Great, we can finally have some sanity in the smart home area. I think this area is Apple's new domain to master and dominate. In a few years, we'll see their products all over the home. I see smart screens, smart switches and even smart home robots. All coming from Apple.
People in companies that are a negative public good are by definition unethical. I'm not surprised by anything they do. The real problem is how we've let these companies infiltrate so much of our society so fast. I can't consume any ad supported media without getting some ad about them. This company really defines the phrase "money talks"
No, but given time the less courteous we towards each other the more violent we will be towards each other. How many times have you gotten upset because someone did not say please? So, it makes sense to keep the habit up no matter what/who we speak to, specially kids.
I suspect this is temporary. I think eventually we'll see a wave of laws outlawing weed and psychedelics (again), and then alcohol will make a strong comeback. Booze has been part of civilization since the beginning. There’s even a theory that grains were domesticated so people could brew beer first, as opposed to making bread first. Also, there's talk that the new generation understands that alcohol is bad for your health, so they are stopping, but the reality is that we've known about alcohol's issues forever, yet people have not stopped. No way this will last.
"I just feel having the little side project that makes a little money in this day and age is over now"
When you consider Wordle's popularity, it's hard for me to say that SaaS is over. I think the quality of the software needs to be top-notch plus it needs to offer something that only a net connected app can offer. I'd say something like networking, having many people connect in some manner. Also, the software has to be completely debugged and it needs to be something more than can be vibe coded in a few hours. Ultimately, it needs to be something that's great to use plus it needs to be something that's easier to pay for than to get AI to create.
I think the goal is to reduce the cost of tokens by orders of magnitude similar to the reduction of price on the transistor. So this means that the token processor, a GPU or a replacement, will get much cheaper on a per token basis. So the cycle will continue, more powerful new workhorses and less costly older models. A GPU crash? No, a continued GPU cycle of more usefulness at a lower cost per output is what's coming.
Additionally, the other side effct that people are not talking about is the reduction of cost on a watt of power. We will use more energy per person but the cost per watt will be so much cheaper. The datacenter build out is making electricity more expensive now but over the longer term capitalism has a tendency to make things we use, specially things we use a lot, very cheap on a per unit basis.
True, I am a true fan of the original series and the sequels up to Voyager. I tried watching some of the newer ones, but they all seem to focus on screen action rather than the story. A lot of fast-moving images, explosions, and battles with a very thin story. That might work for a few episodes, but not for a whole series. I don't think the series is without a fix, since the idea of finding new life will always be attractive. But, as always, the writing is what matters for the show, not a never-ending show about flashy battles and cool-looking shots. I hope they find their way back soon.
I'd like to say yes, but it's not likely. What will probably happen is that software development will change. New high-level development paradigms will appear where AI and humans will be able to develop software that's closer to putting together a puzzle than writing code line by line. Keep in mind, it's only been a few years since the current crop of AIs appeared. There's much more innovation coming.
All that 100x code will be thrown out rather than debugged. What's more likely to come is the age of disposable code.
What I observe is that what people don’t seem to grasp is that Zitron isn’t an AI sage. He’s simply someone who figured out that he can get a lot of attention by taking a contrarian stance when it comes to AI.
He can be 100% wrong about AI, but people will still read or listen to his next prediction. At this point, it’s mostly entertainment rather than a source of solid predictions.
He has one primary objective and that's to keep Ed Zitron in people’s minds by any means necessary.
It happens in sports, politics and, with Ed Zitron, AI.
Yup,100% true. Who in earth wants to maintain a codebase even if it was written in a day with AI? Let see do I spend months writing and debuging my Tax software or do I pay a company 50 bux for them to write and maintain it? I pick the 50 bux every time. Also, I also think that AI will create more SaaS services as more niche services come online because AI makes it easier to create software.
Prices will need to go down or the amount of value one gets from the service will need to go up but SaaS will continue.
"That leaves roughly two liters of fluids daily for women and three for men, says Kavouras. That translates to about 68 ounces and 101 ounces from beverages. "
Even the article points out what research points to for the amount of fluids we need.
I bet most people don't drink what they need on a daily basis.
Also, there are people like me that like the "taste" of water. I wasn't always a fan but once I started I acquired a liking for it.
MLMs have to be up there with the biggest scams, ever. My mother was scammed over and over under the guise of friendship. As a kid I remember there was very little money but there was always enough to buy another order of whatever. The ugliest part is that once you become a member you fall into the trap, you become part of the scam and become a scammer too. It's ultimately very sad once you learn it's a legal pyramid that eventually collapses and you're left holding the bag. And your "friends" led you to it.
With inflation everyone pays including the kids with lemonaid stands simply because the things we all buy get more expensive. I much rather have a fair tax system where those who have more pay a bit more. But that's not how people think so I think we'll see inflation contine plus whatever issues come with that.
My guess is that we'll eventually elect a populist liberal government similar to what happened after the great depression and FDR was elected. Simply because the lower and middle class will be so stressed trying to keep up with inflation that they/we will want a fix where the harder edges of capitalism are soften by government. It going to be interesting
Since we run a deficit and aren't paying any of it, in less than 14 yrs the debt will double just because of interest accumulated. I think I'm being generous. It will probably take way less time. This can't continue.
401k's and company's being able to buy their own stock has been a game changer for the stock market. You can't compare the pre 1980 data to today's stock market. As long as money flows into the stock market via 401k's and companies buying their own stock the s&p 500 will continue to flow upwards. There will be panic selling but the market will recover since index funds have to use what money investor's give them no matter which way the market is going. There will be a time when that won't be the case since more people will start to retire and will start to sell but for now the flow is up- in my opinion.
Networking, some people hate it but it makes careers so learn to do it.
I didn't see it until after the fact but preventing burn out. I was tech 100% and loved every bit. Eventually I burned out and it severely impacted my ability to stay up to date with new tech.
I have to point out that anyone that would have taken over a multibillion dollar company and trashed it, would be in the poor house looking at his best days in the back mirror plus they would have to deal with a truckload of lawsuits. Yet, he's still thriving. It seems that all of his business could do better if he was not leading them but they are all in positive light with their investors. Also, I'm pretty sure that Tesla and SpaceX would have died a long time ago but they are alive and kicking. Why is that?
This brings up the question of why some experts in their field become public icons while other fade away. I believe it comes down to relentless self promotion. Some people have that ability while at the same time not overdoing it. Albert Einstein was brilliant. But he became a public icon because of his ability to promot himself. He was able to make the most out of the publicity he received. Which made him so famous that decades after he died we all know who he was. Many of us don't really know why, other than he was smart, but we know him. There have been many really smart people but we don't know them as much as Einstein. Where ever you look you will see examples like him.
Obviously writing it will help but reading and understanding other's code is much more helpful at both reading and writing it. The more you read code the better you will get at reading it and writing it. Writing code will only get you so far. Reading code will expand your abilities so much more. Of course it has to be active reading. If you don't understand something, you need to take the time to Figure out why. You can't just skip it. Even code armatures will improve by reading as much code as possible,
AI is and is only going to dig deeper into the profession. Your job now is to embrace it and learn to use it to create solutions. The old model of getting specs from a manager of some kind and turning them into code is quickly going away. You job is to help define the specs and writing the instructions for the AI to program. Also, reading code like it's text in a book is a must. Writing code is quickly becoming something of the past. I suspect that programming is going to be more like putting together blocks of code that are completely debuged will be the future. The true valuable skill will be understanding what a human customer needs and getting the machine to write it. That skill will not go away any time soon.
The article is still relevant. Given the population slow down, I wonder how that will impact the investment returns as the amount of investment dollars diminish. I suspect as it starts to happen, the market will slowly open up to foreign capital. I know that foreign investors can invest now but it's a small percentage. I bet it will start to get very easy to invest in the US markets as a foreign investor as US money dries up.
I hate these stories since all they do is scare investors out of the market only to see then come back in at a higher price than they sold at. If you are a long term investor, continue investing. Bottom line, market timers always lose. I can't predict the future but I know the US and its stock market will be around for many more years to come. Invest on the overall market not individual stocks and you'll be ok.
What I find interesting in this show is that he took a hiatus from his profesorship to spend the time to find the proof. I think it was years. Also, he found the proof by providing a different conjecture(is that right) to solve Fermat.
Higher mathematics is just a different world to those of us who haven't even a clue how that world functions.
My bet is that 99% of people will never want to deal with installing an AI model on their machine. It's not worth their time and effort. Most people will get their AI from one of the hyperscalers or a server somewhere in the cloud. Think email, Gmail is a pain sometimes but we use it simply because it's so easy to get an account and not deal with maintenance. There will be a time, soon, where a good enough AI will be good enough for most people. A whatever company will have a cheap service you can buy. That's it. It's true that you can buy a cheap Apple setup relative to Nvidia but very few people want to deal with the headache of maintaining a model.
I suspect there will be a time when we will be able to install a full model in an app in an iPhone but that future is not here yet and in that future there will be other reasons why you will still want an account on the cloud. Prices will adjust accordingly. Nvidia will likely be part of that future. It's not going anywhere.
I get what you are saying but anyone that apposes the government will likely end up dead or in jail. We hear about it all the time. As a group the oligarchs have power against the government but as individuals they really don't. They just smile and continue to do what made them rich.
Extremely hopeful, there are always ways to find gloom. I'm sure 100 years, 200 years, and any other period you choose ago, people were scared of what was coming. Yet, we are here and thriving. As a species, race, nation, and individuals, we have overcome a lot and accomplished a lot. There is no reason to think that will stop. A meteor might get us, but we can't do anything about it, so there is no reason to worry about it, especially since we don't know. Our future is what we make it, so our best bet is to do our best so we get and have what we want. We are scared of what we don't know, so it's natural to feel gloomy about what's coming, but doom and gloom are not the norm. As a whole, we have done great. If you don't like what you see, then change it. Every one of the people who made a change in the world was unknown at one time. Yet, they changed that and changed the world. Don't for a second think that you can't.
I guess some people didn't get that I was being facetious. Just to be clear, SPACs did not turned out to be great investments as a whole. There are definitely better ways to invest your hard earned money.
You all renember SPACs,Special Purpose Acquisition Companies. And all the "experts" who needed the money because they had some great investment that could not be financed any other way. That wave hit its peek less than 5 years ago. Yup, that was a great way to invest. I suspect it happens at every cycle.
