Toenex··on Show HN: Dendron – A Hierarchical Tool for Thought
Maybe Dynalist is worth a look? Basically an outliner in the Workflowy style but it has linking and backlinking at the node level.
Toenex··on The four dangerous animals of product development
Being data driven can be as simple as sales telling you how many people are asking for a feature as opposed to "everybody".
Toenex··on Writing Is Thinking (2014)
This is an interesting point. Is there a legal notion of 'perpetuality' for creative works? Would it be better if Amazon was seen as the current custodian rather than absolute owner? More like an art gallery.
Toenex··on For reliable excess returns, VC funds need 500 investments
It's a similar phenomenon to media celebrities who clearly have access to special information that makes them a good choice for Tv interviews on just about anything.
Toenex··on I can't believe I'm praising Tcl (2008)
Granted (on Android at least.) https://www.androwish.org/home/home
Toenex··on 'Street Fighter II' Wasn’t Just a Game, It Was a Portal
Ah very similar here for me too. Karate Champ at the kebab shop opposite school in 1980's North London. Winner stays on. Always got to the point where you had to decide between a potential high score and avoiding a whipping for being late.
Toenex··on Oppose the Earn IT Act
We all know what happens in the bathroom, yet we still close the door. Privacy is a choice that belongs to me.
Toenex··on BBC Computer Literacy Project 1980 – 1989
Similar memories for me too. Born in '69 and also felt part of a unique period in tech and the UK.

In case you haven't seen it, I would definitely recommend watching the BBC film Micro Men (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00n5b92). Enjoy.

Toenex··on TfL closes 40 tube stations, suspends Night Tube, fewer trains, buses next week
Thanks that was an interesting read. If the heat sink begins to dissipate are any structural risks to the network?
Toenex··on On the shoulders of the giants
Snap a photo of the covers and box 'em up.
Toenex··on Paris Mayor: It's Time for a '15-Minute City'
And Manchester (UK) the 10mm city. Every time you step outside you will absorb at least 10mm of water.
Toenex··on How These Things Work – A book about CS from first principles (2016)
Nice. I did an EE degree many years ago even though I wanted to work in software. The single best course I did was to design, simulate and have fabricated a 4 bit microprocessor. It completely solidified my understanding of how computations took place. Hopefully, texts like this will do the same for others.
Toenex··on What's Happening with the Coronavirus
I wonder how we could use viral outbreak data to better understand the cohesion between nations?
Toenex··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
Very true. Therefore I always suggest people look at the organisation more than the specific role and learn how to evolve the starting position.
Toenex··on Panopticon
Isn't this how some public transport works (at least in the UK)? There's only a limited number of inspectors on the trams in Manchester so I probably won't get stopped but I don't know where they will be. I think the outcome is that the punishment has to be significant enough otherwise people work the probabilities.

(Note I always buy a ticket because I can afford it and want successful public transport.)

Toenex··on When good ideas make bad business
This. Been through two medical device companies that pivoted from clinical trials to product and the major hardships came from not fully understanding the money trail. In the UK the 'Cathedral' of the NHS means that the benefits may not be felt by the your customer.
Toenex··on Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney changed video game industry
This is indeed how Tim sees Fortnite. It's like the MVP of his metaverse idea.

Toenex··on Web-assembly powered WYSIWYG LaTeX Editor, supporting nearly all LaTeX package
This is a good observation. Interestingly, I'm quite a visual writer in that the final form of the piece influences my writing. However, I still prefer the latex workflow of entering the text in a raw form coupled with regular compilation into the final layout. Perhaps as a developer of just feels more like coding to isolate and iterate.
Toenex··on A proof that Unix utility sed is Turing complete
I do like the thought experiment that I might not want Turing completeness from a language in a specific use case.
Toenex··on Sex censorship killed the internet we love
> I think one reason is that violence is much easier to fake than sex.

If this was Reddit this line would spawn a comment thread longer than MAX_INT.

Toenex··on What's a CPU to do when it has nothing to do?
That was one of the goals of the AMULET project at Manchester University.
Toenex··on The History of Gopher
I'm from that 'golden age' of computing and it was special. I was a child in the 70's and a teen in the 80's and it felt like a new frontier. Even at University in the late 80's and early 90's we knew we were unique as the generation that grew up with computers and saw each stage build on the next. We've gained so much, yet I too still miss the the simplicity and challenge of lesser systems.
Toenex··on IRC turns thirty
Same people bagged themselves a WinZip license too I'll bet!
Toenex··on Eerie Skyglow Called 'Steve' Isn't an Aurora, Is 'Completely Unknown' to Science
"I just don't get it Mork, why don't the earthlings reply? Our messages couldn't be clearer."
Toenex··on The truth about ‘breakthrough’ drugs
But in a bid to mitigate risk (from their shareholders) big pharma effectively outsources lots of compound discovery to biotechs. This has helped create a large pool of biotech startups that never intend to run a phase 1 study but instead prepare for acquisition upon promising preclinical.
Toenex··on Man Who Stole Plane Near Seattle Raises Troubling Security Question
Unless of course as an employee he had access to one.
Toenex··on Some Amazon Reviews Are Too Good to Be Believed – They're Paid For
Yes, tie the review more personally to the reviewer. I guess this is more like the influencer culture we see a on Instagram and YouTube.
Toenex··on Should I Learn Java in 2018
>...so interpret that as you will.

Probably 'just in time' as this a Java thread.

Toenex··on How a Kalman filter works, in pictures (2015)
I wrote this [http://www.tina-vision.net/docs/memos/1996-002.pdf] many years ago which derives the Kalman filter from a state space perspective and then as chi-squared merit function. Certainly helped me as an engineer appreciate the statistical underpinnings.
Toenex··on Fourier transforms of images (2017)
An MRI scanner is effectively Fourier domain camera - see k-space [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-space_(magnetic_resonance_im...] - with the final spatial images being reconstructed once acquisition is complete. Quite beautiful really.
