Thoreandan··on Breaking copy protection on a 1983 game for Apple 2
Nice article! Loved the Atari port of this game.
Thoreandan··on Thoughts on Flash (2010)
Another interesting open letter from Jobs was "Thoughts on music"

https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/15878/open-letter-07

I seem to recall a third open letter on another subject but search fails me at the moment

Thoreandan··on Compuserve
Same, MPP Express, and the 313 area code BBS Listing. ;)
Thoreandan··on Speed Test
I liked the detailed output of the M-LAB tests, unfortunately the amount of data has fallen over time. They'd also check for traffic shaping / blocking once upon a time. I think the project lasted only as long as the grad students who wrote it were there.
Thoreandan··on Amazon shuts down customer’s smart home
Was surprised to see in the comments that Tay Zonday had his decades of Amazon book reviews deleted when a vendor flagged a negative review he wrote about an air filter as racist.
Thoreandan··on Strlcpy and strlcat added to glibc 2.38
25 years on. Congrats OpenBSD
Thoreandan··on My broken ThinkPad plays music upon booting
Apple PowerPC Macs definitely did this - the car crash would play if POST failed.

Thoreandan··on Hutter Prize Submission 2021a: STARLIT and cmix (2021)
Context: This is the fifth winner (14 Jul 2021) of this ongoing lossless data compression contest.

http://prize.hutter1.net/

Tangentially related: The Large Text Compression Benchmark (same target data files, but less restrictions than the Hutter Prize) is currently being led by an AI (Transformer) powered algorithm from Fabrice "QEMU, TCC, and FFMPEG" Bellard.

Thoreandan··on Nearly half of the tap water in the US is contaminated with ‘forever chemicals,’
I've been out of the loop but the last I read about PFAs was "They accumulate, we don't know if they're toxic or at what dose". That appears to have changed. Once upon a time CSPINet was good for info like this, but I haven't found any details yet.
Thoreandan··on Dear Red Hat: Are you dumb?

Thoreandan··on Dechlorinating the Moderator

Thoreandan··on Phishing domains tanked after Meta sued Freenom
Google's ignoring spam is especially egregious through side channels, e.g. spammers adding you to Photos message shares.
Thoreandan··on M.U.L.E. 40th Anniversary Special
You sure you weren't thinking of the Spheroid? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FnHF4unXwAYnhEM?format=png&name=...
Thoreandan··on Beans are protein-rich and sustainable. Why doesn’t the US eat more of them?
Soy has a bad PR problem despite no proof in tests.

Thoreandan··on DeepFloyd IF: open-source text-to-image model
"Hi! I'm B-19-7, but to everyperson I'm called Floyd." -Planetfall (1983)

My first thought on seeing "Floyd" and "IF" together. It looks like a Pink Floyd reference from the About page on https://deepfloyd.ai/ though.

Thoreandan··on Lessons by 3blue1brown
What made his videos catch my eye was the plotting of the vector text fonts, I love that effect. I'm pretty sure he used the Hershey fonts in early videos.
Thoreandan··on Previously unknown isotope of uranium discovered
A recent Periodic Videos episode (highlighting a newly discovered sodium isotope) went over the puzzle of which isotopes of elements are known to exist and showed a chart of what we know today -

Episode: https://youtu.be/vl0_DElyTZU

Thoreandan··on My Best Friend Died from Loneliness
Also effective: nuking the <head> section in dev tools.

Thoreandan··on Domain registrar Gandi gets bought out, removes free mailboxes
I'd be a lot happier as a long-time GANDI customer if there was any mention of this whatsoever on https://news.gandi.net ... nothing there since 2022. :-(
Thoreandan··on Domain registrar Gandi gets bought out, removes free mailboxes
There's things like

purl-dot-org https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persistent_uniform_resource_lo...

or

.onion https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.onion

e.g. http://p53lf57qovyuvwsc6xnrppyply3vtqm7l6pcobkmyqsiofyeznfu5... will be up even if the propublica.org domain is broken / disabled.

Thoreandan··on Domain registrar Gandi gets bought out, removes free mailboxes
TIL.

Thoreandan··on R.L. Stine accuses publisher of censoring Goosebumps books without permission
That escalated quickly. Considered eating a Snickers?
Thoreandan··on Where has all the Chartreuse gone?
While looking to see if Buckfast was explicitly banned from import, I did a Google search for '"buckfast tonic" site:gov' giving two hits, one of which was a cardiology report about a 16 year old who'd reported to the ER after drinking it mixed with Red Bull. Yikes.
Thoreandan··on Ask HN: How to know if laptop enrolled in Intel Management Engine?
"Intel considers SGX instructions to be a security vulnerability, as a malware could abuse it to make the computer lose some of the functionality that the typical user expects, such as the ability to play media with DRM."

fixed it

Thoreandan··on Tell HN: You can get ghostbanned for mentioning certain “unpersons.”
Which post, the one about hot grits? ;-)

showdead=yes (from elsewhere in this thread) is a nice tip. Your post was RSS syndicated to brutalist-dot-report, which led me to this still-alive comment page.

Hey, didja know this site was created when a bunch of Internet trolls made fun of a new version of Lisp?

Thoreandan··on Ask HN: Why is Google Chrome covertly scanning my Hard Drive?
On Windows, the Resource Monitor will let you watch most filesystem activity, filtered by process.

Some types of I/O show up as being by the 'System' (pid 4) process as well.

Thoreandan··on Natural language is the lazy user interface
English was my mother's 5th language, I can relate to acting as interpreter for family.

I'm reminded of the "Voice Recognition Lift" sketch from the Scottish comedy Burnistoun - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqAu-DDlINs

Thoreandan··on Ask HN: Google spam filter getting worse?
Yes, I've been seeing more in GMail, but that's nothing compared to Google Photos spam and Google Calendar spam, which I get hit with every other day.

To maximize the ridiculousness, Google sends me an email thanking me for each image abuse report or chat abuse report done in Photos -- but they don't seem to be actually /doing/ anything about it.

Thoreandan··on ReactOS
There are bits and pieces that were (are?) better architected - I'm always a fan of biodiversity in the field.

From what I've seen, XNU/NT/Linux/BSD diversity has, despite all their frustrations, been a net benefit.
