Triphibian··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Re-read this recently and wholeheartedly agree. It is an ur-text for the Fallout wasteland for sure.
Triphibian··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I had this same question and am very curious about what triggers a certain cultural work's resurgence.

Only semi-related I forced my son to explain to me why so many young people knew the song "Big Iron" by Marty Robbins.

Triphibian··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Narcissus and Goldmund has a similar shape to Siddhartha -- covering similar ground with two protagonists instead of one. Also great.
Triphibian··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Just finished: The Castle by Jon Ronson, very funny and enlightening look at the unraveling of some men.

Just started : Catch the Devil by Pamela Colloff, true crime about a con artist in Florida who traded overheard (probably fabricated) jailhouse confessions for a seemingly endless chain of get out of jail free cards.

Triphibian··on Strange Parodies of Atari 2600 Video Game Box Cover Art (2008)
This feels like stolen Worth1000 content.
Triphibian··on Joseph Szabo’s pictures of American adolescents
When that Dinosaur Jr. album cover showed up it made so much sense.

Show HN: I hated the really small font on this website so I coded a fix for it.

Triphibian··on George Lucas Returns to Earth, Bearing Gifts
This group photo from the opening gala doesn't have all the stars that were present that night, but what a wild assortment of talent this is. https://deadline.com/2026/09/lucas-museum-opening-hollywood-...

This tells me you should always pay cash if you are having a beer.
Triphibian··on Every exterior shot in The Taking of Pelham 123
This is fairly timely since you'd probably be hard pressed to do the same thing with the new Spider-Man movie, which was apparently shot in Glasgow?
Triphibian··on No one can afford to make Myst games anymore
Interesting timing on this article considering The Big Walk comes out this week. Obviously the game is not as intricate as a Myst game, but it feels like the perfect mixture of a game where design really matters and reaction to what the market wants. People like playing together and collaborating to make their own fun. It is not hard to imagine a version of Myst like this -- the most fun I have had playing a PC game was sitting next to a friend as we played Riven beginning to end.

Triphibian··on What if we made advertising illegal?
If only there were some institution full of independently minded individuals who could tell us, plainly and evenhandedly, without undue influence, about products we might be interested in.
Triphibian··on I'm Making Strandfall, a Solarpunk Orienteering Larp
The whole paragraph that starts with, "Smartphones are anti-enchantment devices" is gold. Love where you are coming from with this.
Triphibian··on CD sales growth outpaced vinyl in the first half of 2026
I bought Ween's Brown Box collection in this period. A band's entire studio output on CD for $50 felt like a great value. When I see single CDs at Barnes and Noble with a MSRP of $18 and more I feel otherwise.
Triphibian··on The kids with phones are alright
He has a Lightphone which he hates. That's how I know it is working. He built a gaming PC last year, so I am aware that Pandora's box is open there. But look, it has been thirteen years of playing whackamole with YouTube. I can't keep him off it. They watch it at school. They give him chromebooks that I have no control over. And the stuff I do have control over the control is tenuous. I have largely given up. He is pretty much grown now. But man, has it felt like gaslighting when people are like, "Do parenting. Use the settings. Get a dumb phone. Problem solved."
Triphibian··on The kids with phones are alright
And have you ever tried to find or access parental settings on a school Chromebook?
Triphibian··on The kids with phones are alright
And of course these settings do nothing if he just opens any browser and watches YouTube logged off.
Triphibian··on The kids with phones are alright
It took some digging but I found that setting on browser. Thank you. I'd love a big toggle for "brain fucking" that you could just set to off.
Triphibian··on The kids with phones are alright
Where's the setting to make YouTube not display shorts?
Triphibian··on Buried Apple feature turns an iPhone into the perfect kids' dumb phone
You're the pro. But as a casual observer, games tend to have menus with lots of settings options. Every other bit of software I use has next to none. Totally anecdotal, so I totally understand that my view is probably skewed. Keep up the good work?
Triphibian··on Buried Apple feature turns an iPhone into the perfect kids' dumb phone
I keep observing that accessibility features often contain the tools we need to make our devices and apps more humane. This is one area that video games have been way ahead on.
Triphibian··on Show HN: Criterion Closet as a website – pull any of 1,247 films off the shelf
There are public domain movies in the collection, notably Night of the Living Dead and Carnival of Souls.
