Sunset··on Culture Clash at a Chinese-Owned Plant in Ohio
Ah yes, all of those protectionist politicians who want to levy import taxes. Do you even listen to yourself?
Sunset··on Hackers Are Hijacking Phone Numbers and Breaking into Email, Bank Accounts
This needs to change as well. We nee to do away with the concept of a select few TLDs, indeed we need to scrap payed for subdomains/domains in general.
Sunset··on The transgenic petunia carnage of 2017
>Human genes don't spread by pollination

Are you sure :D

Sunset··on Ultraconserved words in use since the last Ice Age
The Bulgarian form is the same as the russian чай (chay).
Sunset··on Bugger: Maybe spies aren't very good at their jobs (2013)
>See how this works?

Not quite. My opinions aren't a secret IRL. I am surrounded by like minded individuals and am not afraid to voice my ideas freely.

There is a serious difference in the way I approach weapons training/survival and the way my ideological opponents do. So I am not that concerned.

But this is not the point. The point is, people will rebel if you put them into a corner.

Sunset··on Bugger: Maybe spies aren't very good at their jobs (2013)
If the technology exists to do nefarious-thing-X, one must assume that governments are already using X despite whatever moral or political arguments they give you that they would never do it.

If we ever come to live in such a dystopian society I'm going to use our new found peeping power to mark political enemies and remove them all in a night of the long knives stile ordeal then overthrow the government and burn everything to the ground.
Sunset··on Oculus founder Palmer Luckey is developing border surveillance technology
If only there was a 100% sure fire way to prevent an ideology from exerting control over new vulnerable people.

There has to be a solution

Sunset··on Why Climate Skeptics Are Wrong
Have fun convincing China to commit economic suicide.
Sunset··on Alexander Grothendieck: A Country Known Only by Name
Yes. Actually.
Sunset··on What Really Happened with Vista
Another highly annoying example of good ideas just not finished properly is trying to use multiple virtual desktops on multiple monitors. For some reason switching the virtual destkots switches to the new desktop for ALL physical monitors. Just why...

The devs have also STILL not figured out how to give a simple and easy way to move windows from one monitor to another from the alt-tab menu.

Sunset··on Ask HN: Books you wish you had read earlier?
If you're already christian, I'd recommend not reading the bible cover to cover. I did, and it made me an atheist.
Sunset··on Ringless voice mails from telemarketers
You could always show up to their office IRL and start some shit.
Sunset··on Ringless voice mails from telemarketers
Not going to happen.
Sunset··on Ringless voice mails from telemarketers
You know what happens in the real world? That person exits through the door, finds enough people like him outside and gets into political power, then proceeds to show the door to the smug stickman.
Sunset··on Ringless voice mails from telemarketers
>How does one enforce such a thing, around the world

Strongarming.

>Who is capable of making such a thing possible?

The US.

Sunset··on Secretive Billionaire Makes The Cheese For Pizza Hut, Domino's And Papa John's
> Capitalism is founded on exploitation

As opposed to being founded on stealing other people's stuff.

Sunset··on Enough with the dead butterflies
>There's an enormous gap between knowing the specs of a pump and knowing which company will make one that won't break and will provide decent service for it.

With a few fast and hard rules mostly based on country of origin and price you can go a long way( specifically talking about water pumps ).

Sunset··on Bitcoin mining companies face shutdown in southwest China
Being the personification of a crony career politician cost her the election.
Sunset··on No politics please, we're hackers, too busy to improve the world
I think you underestimate the brand recognition of Trump's name. His twitter profile pales in comparison to the years of Movie and TV exposure, the construction business and so on.

Trump has been a brand for an upwards of 50 years.

Sunset··on Fact-checking Donald Trump's statement withdrawing from Paris climate agreement
Wow, literally five year plans and out-virtue signaling one another who will craft more draconian regulations to warp the market.
Sunset··on No politics please, we're hackers, too busy to improve the world
Lets say, theoretically they block that one account. What would be twitter's recourse if the POTUS decides to Gitmo their CEO/developers/prod engineers in retaliation.
Sunset··on Mark Zuckerberg is in love with the coco coco
>and attention spans

No, that goes to 5 minute youtube videos with some annoying "face" jumpcutting 5 times a second.

Sunset··on With chemical tweaks, an old antibiotic is now more potent and resistant
What I want to know is: Is there some kind of mode of attack we can use, such that when the bacteria develop a resistance to it, in order to have the resistance they must necessarily become vulnerable to something else.

If you have two or three of these things which are mutually linked. The bacteria can become resistant to one but will become vulnerable to the other.

I am however not a biologist, just a developer, so please excuse me if I am mistaken.

Is such a thing even possible? Is some one working on something like this?

Sunset··on Maybe Skip SHA-3
Isn't this something you don't want? I'd rather use an algo which is painful to do in bulk.
Sunset··on A year of digging through code yields “smoking gun” on VW, Fiat diesel cheats
The problem with "moral obligations" is a person's moral axioms are fundamentally arbitrary. Would you still want engineers to be guided by their moral convictions when you fundamentally disagree with them yourself?
Sunset··on A year of digging through code yields “smoking gun” on VW, Fiat diesel cheats
>In my opinion (and I welcome disagreement and debate) engineers have an obligation to say 'no' to wiring unethical code.

I respectfully disagree. Engineers have an obligation to do whatever is asked of them by management. If that means building nuke-hand-grenades so be it.

Being an engineer( be it software or mechanics ) should be a morally neutral thing. Do the job and keep your morals out of it. This is the only way we can have some semblance of sanity in the field.

Oh look, the natural course of bubbles.
Sunset··on Turning Off GitHub Issues (2016)
How about this,

I don't bother with mailing lists, and when I post an "issue" on the site, the system mails you on your preferred mailing list. Then You reply to the mail with your preffered client and it shows up for me in the issue thread on github?
