SuddsMcDuff··on What US Software Companies Should Understand About the Rest of the World
Most of Europe doesn't see Putin as a dictator - that's just some hysterical nonsense the US mainstream media likes to peddle.. Americans gotta have an enemy figure to fixate on!

SuddsMcDuff··on UN panel 'rules in Assange's favour'
There was a petition - it got something pitiful like 650 votes. Apparently people care a lot more about Trump.

SuddsMcDuff··on Map of rail station usage in the UK: 1997 – 2015
It was interesting the see the number of stations being "upgraded" from small to medium & large. Certainly are a lot more large stations popping up in recent years.

I'd be curious to know what "large" means though. Is it just the passenger throughput or is it the number of platforms? It would be quite impressive if each of these size increases represents a major construction project.

SuddsMcDuff··on The Sega Saturn and Transparency
As I understood it, Sony provided some really nice C libraries in their SDK. While Sega initially expected developers to write games in assembly language.

Years later Sonic Team released SGL 2.0, a much nicer high level C API which showed the true potential of the Saturn, but it was too late to claw back the lead Sony had built up.

SuddsMcDuff··on If being too clean makes us sick, why isn’t getting dirty the solution?
Some people go to extreme lengths to implant beneficial flora into their gut... with, I kid you not, POO TRANSPLANTS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fecal_bacteriotherapy).

Seems like it's mostly done for medical reasons at the moment, but I could easily see this becoming a fad craze.

You can actually buy poo tablets, and become a poo donor. http://www.openbiome.org/

SuddsMcDuff··on UK government urged to use Bitcoin-style digital ledgers
I'm surprised there's been no mention yet of government transparency and accountability. This is one of the widely touted advantages of using a blockchain.

Another good example is George Galloway, who is running for mayor of London. He has committed to running the city's budget on a blockchain if he gets elected (he wont get elected but it's a nice idea) - https://www.startjoin.com/blockchain

SuddsMcDuff··on Why London Underground stopped people walking up the escalators
They should hand out medals at the top of Covent Garden stairs. It's like a badge of honour for Londoners.

Yes I put a U in honor.

Even making eye contact with a stranger is a faux-pas! That's why everyone pretends to read.

He didn't get his first stage role until 42. I think the point still stands.

SuddsMcDuff··on Project Rider – A C# IDE
It's the incredible bloat of the thing. It's weighed down so much by features that I do not want or need. I don't want SQL Server express & all the associated bloat that comes with that. I don't want IIS express and all the associated bloat that comes with that. I don't want freaking Entity Framework and its associated GUI designers. I don't want bloody "Blend for Visual Studio", I thought that crap was dead. I don't want TFS explorer - TFS is crap and everyone knows it, including Microsoft. I don't need a WPF designer UI, I don't need a WinForms designer UI. I certainly don't need a WebForms designer UI (shudder). All I want is a text editor that lets me write & debug code.
SuddsMcDuff··on Project Rider – A C# IDE
I couldn't disagree more, VisualStudio is a glorified text editor - there is absolutely no reason for its monumental system requirements. Microsoft have completely forgotten about the core functionality of the product - programmers writing code. Instead they've bloated the thing down with many, many 'features' which only detract from that core functionality.

If you look at something like Atom with the Omnisharp plugin, it achieves everything I need from VisualStudio with a tiny fraction of the resources. Then again, if you're one of these programmers who write more code by dragging & dropping around a UI than actually typing (Microsoft has created a whole generation of these coders), then you probably need a lot of the VisualStudio bloat.

SuddsMcDuff··on Project Rider – A C# IDE
I've been a .NET dev for over 10 years now, finally there's an alternative to the huge, monolithic, incredibly bloated Visual Studio, which I've grown to hate with a passion.

There have been contenders over the years, monodevelop, sharpdevelop, most recently the OmniSharp plugin with atom.io. This is the first time I can realistically see myself being free from VisualStudio in a professional context.

SuddsMcDuff··on Why Swift Guard Should Be Avoided
Agreed horizontal scrolling is equally disturbing. We do live in an age of wide-screen monitors though so I find vertical whitespace more precious. I would go as far as saying that 160 horizontal chars is a more sensible guide these days.
SuddsMcDuff··on Why Swift Guard Should Be Avoided
My general rule of thumb is that a function should be small enough to be entirely visible on screen without having to scroll. It's dependent on screen resolution & font size of course, but I find that having to scroll down adds some cognitive overhead to understanding the whole of a function.

Following this line of thought I've become a lot more precious about vertical whitespace & I've adopted BSD style curly braces.

SuddsMcDuff··on Why Swift Guard Should Be Avoided
All too often, in every stack, the language is blamed for design deficiencies which lie with the programmer.

I really don't get why BBC worldwide is restricted in the UK - they're telling us we can't view because we pay extra for content?
SuddsMcDuff··on Difficult Times at Our Credit Union

SuddsMcDuff··on MH17 Report
Thanks, I've read much of the report of course. What you notice about the report is that there's a tremendous focus on the build up to the attacks, the context and the aftermath, but it's very light on the technical analysis of the actual event that you would normally see in an air crash investigation - such as what we're now seeing with MH17. Admittedly the two events are hardly comparable, but I stand by my observation that there's a distinct disparity between the amount & quality of information that's being disseminated. There may be perfectly good reasons for that.
SuddsMcDuff··on MH17 Report
I see I'm being downvoted for this. I didn't mean to be controversial, just making an observation about the stark difference between the amount and quality of information that is being disseminated to the public.
SuddsMcDuff··on MH17 Report
I find it really fascinating that they've gone to such lengths to literally recreate a large portion of the plane from the wreckage in order to better understand what happened.

I can't help but think though, why weren't similar measures taken with Flight 93 (Pennsylvania, 2001-09-11) or Flight 77 (Pentagon, 2001-09-11)? I don't wish to allude to any of the many conspiracy theories, but I do find it interesting to see how a "real" crash investigation is done, as opposed to what we've been told about 9-11.
