SuddsMcDuff··on How is the Bun rewrite in Rust going?
> (now legend) Terry bothering us to check out LoseThos or GodOS or whatever was its name

Temple OS :)

SuddsMcDuff··on Postgres rewritten in Rust, now passing 100% of the Postgres regression tests
> So, who wants to put something like this in production?

I don't think anyone suggested deploying this to production - the author is quite explicit that it's an experiment.

SuddsMcDuff··on Pondering routing more of my traffic via nodes outside the UK
So many of the outrageous things the UK government is doing, which seem most inexplicable, can be explained by one simple principle - successive governments over the last 30 years have turned this nation into a tinderbox, the purpose of the state and the judiciary in particular has become singular in its effort to prevent a spark from igniting the whole thing. Though they will become ever more authoritarian and tyrannical in their efforts, defenders dilemma applies - eventually, inevitably, they will fail and all hell will break loose. Plan accordingly.
SuddsMcDuff··on 1worldflag: A blue dot on a transparent background
I expect there are many people who agree with this sentiment, unfortunately they might not agree on precisely which areas ought to be quarantined. And those who happen to live in the areas you want to quarantine might disagree most vigorously.

> It's just massively frustrating to see what humanity could accomplish if we weren't occupied bashing our heads in over religion, nationality, or color of skin.

Resenting the real world because it doesn't live up to your make-believe fantasy world is pathological. I too can imagine perfect utopian worlds where everybody lives in peace and harmony, but they're just fantasies. Eventually you have to come back to the real world and learn to accept the harsh truths of the reality you find yourself inhabiting.

I admit my post was slightly inflammatory & you could have responded very differently. I commend you for taking the high road.

I never knew that, and it is _really_ interesting! My DAW of choice (Bitwig) also based in Berlin...

> If you don't commit yourself to the database structures you defined at the time of application creation, then it just reflects poor planning

No it reflects the reality that requirements and applications evolve over time. You sound like someone who's never supported an application for more than 5 minutes.

> The UK does have a few right wing pro Russia people

"Right wing" people like George Galloway? Put your obvious bias aside for a moment and just say "a few pro Russia people".

SuddsMcDuff··on Malaysia enforces ban on social media accounts for children younger than 16
At first I thought this sounded implausible, but then I remembered we already have a second internet, largely isolated from the main internet - the darkweb.

This could equally illustrate the difference between long established multi national companies with an overbearing corporate culture vs young upstart companies with a dynamic startup culture.

That is an unhealthy level of contempt you have there.
SuddsMcDuff··on The surprising story behind the first British person in space
Same, I didn't recognise her name immediately, but that iconic image of her was seared into my childhood memory.
SuddsMcDuff··on The surprising story behind the first British person in space
I don't think it's as bad as all that. Personally, I always feel a little prick of national pride when I watch Space X launches and see that Goonhilly Earth Station (https://www.goonhilly.org/) has taken over tracking the rocket.

Funny this should show up today. Tomorrow evening (23rd of May), Helen Sharman is appearing at a live QA session at the National Space Centre - https://www.spacecentre.co.uk/whats-on/an-evening-with-helen...

It is sold out...

SuddsMcDuff··on Elon Musk has lost his lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI
Muddying the right of appeal with vexatious litigation is a very dark road to go down.

I'm sure people in the US are in no mood to take any advice from us here in the UK, having just recently abolished the right to a jury trial.

This guys comment history is absolutely wild! So utterly full of hate and ignorance. Amazing how often those two things go hand in hand.
SuddsMcDuff··on Details of the Daring Airdrop at Tristan Da Cunha
I know exactly what you mean. But for me there's an even greater emotion here... relief. At a time when everything feels so utterly divided, it's such a relief to see a positive story that everyone can celebrate and feel proud of, regardless of their stance. Better, it's a story that can't be politicised one way or the other, it has a purity about it. I think if we had more positive stories like this, our political & ideological differences wouldn't seem so all consuming.

I'd be more worried if words from that era were fully aligned with present day notions of morality. Wouldn't that indicate a certain stagnation & lack of progress?

Let us hope, 100 years from now, there will be people who look back unkindly on us.

SuddsMcDuff··on Show HN: Building a project based on universal income concept
Mystery and intrigue can be a good way to build hype. On this occasion I felt less intrigued, and more bewildered.

To play the intrigue angle, you should be very concise with the text. Three or four bullet points, a relase date, and a mailing list form. Nothing more.

Your site has quite a lot of text, but all of it dances around the core point without directly addressing it. If anything it made me slightly angry. I invested time reading all of your site, and really I had nothing to show at the end of it.

SuddsMcDuff··on UK government’s plans to regulate the internet are a threat to free speech
Saying that they're arguing for freedom from social consequences is a very black and white way of looking at things. They're not arguing for that at all. But they are pushing back, necessarily I would say, against those who seek to shut down and marginalize people who hold opinions they deem to be unworthy.

Without any resistance whatsoever from groups like the FSU, the social consequences you mention will tend to spiral into something quite ugly.

SuddsMcDuff··on UK government’s plans to regulate the internet are a threat to free speech
They're picking the side of those who are no-platformed. That's the point.

SuddsMcDuff··on Ask HN: How are you preparing for COVID-19 disruptions?
I think panic, chaos and social disruption are a more imminent threat than the virus itself at this point. As such I've stocked up on basic household food and supplies so that I don't have to go out into that chaos if it hits. The last thing I want is to be stuck in a huge queue at a petrol (gas) station, or getting punched out over the last turnip at the supermarket. Being prepared means I am one less person contributing to that chaos, one less person driving like a maniac on the roads desperately looking for toilet paper.
