TheMerovingian··on Vast new stores of water reported on the moon
But the moonshine is fantastic!
TheMerovingian··on Ask HN: People with direct knowledge of YouTube Algorithm-why the repeats?
I'd say the contrary; repeats don't impact the algorithm negatively, so nothing is done about it.
TheMerovingian··on Capsaicin is a psychoactive substance
Fiery urine is normal for folks that eat a lot of spicy foods.
TheMerovingian··on Ask HN: How do I/you prep for the energy crisis in EU?
I no longer live in the EU, but one of the habits that I've taken with me is canning. Pickles, tomatoes, green beans, etc. It just requires salt, vinegar, the veggies, and some jars (and space, obviously). Solid addition to any meal.

More on this, I grew potatoes recently in my garden and stocked them in my garage. A tote of potatoes can last a couple people for months. It requires potatoes, some sand and a cool, dark place to keep it all.

TheMerovingian··on NASA can now reliably produce a tree’s worth of oxygen on Mars
Mods... lots of mods...
TheMerovingian··on Ask HN: Having trouble getting senior applicants, wondering what to do about it
Agreed. If you give out take-home tests, they shouldn't take longer than an hour.

Unless, you pay them for the time. A few companies I applied to 6-7 months ago offered this. However, if you're on unemployment benefits, this may count as income.

TheMerovingian··on A Visual Guide to the Aztec Pantheon
I'd love to see this for the old Slavic gods (e.g. Perun, Vales, etc).
TheMerovingian··on If operating systems were beers (1995)
Probably the last remaining sane ones?
TheMerovingian··on Ask HN: SWE who started an organic farm in Europe, where did you go?
I've been following a number of folks who also moved to Portugal with the intent of buying an old plot of land and refurbishing it into a working farm for themselves [0]. As much as it is fun to imagine living this lifestyle, it is very hard work. I'd reiterate the water issue in Portugal; it can rain for a month, but it can also be dry for many more months. A water well or cistern is recommended.

TheMerovingian··on GoodWill ransomware forces victims to donate to the poor
Needs more blockchain.
TheMerovingian··on Bugs are evolving to eat plastic, study finds
/me starts wearing non-plastic clothing
TheMerovingian··on Growing food in hard clay
Compaction doesn't stop the moment we loosen the soil. I'd say that it needs a liberal application of compost after your explosion, to let the critters and fungus penetrate deep.
TheMerovingian··on Growing food in hard clay
Due to the pandemic, the amount of gardeners has increased substantially. So, this type of info is making a resurgence on YouTube in the form of instructional videos and elsewhere as blogs.
TheMerovingian··on Ask HN: What's your greatest enjoyment in life?
Gardening is my greatest joy, and has been for over a decade.
TheMerovingian··on PBS SpaceTime
+1 Sabine Hossenfelder. I find her way of explaining a bit more towards my tastes.
TheMerovingian··on The Coming Food Catastrophe
Consider canning and fermenting some of your food. Also, grow things that can last throughout winter, such as potatoes, carrots, beets, etc. They can last in a cool dark place for months. Broccoli and Okra can be blanched and flash-frozen. Cucumbers can make pickles.

There are tons of good ideas out there about preserving your own food. But, I agree, that a small garden won't take a big bite out of your food needs. You're not trying to become self-sufficient, you're trying to lower your reliance on store-bought food.

TheMerovingian··on Show HN: Find companies with jobs using technologies you love
Likewise, looking for C jobs in Waterloo, Canada shunts me over to Austin, TX for some reason.
TheMerovingian··on Ask HN: Is it normal to be ghosted for senior position job interviews?
I was looking for work in November and even thought I have 15 years in software and cybersecurity, I still got ghosted by multiple recruiters. Two of which were at Google, and another at Apple. After talking to a friend at Google, she made it seem that their recruiting department was having issues (which I inferred to be staffing issues). For non-FAANG companies, I had no issues going through their interviews. Their recruiters and hiring staff were all very well prepared and the processes were smooth.

Keep trying OP!

TheMerovingian··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
Then I can't joke that "it's 5pm somewhere"...
TheMerovingian··on Google Search Is Dying
I recently found myself looking for info on gardening potatoes. Each time I used google, I'd get the equivalent of "Top 10 things to plant this spring". It's AI generated drivel, void of any substance. Like reading book's table of contents, nothing else.

I added "site:reddit.com" and I had my answer on the first hit. This is sad.

TheMerovingian··on [dead]
Such as? The burden of proof is on you to corroborate your statements.
TheMerovingian··on The Factorio Mindset
I found that it didn't scale as much as Factorio. I'm the type with over 3K hours in the game, who likes to build absurdly massive bases.
TheMerovingian··on BlackBerry sells mobile patents to patent troll for $600M
Does anyone know which patents? I'm curious since my name is on a number of them.
TheMerovingian··on Rust for Embedded C Programmers
You're not the only one. Been coding for 15 years in C and I had an easier time getting into Python, Assembly, Java, and Go. There is something about Rust that just seems harder than it should be.

I think since it's close to C, my mind wants to read it like C. It's a problem with my brains prefetcher.

TheMerovingian··on Ask HN: What book should I buy for my 18th birthday?
My recommendation: A Brief History of Progress by Ronald Wright. My Wife's recommendation: Your Money or Your Life.
TheMerovingian··on Why so many workers have lost interest in their jobs
If work is stopping you from having a veggie garden or reading a book, it might be time to consider new work.
TheMerovingian··on I won over $55M in the lottery, but didn’t tell my friends or family
I don't think you need to win the lottery to be in this situation. Imagine having a cushy job in a FAANG company, where your base salary is probably more than what your parents make combined. It is in my case.

I made the mistake of telling them (roughly) what I earn and it definitely has changed the way they interact with me. I get remarks about my 'wealth' and that I can easily drop $10K on something frivolous. I get other remarks that compare their hard job to my 'easy' job that has catering and long lunch breaks. No one asks how my mental state is. No one asks whether I take my work home with me at the end of the day. No one asks how many hours I put in. All they see is a family member that will drop a ton of cash on a nice vacation or a larger house.

Word of advice: don't tell your family how much you make either.

TheMerovingian··on Garden Hermit
Or working from home.
TheMerovingian··on Half of UK university students think degree is poor value for money
I have a community college diploma and a university degree. I can say that the 3 years I spend in community college learning to code; learning systems, design patterns, various languages, etc... it has served me far better than the knowledge I earned at university.

Community college is a second class citizen and it's hard to convince people of its merits to society.

TheMerovingian··on Seven Years of Factorio Friday Facts (2020)
Probably the best game I have ever played and the only game I bought not once, but thrice (two were gifts).

As a developer, it allowed me to determine what kind of developer I am, where my interests lie, and how I contribute to code (or a base). The analogue between coding and Factorio is incredible.
