VSCode’s Jupyter Notebooks is slightly different from Hydrogen in that it’s basically a MarkDown document with executable code blocks (cells) in the text editor that show their output in the text editor.

Again, not exactly the same as Hydrogen but there’s definitely some overlap in use cases and VSCode’s Jupyter Notebooks is pretty good. You should give it a shot and see if it’s a viable replacement for what you were using Hydrogen for.

This showcases the UI a bit if I’m not being clear: https://code.visualstudio.com/learn/educators/notebooks

What’s preventing this from being done in VSCode? Other than it hasn’t yet?

I don’t think it ticks every box for you, but have you tried Jupyter Notebooks in VSCode[0]?

__ryan__··on Tell HN: macOS Ventura broke the Raspberry Pi Pico ecosystem

  Are there any workarounds?

  There are at least two workarounds to the problem. But essentially, they both do the same thing: take the macOS Finder out of the picture, and copy the UF2 to the virtual volume without involving those pesky extended attributes and additional resource forks.
__ryan__··on Apple announces ‘upgrade’ to App Store pricing, adding 700 new price points
Not even close. They semi-arbitrarily came up with prices they allow in the App Store, probably “justifying” it using some metrics, or your app will be rejected.

Tax write off and SEO back-linking. Also, “donate to us and be put on a list of organizations that have donated to us” has been commonplace since the advent of donations. This whole thread and the links shared within are shockingly cynical and searching desperately for a conspiracy.
__ryan__··on Mathics: A free, open-source alternative to Mathematica
Is a pen not an alternative to a pencil? Different features and tradeoffs; it depends on preference and context. If anything it’s less of an alternative if there’s no differences, otherwise it would be byte-for-byte Mathematica and you’d be unable to choose between the two.

__ryan__··on Starlink to start “deprioritizing” traffic after 1TB monthly
“How quickly the advertised-as-unlimited internet service he paid for owes him unlimited internet service he knew was deprioritized only 10 seconds ago.”

Let’s be real, they’re simply making a case that 1TB/mo is far from abuse as far as an unlimited, capless internet service should be concerned.

Did these starlink customers agree to a contract saying this could happen? Probably. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s a pretty low threshold* when compared to unlimited.

*edited from cap

__ryan__··on Mathics: A free, open-source alternative to Mathematica
Compared to what? What about the docker image? It’s effectively a development environment for math, and it’s seemingly robust. It doesn’t seem particularly wasteful in its use of dependencies specifically has the goal of interfacing with other open source tools. Rolling their own X for everything rather than using the de-facto third party libraries seems like a fine, manageable choice to me.

__ryan__··on Overzealous Destructuring
Ah, I see. Yeah, you would have to bind the argument to a name then destructure it separately:

  let foo = (bar) => {
    let {a, b, c} = bar
    return [bar, a, b, c]
  }

    foo({ a: 1, b: 2, c: 3 }) // => [ { a: 1, b: 2, c: 3 }, 1, 2, 3 ]
Though JavaScript object keys are strictly strings and symbols, you can destructure dynamic keys like so:

  let foo = (bar) => {
    let {[1]: a, [2]: b} = bar
    return [bar, a, b]
  }

  foo({ 1: "hi", 2: "world", 3: "!" }) // => [ { '1': 'hi', , '2': 'world', '3': '!' }, 'hi' 'world' ]
__ryan__··on Overzealous Destructuring
I’m not super familiar with Clojure, but I tried to read through the link you shared. I certainly could be missing something, what can Clojure’s destructuring do that JavaScript cannot?
__ryan__··on macOS is background scanning and following downloaded QR codes?
The original tweets explained it. The user agent is impersonating a shared Facebook/Twitter/etc link preview/thumbnail. Many sites respond with markup more appropriate for a thumbnail when using that user agent, and if not, it’s unlikely that they serve anything worse, so it’s little harm done.

__ryan__··on Lua, a Misunderstood Language (2021)
You created an unfair definition of the array indexing operator. I can just as easily say that the array indexing operator gives you access to the element at index I, which starts counting at 0. That's not an argument.
__ryan__··on The Reason Java Is Still Popular
I don't think that's true. In JS:

  /^[^@\s]+@\S+$/.test("john.\"@\".doe@valid.example") == true
Edit: Hmm, I see what you mean. At first glance I thought it was just checking that it didn't start with @ or whitespace.
__ryan__··on The Reason Java Is Still Popular
First of all, yes, new features alone can make something maintain popularity. Why would that not be the case?

Second, the author was using that as an example of Java showing a pattern of adding syntax improvements, which again might be something that maintains popularity.

Finally, from the article:

  But let's talk about the Java we have today, not the one coming in 6 months.
It was just one talking point. Did you even read the article?
__ryan__··on The Reason Java Is Still Popular

  Check that its a string containing '@' with at least one character before and after the @ symbol is usually the only sensible thing to do.
This is exactly what the regex in the example is doing.
__ryan__··on The Reason Java Is Still Popular
You are thinking of string interpolation. The idea behind string templates, the feature the example is showcasing, is effectively a way to define a function that can be called with similar syntax to string interpolation.

So DB."SELECT * FROM Person p WHERE p.last_name = \{name}" would basically be a function call like DB("SELECT * FROM Person p WHERE p.last_name = ", name), which would do the right thing to parameterize the SQL.

__ryan__··on Tell HN: Godaddy canceled my domain, gave me 2h to respond, then charged €150
I don’t love GoDaddy, but I recently had a payment issue like OP and they notified me several times in the month leading up to my domain entering the grace period. I didn’t see and/or ignored those emails until my domain entered the grace period (and my domain stopped working) so I had to contact customer support. I didn’t have a penalty for renewing while in the grace period (.com in the US), but the support agent was fast and helpful. It was totally on me.

Of course, these emails may not have been delivered to OP for one reason or another. If that’s truly the case, it could be a technical error on GoDaddy’s side, or a filtering/mail issue on OPs side.

__ryan__··on “Hello world” is slower in C++ than in C (Linux)
From the article:

> I do not believe that printing ‘hello world’ itself should be slower or faster in C++, at least not significantly. What we are testing by running these programs is the overhead due to the choice of programming language.
