TylerLives··on Learning Chess at 40 (2016)
Memorizing specific lines is only important at the highest level of competition. You should however have some rough idea of what you're trying to accomplish. Hanging Pawns channel[0] has videos about a lot of openings and their main ideas. I recommend Scotch Game for white and Sicilian Defense(any variation) for black. You can also use https://listudy.org as a tool to practice memorization(though I repeat, this is not worth focusing on). The most important thing imo is to play longer games(at least 15 minutes) and analyze them afterwards. There are some people who can improve by only playing shorter games, but from my experience, that's very rare.

> What we call “free will” consists of a multitude of forces we have no control over.

What is "we" in this context?

I don't understand this.

TylerLives··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
> if we think our culture is in fact more free, it will leak into Russia via the internet.

Do you think Russian leaders should allow this to happen?

TylerLives··on Ask HN: How Is Your Neck?
If you have access to the gym: Dumbbell Pull-Over, Farmer's Walk, Rack Pull, Planks. But most importantly, don't give up. Lifting weights can help you more than you think. I've had issues that I thought would never go away, but they did. It took a lot of experimentation until I found out what works for me, and those exercises might not necessarily work for you, but some other will.
TylerLives··on Heterosexual HIV diagnoses overtake those in gay men for first time in a decade
Those covid stats[0] are age standardized and per 100k people. There are still other differences between the populations that could explain it (for example the vaccinated are probably getting tested more often), but it's not as clear as this.

Others have linked some studies, but I wasn't aware that there's disagreement about this. I'll have to look into it more.

TylerLives··on Ask HN: What do you do to jump start your brain in the morning?
Wake up earlier and go to the gym. If you know you aren't productive when you wake up, it's best not to force it and do something else instead.
TylerLives··on Djokovic's PCR test was manipulated?
We need someone from Serbia who has done this test to verify.
TylerLives··on Ask HN: How do you accept your place in the world?
I accept nothing. I try to become better.

TylerLives··on Wasted $45,000 on a CS Degree to end up learning from YouTube
> but mostly every job posting you'll see for software is "requires bachelor of computer science or equivalent"

I'm not speaking from personal experience here, but from what I've read online, people without degrees often manage to get interviews at those companies, even though they don't meet the requirement.

TylerLives··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
Almost 24. I have no idea what I'm doing. I'll make the logo.

TylerLives··on Is college worth it? A return-on-investment analysis
I went to a college in a developing country and I regret it. I didn't lose money, but I wasted a lot of time and didn't really learn much (or rather, I did learn things during college, but not because of it). The lectures were unbearably boring and I didn't socialize much. More than anything, I hate the fact that I was too much of a coward to drop out once I realized how miserable I was doing all the fake and pointless work that was assigned to me. I forgot to say, I studied computer science.
TylerLives··on Speech Synthesis on Linux (2020)
Those lines were already in the config file. I'll try compiling Festival from source when I get home. Some people say that worked for them.

I'm using Pop OS 20.04(based on the same version of Ubuntu) and Festival 2.5.0
TylerLives··on You don’t see objective reality objectively
> Large complex systems which suppose the existence of an objective reality work very well. Any attempt to throw out the idea of objective reality still has to explain why these things work

How does science depend on the idea of "objective reality"? Would physics not work if we said that it's merely a model, one way of looking at things and not the Truth?

TylerLives··on The universe has already made almost all the stars it will ever make
> Or if your goal is to cure cancer, and you succeed, wouldn't that bring you happiness?

You would, for a time, and then you would get used to it. People in the past used to struggle to find food. Today almost everyone in the first world countries can eat as much as they'd like, but do we wake up happy and grateful because we have food? I do agree that not all of our happiness comes from moving towards goals in the future, but a lot of it does.

> Personally I'd rather pursue goals that can be achieved within my lifetime and aren't some crazy improper integral over the lifetime of the universe...

Me too, but I don't think that you have to choose. Even if you have some less realistic goals, it's still better to focus on the immediate problems.

TylerLives··on The universe has already made almost all the stars it will ever make
We mostly find meaning in moving towards a goal. Once we attain it, it no longer brings us happiness. Having no goals or thinking that some future reward will change our lives doesn't seem to lead to good outcomes. It's strange, but "becoming" itself is meaningful.
TylerLives··on Show HN: Voicera – Add life-like AI voice dictation to your blogs and articles
I don't have an answer to your question but I'm curious about something else: What kind of results would you get if you used one of the paid TTS models to generate a dataset and then trained your model on that dataset? Would it be possible to recreate their model in this way?
TylerLives··on PureOS – a pure Linux phone experience
It did. Thanks.
