Woeps··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
> Because Putin isn't a Nazi. He's something new.

Huh... you know, I never tought about it like that. But I don't disagree with with this statement. thanks

Woeps··on UK bans daytime TV ads for cereals, muffins and burgers
Uhm... the country we're talking about is the UK. Not some US state...
Woeps··on Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
> This equation is just wrong, as applies to both Putin and Orbán

Why is this wrong?

Woeps··on Can Europe build its first trillion-dollar startup?
"It ended up with Americans having the highest purchasing power in the world"

Uhm, https://www.numbeo.com/ has the US as fifth highest in 2024-mid year and fourth in 2024 overall...

Woeps··on Can Europe build its first trillion-dollar startup?
Voila! I completely agree. Also as in my non-expert opinion, this way multiple countries within the EU/Europe (the Brits and Swiss can have a share as well) could benefit.

But then again I'm non expert. I do how ever know that the last time we had such's a wealthy companies in the 1600's it didn't do humanity lots of good ;)

Woeps··on In Praise of Print: Reading Is Essential in an Era of Epistemological Collapse
This, also writing on the page for notes or underlining for curiosities are for me just easier to do in a paper book then on a e-reader.

But that's just me being stuck in my ways. So and I see the use of digital versions as well. Specially as a lot of my technical books now often coming with a digital copy! It's best of both worlds.

Woeps··on 'PDF to Brainrot' study tools are an iteration on a TikTok trend
Oh no indeed.

And my first reaction was:"Naaaaaah ... This can't be a thing people actually use right?"

But I haven't been a student in decades so what do I know.

Woeps··on Is Chrome the New IE? (2023)
Good, that's allowed :)
Woeps··on I Didn't Need Kubernetes, and You Probably Don't Either
I don't mind K8s, and it can be usefull if you just stay to the core essentials. But I do agree that there seems to be the sentiment:"Everybody has to like it!"

And I mostly think that this is because our collective bias for everything Big Tech does is good. While often it just depends. Just because Google does X or Y doesn't mean it will work for everybody else.

Woeps··on GenChess
That is focused on protecting costumers (mostly their own).

There I fixed it for you ;)

Edit: okay okay, I get it... Consumer protection bad, Big Tech good!

Woeps··on How the Ivy League Broke America
It's the same here in the Netherlands, I didn't go to a elite school but I am from a place where most people do. And it's just bonkers to me this rat-race that they have been placed in because that's the only way to "happiness"/success ...

Also question, is consulting considered an elite job? My impression is that even consulting for the big 4* is nothing special.

* are they they same everywhere? : Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC

Woeps··on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)
My mother cycled from NL -> -> BE -> FR -> UK Stone henge and back again. Never again she said. It's a lovely country but the cycling infrastructure was ... questionable to say the least (according to her).

Which I found surprising, as their hiking trails are awesome and very well kept! For example I loved hiking on the Jurasic Coast and Cornwall. (Even signed up a for a National Trust memberships)

Woeps··on How good are American roads?
What? passing on the right in Germany? As far I can search (and recall) it's prohibited except on multilane roads (including the Autobahn) when traffic in the left lane is stopped or is moving at less than 60 km/h
Woeps··on How good are American roads?
When I'm driving trough Germany I always encounter at least one worker van going the speed of light and flashing the <insert sport car> for going to slow.
Woeps··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
> So your argument is that Bell Labs should have never happened? It was a bad thing for humanity?

Yes! next question please. ;) No in all seriousness. that's not what they said.

> My argument is that Monopolies are trade offs. In a world without monopolies you have very little innovation in peace time. Monopolies are bad for consumers but the trade off is that they can afford to innovate and push the world forward. It's not as black and white as people like to think.

I find this argument funny, as it states: "not as black and white as people think" to then paint a black and white argument... Yes monopolies are not always bad. But one can't be serious and not acknowledge that for the most part they stifle innovation.

Also, I would say some of humanities best inventions and innovations where before monopolies. But hey, that's just my "black and white" view on history ;)

Woeps··on Is Chrome the New IE? (2023)
In Europe Safari has decent 21%. Thus I would not neglect Apples web browser but calling it very important is going a step to far in my opinion.
Woeps··on Japanese workers turn to resignation agencies
I'm a bit surprised that people are so caught of guard.

I have never had a resignation period of less then 1 month in several European countries (BeNeLux and Poland)

My last job had resignation period of 7 week from the Monday after sending my notice.

Woeps··on The Hidden Tax Trap for SaaS Founders in Germany
Wait, are you suggesting we do not get taxed for what we're selling? Because in the end selling a company is nothing but selling a type of goods.

Also: >Why would a person who founded a startup, and put countless unpaid hours into building it, then have to pay for the sale as if it were employee income?

Is the same as: Why would a person who created his career, and put countless of unpaid hours into building it, then have to pay for the sale of his knowledge and skill?

Woeps··on No GPS required: our app can now locate underground trains
Uhm, Don't most underground trains already show you where you are? Or at worst, the sign of the station shows you your location?
Woeps··on VMware Fusion and Workstation Are Now Free for All Users
On how well the software caters to what a person needs?

It's actually pretty damning for Fusion that an hobbyist project can punch high enough to "compete" with professional software.

Woeps··on The decline of the working musician
>"Passions aren't critical."

Why are passions not critical? Also what would we define as critical? People have been kept alive with IV only diets. So in that case food would not be critical either.

Nobody really needs food (or food-culture) to be kept alive. Food is just a substance we need to enjoy the rest of the important things ;)

Woeps··on QNX is now free for anything non-commercial, plus there's an RPi image
I don't know QNX, never heard of them.

But the name and reputation of Blackberry are not things I would consider ... stellar or relevant...

Woeps··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Regardless of the "manipulate public opinion" claim ... , Didn't Clinton win the populair vote?
Woeps··on Steam games will need to disclose kernel-level anti-cheat on store pages
This is the exact reason why is started with streaming services for games (Gfore/boosteroid/game pass). Next the anti-cheat thing I also spend less waiting for updates. And this way I can still play these games with my buddies.
Woeps··on A return to hand-written notes by learning to read and write
> The thing is... if one dislikes or doesn't care about writing that they have basically forgotten how to, it is not spending money on a fancy writing implement that is gonna turn them into a medieval monk scribe.

The thing is, it does actually... Because it "forces" you to slow down and take time for it.

I hated writing (heavily dyslexic) but after getting a fountainpen and purposely slowing down I noticed it went better. Now I write in my own language again, I spend whole evenings writing scenes, essays, debates and letters.

Sometimes it is the tool that forces a bit of change (if you want to change of course).

Woeps··on A return to hand-written notes by learning to read and write
> in my view has no place in modern society outside of art.

For a lot of use cases I agree, but no place is to ... abrupt in my opinion. Computers for sure have a multiplier affect in many cases. But when you really want to think something trough it's advised to slow down. For those cases paper and pen is the perfect medium.

And I have a personal preference when making notes with pen and paper about hikes and climbs I'm working on/doing. But that's just me

Woeps··on The missing middle: firms in developing countries
But is the market actually free if you never get the chance to play? Or if a majority of players get nerfed by default because of "reasons"?
Woeps··on The missing middle: firms in developing countries
Thank you for pointing this out! It did for them on the back of others. The line has to go up mentality just puts resources from place A to place B.

Now lets get past that stage and make sure that it pays off for everybody.

Woeps··on Nintendo isn't just attacking emulators [video]
Wonder what the EU laws are on this, as for example also things as game mechanics/features are not something you can register in the EU. So I assume they can't really block Emulation there.

And in that case, would it make a difference where the development is done, and if the website is "geofenced"?

Woeps··on We're excited about our new roundabout
> For pedestrians and cyclists they are worse than the alternative (lights - or even a simple intersection) in my opinion.

As a cycling Dutch I prefer a roundabout to a traffic light. As a roundabout doesn't force a fullstop and takeoff again. Also because stopping/get going again is more difficult for elderly/injured people.
