Woeps··on Bots, so many bots
The issue is that it another system that puts the "blame" and/or work people instead of dealing with the root cause. So in that case nothing changes.

Because I wonder how are people going to do volunteering hours, get it recognized trough red tape/bureaucracy if they're already struggling to survive.

Woeps··on Apple must pay 13B euros in back taxes, EU's top court rules
Regarding the Netherlands, It looked like they where working and making good progress of dismantling this system. But in the end it was all a façade and feet dragging... Now I just hope that with our current government it wont get worse.

But hey, we voted for these muppets. So if the EU again fines us we deserve it.

Woeps··on Apple must pay 13B euros in back taxes, EU's top court rules
No, the EU checks if the tax systems are fair and held to certain standards. In this case this special deal was only available to a select few companies.
Woeps··on State of S3 – Your Laptop is no Laptop anymore – a personal Rant
Reading your other comments I see where you're getting from. And if you're indeed adding phones and tables Apple and MS are both at a ~20% (android has an overwhelming +50% by the way) from the same sources I looked at before.

If you just look at "desktop/laptop" Windows still reigns supreme.

Now the question is could be: should you include those for this discussion or not?

Yes because lots of people use them. No because the conversation was about laptops.

regardless, I now understand your point

Woeps··on State of S3 – Your Laptop is no Laptop anymore – a personal Rant
2, I shutdown my personal laptop because I don't care having a blankslate when booting up.

But regarding the work laptop, Sometimes it's nice to have stuff ready when you're oncall. I have my applications/windows pre-prepared so that I don't have to go trough a thousands hoops in the middle of the night to resolved that priority 1 incident.

I understand your point, but I also can see what's the fuzz about. If the fuzz is legit is not for me to say.

Woeps··on State of S3 – Your Laptop is no Laptop anymore – a personal Rant
Might I ask where you get these numbers from?

I don't like using Windows, and I would like them to be a smaller player. But if I search for "desktop" operating systems share world wide I get numbers that are way way different.

some show that Windows is around 70%.

Woeps··on Ask HN: How do you deal with an off-day?
Small documentation work, research, cleaning up my desk and of computer files/inbox.

Just do small stuff that normally fall trough the cracks. It's also during these days that my brain comes up with solutions I can then implement during more productive days

Woeps··on Lidl's Cloud Gambit: Europe's Shift to Sovereign Computing
Regarding the tech aspect? no. But legally it's always has been challenging. And that's where the difference lies

Unrelated, I think this also happens the other way around.

Woeps··on Mapping Hacker News to find who knows what in the HN community
At least you have some expertise... Mine comes up blank...
Woeps··on Show HN: Every mountain, building and tree shadow mapped for any date and time
Plus it seems to be missing a boat load of trees in the streets.

But it's pretty cool overall! And I'll keep it in mind as we're in the process of looking for a new home.

Woeps··on I Miss BSD/Linux
It's the same reason why I never buy the latest hardware but always something that came out a year-ish before.

Eventough I had issues with Windows not finding any drivers on my Lenovo. While OpenSuse had no problems at all ... which was a nice surprise for a change.

Woeps··on Amber: Programming language compiled to Bash
What does this have to do with their comment? The poster was giving feedback about a concern (maybe not a concern but something that they noticed).
Woeps··on Sony is erasing digital libraries that were supposed to be accessible "forever"
I wonder how this will go down, it's not the first time Sony has removed something that was advertised/a selling point and was challenged in court for it. See the case about the PS3 being able to run Linux.

I as a layman see this basically as the same thing so I assume we'll get a similar result (and I'm probably wrong about this)

Woeps··on "Niksen": The art of doing nothing
Would say that dolce far niente is just nietsen/niksen but dressed up a bit sweetly ;)
Woeps··on Taylor Swift threatens to sue student who tracks her private jet
sue a student... but they're not the only one using/showing this data ...

If they would really care they should lobby to make their (or all?) flight data private. (which I find understandable)

Woeps··on Not even Notepad is safe from Microsoft's big AI push in Windows
truth be told, to have tabs and auto restore not a feature that I personaly dislike.

But for the rest.... it's fluff that's not needed for notepad. Now watch it get to much development and ultimately killed/scrapped.

Woeps··on Tiny Code Christmas
ooh this looks excellent fun, thanks for posting!
Woeps··on Ask HN: How do you tell if something has a keylogger implemented
wait, I'm lost.

So lets say we have a software, and your account can tell you when somebody else sees your info in this piece of software?

How would this work? And what does this have to do with keylogging? Genuinely asking as I'm just trying to understand what link I'm missing

Woeps··on Show HN: An app store just for installable web apps
But outside of messaging, music and browsing the web. how many native apps do you/people actually use?

Because I'm personally under the impression that this is what most people use their phone for (maybe play a game or two as well). tough this might also depend on the countries where I lived (and when).

And some people also take pictures of course

Woeps··on Booking.com makes a fortune – so why is it leaving its bills to hotels unpaid?
Tough in (western) Europe they seem to have an strangle hold on almost all hotels. Sure AirBnB is there as well but they're not really usable (in my opinion) regarding hotel room. And Google maps often just brings you back to an Booking.com page
Woeps··on What is your “Orange Juice Test” question?
"Pulp isn't juice"

True, but a juice can contain pulp, and that's what they're asking. You want the juice with or without pulp.

Woeps··on LTS kernels are no longer supported for 6 years because no one used them
1, This has nothing to do with people of all walks of life working together

2, Hermaphrodite & Intersex have been around for a looooooooong time. as I assume you mean sex (languages changes, gender these days doesn't mean physical/biological sex anymore)

3, your nick is pretty relevant in this case.

Of course I'm open to debate point 2, as I can surely be wrong. but it still has nothing to do with this conversation ;)

Woeps··on LTS kernels are no longer supported for 6 years because no one used them
Open source has always been about people from all walks of life coming and working together.

We just never called it woke back in the 1990/2000's ;)

Woeps··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals

Wait what? but that's what community and laws are all about.

Woeps··on Show HN: Learn a language quickly by practising speaking with AI

Woeps··on Show HN: Learn a language quickly by practising speaking with AI
Everybody seems to be raving about this app but I'm running into one big issue.

Everytime I try to speak the system states I spoke the following: Subtitles created by the Amara.org community

sooooooo, guess this just doesn't work for me.

Woeps··on Steam on Linux Usage Spikes to Nearly 2% in July, More Than Apple macOS
This is the way!,

Tough I personally stopped dual booting with Windows due to their updates policy.

Sometimes I would not boot into it for months and then unskippable (or I forgot to skips them) updates would ruin that one hour of gaming I might have available...
