic Games developer account, calling it a 'threat' to iOS
I use a Pixel 5a with CalyxOS and do not have a Google account.
_chu1··on Apple terminates Epic Games developer account, calling it a 'threat' to iOS
If you buy technology that treats you like a product and has a rape mentality because it's popular and easy, you don't deserve technology.
_chu1··on PFAS 'forever chemicals' to officially be removed from food packaging, FDA says
How did it even get in there in the first place?
_chu1··on What Is WebTV?
WebTV actually had a really neat sound system. They were one of the first clients of Headspace Inc (later Beatnik) which was started by Thomas Dolby because he felt there was a lack of tools to create interactive computer audio. Before WebTV they worked on the soundtrack

Headspace created the RMF file format, conceptually a mix between an SMF and a tracker song (XM, S3M) featuring compressed or low bitrate integrated patches, which was later used as the ringtone format for almost every flip/feature phone in the 2000s (notable examples include the T-Mobile Sidekick/Danger Hiptop and most by Nokia).

_chu1··on What Is WebTV?
Did you have anything to do with the track "as-dream"? That's my absolute favorite, it's a 20-something minute long ambient track.
_chu1··on Film Companies Seek 'Torrenting History' Related to Redditor
Who is allowing "filmmakers" to send a death squad after someone and try to request information they'll never get access to over not even actually pirating something but just talking about it?
_chu1··on You are not late (2014)
I'm 16 and I want to grow up and revive the concept of a fixed-function graphics card to make graphics cards cheaper and more focused on gaming. I might even look into acquiring the 3dfx brand and reviving it with that goal. AI and crypto whatever might be the buzzwords but they don't interest me.
_chu1··on Inside Windows Product Activation (2001)
I activated Office XP on Windows 98 over the phone a while ago on my Pentium III machine.
_chu1··on Inside Windows Product Activation (2001)
The average user probably isn't reinstalling their OS anyways. They don't even really have to rely on this method anymore because I was born in 2008 and grew up with Windows. It actually kind of blew my mind when I realized all *nixes were case sensitive and that they didn't have the dir and cd commands by default, all I knew was how Windows did things and I'm still pretty used to it, as much as I wish I could trust it more but I've tried to lock down my main version (LTSC IoT 2021) as much as possible from MS data collection.
_chu1··on Inside Windows Product Activation (2001)
Windows 7 did actually restrict you from logging in at a certain point, I don't exactly remember when but you had to ignore activation for a good bit.
_chu1··on Gibellina, known as "Sicily’s Marfa", is looking for a revival
No matter what you think about the vaccine, the WEF is something straight out of Deus Ex.
_chu1··on Ethernet: The Basics
