Toenex··on New Study: Waymo is reducing serious crashes and making streets safer
Honestly future generations will be aghast at how we accepted road deaths caused by human drivers.
Toenex··on DeepMind releases Lyria 2 music generation model
I want AI to be able to do everything so the I can choose to do anything.
Toenex··on A Map of British Dialects (2023)
In the UK people from Liverpool and Manchester are rivals until they meet someone from London when it becomes a North Vs South thing. That all changes again when they meet someone from Glasgow when it becomes England Vs Scotland and yet again when the British meet someone French. There is always a more foreign foe.
Toenex··on Claude can now search the web
Maybe we already have Universal Basic Income, you just need to have a pointless job to collect it.
Toenex··on Statistical Formulas for Programmers (2013)
Personally always loved me a Bland-Altman plot (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bland-Altman_plot)
Toenex··on TfL's simple pop-up message led to a significant drop in paper ticket sales
Manchester is slowly limping out the Bee Network (or whatever it's called now) which is modelled on Oyster. Tram and local train journeys can be mixed on a touch in/out system and the buses are to be included as the route contracts end.
Toenex··on Poor people ‘surviving not living’ as UK social contract collapses, says report
Never thought I would see the Sleaford Mods mentioned in a Hacker News thread. As a 50-something UK male I agree the world has gone a bit weird when the rallying cry for revolution is a well articulated by my peers as by the youth.
Toenex··on Apple says it'll remove iMessage and FaceTime in UK rather than break encryption
Absolutely. Another concern I have is the demonstrable incompetence of the UK government. If they have my data, which will only ever paint a partial picture of what I do, who knows what conclusions they may draw. I don't want to spend hours talking to nice policemen because my GPS data shows me regularly in the same park as some known terrorist just because they've never heard of a park run.
Toenex··on Commodore 64 VIC-II 6567/6569 Replacement Project
Don't forget the Spectrum ZX Next (https://www.specnext.com/) if you can get one. I managed to get a N-GO clone from ebay last year (https://manuferhi.com/p/n-go-full-include-wifi-rpi-zero) which is excellent.
Toenex··on Britain is sleepwalking into censorship?
The United Kingdom has a constitution but not a specifically written one.

Rik Mayalls acceptance speech at Exeter University when he was awarded a honorary Doctorate is a reminder of what genuinely beautiful human being he was. https://youtu.be/1jjFEFyI8FU
Toenex··on United Airlines will buy 15 planes from Boom Supersonic
Yep. Many years ago I was a junior at an engineering consultancy that specialised in noise & vibration. I spent many a happy hour out in the sun replacing melted loudspeakers that were being used to feed 'anti noise' into the exhaust ports of a pair of RB211 jet engines. The engines were ground mounted vertically to introduce pressure into the gas network should an emergency loss arise. This was rural Cheshire (UK) and some of the local properties were very old and expensive and needed protection from the vibrations these things produced. In reality they were never used but they were tested twice a year, for a total of about 2 minutes. After that the speakers (yep lots of hi-fi cones) were mush. They did their job though. And I got to travel up to Cheshire, see my then girlfriend who lived in Manchester and spend a week up on a roof in the sunshine replacing them.
Toenex··on The Trouble with Brain Scans
It's a while since I ran fMRI studies but my favourite analogy was to tell people that it was like trying to measure your electricity usage by watching your water meter.
Toenex··on UK finds 30 blood clot cases after AstraZeneca jab
Does this comparison account for the vaccinations being administered to specific populations? In the UK it's been targeted at the most vulnerable & elderly.
Toenex··on Short fat engineers are undervalued
I think the management point is a good one. A valuable generalist role is working at the interface between management and the specialists in the team. As an engineer I was much more of a generalist which lead me into product management.
Toenex··on Read Hacker News on reMarkable tablet
This is the curse of the hacker mentality.
Toenex··on Dhewm3 – Doom3 Source Port
Rewriting in Ada means it will be easier for NASA to approve for use on a Mars colony.

Toenex··on Full Throttle – fan film script by Duncan Jones [pdf]
Last I heard Duncan Jones was circling The Black Hole remake which I would be much more interested in.
Toenex··on Commoditize your complement (2019)
Interesting read. I guess you can view what Amazon has done in this light. Provide the best solution to taking possession of things. The complement being the supply chain that marketplace aims to commoditize.
Toenex··on If-then-else had to be invented
It's surprising how often you can replace 'but' with 'and' in a sentence.
Toenex··on Pfizer Covid vaccine approved for use next week in UK
The half dose was an 'experimental endpoint'. Always planned but not seen as critical. FDA rules now stipulate you can only register on primary endpoints declared before the trial starts. I suspect AZ have argued that the accelerated nature of the process should take this into account.
Toenex··on Pfizer Covid vaccine approved for use next week in UK
Yes I think they only need to hit 50% for approval. Conservatively they were getting 62% as I recall and the 'experimental endpoint' dose got them to 90%.

The Oxford vaccine is far cheaper (15x) and easier to store so long term it has a lot of competitive advantages.

Toenex··on Pfizer Covid vaccine approved for use next week in UK
I suspect the bulk of the population will receive the 'Oxford' vaccine. It's still going through the approval process but the UK has ordered more of it. I believe the Pfizer vaccine is targeted to front line workers and the clinical vulnerable.
Toenex··on Ian Fleming Explains How to Write a Thriller (2018)
Surely you don't think he invented the name 'Pussy Galore'?
Toenex··on Hemingway Editor
To communicate best, you should like the reader speaks.
Toenex··on Older Workers May Be Less Susceptible to Burnout
It always felt to me that startups are best for the under 25s and the over 45s. In between you have so many other commitments it's a challenging balance. I say this as someone who spent most of his 30's & 40's in startup land.
Toenex··on Dear ImGui – Bloat-free graphical user interface library for C++
Immediate mode is a stateless design pattern.
Toenex··on I made a database of TL;DR business strategies/case studies
Yes this is one of those slightly annoying biases on HN. 90% of the time Product = SaaS. I'd like to hear some stories from folks who have adapted the techniques from this space to work in other markets. Iterating on hardware, embedded software, small number but high value customer markets etc.
Toenex··on Product-market fit for a B2B company
Yes in this case it can be seen as a necessary but not sufficient condition.
