SubGenius··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
The Rouse by China Miéville, great read so far.
SubGenius··on Ask HN: Who is the inspiration for your thinking?
Robert Anton Wilson.
SubGenius··on 7 Japanese Musicians That Influenced the World – Tokyo Weekender
This list is missing Masayoshi Takanaka!
SubGenius··on Italo Calvino: A traveller in a world of uncertainty
Marcovaldo, Cosmicomics, Difficult Loves are my favorite. Baron in the Trees too.

I'd definitely suggest starting with these. His short story work is beautiful.

SubGenius··on Why Zig Is Quietly Doing What Rust Couldn't: Staying Simple
Is this some kind of language wars engagement farming?

The OP submitted a post earlier titled "Zig Looked Like the Future – Until We Tried Multithreading" from the same blog.

What's going on?

SubGenius··on Ask HN: What books are you reading now?
I just finished rereading Lonesome Dove, again. Don't let the western theme fool you. It's quite possibly one of the best novels ever written. Every word, every character, every like of dialogue is crafted to perfection. It will leave you with a book hangover like nothing else.
SubGenius··on Limp Bizkit announces death of bassist Sam Rivers aged 48
Sad. The bassline on their song 'The One' is beautifully played.
SubGenius··on Cloudflare is sponsoring Ladybird and Omarchy
Great to see CF sponsoring Ladybird! One of the most important projects out there right now.

I run vanilla arch/i3, so not super interested in Omarchy itself - but am curious to know how polished of a distro they can come up with. I may give it a try soon.

SubGenius··on Best split ergo keyboard(with trackball) for engineers?
I use a zsa moonlander and a Kensington trackball, separately.

Just to be clear, I don't think ergo/split keyboards will necessarily help you type faster. They've been life-changing for me to help deal with nerve damage pain in my hands.

Although I do type noticably faster now, but that could just be due to reduced pain.

SubGenius··on LibriVox
I've enjoyed quite a few very well narrated audiobooks on LibriVox. The Jane Austen novels voiced by Karen Savage are phenomenal.
SubGenius··on Audiobooks vs. Printed Books: a debate as a reader and an author
I like David Thorpe too. George Guidall and John Lee are probably my favorite narrators. Jonathan Cecil narrating the Jeeves books is wonderful. So is Stephen Fry, but he's pretty much amazing in anything.
SubGenius··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)

SubGenius··on The Timeless Magic of Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities at 50
Calvino is amazing. His short story collection Marcovaldo is just brilliant, it's my personal favorite. Cosmicomics is great too. Well actually, all his work.

It would be worth learning the language to read Calvino in original Italian. And maybe even Umberto Eco.

SubGenius··on Narcissus and Goldmund
This is a beautiful book - his best work in my opinion. I haven't (re)read it in a while so this is a good reminder. There is a great audiobook version too.

SubGenius··on Siddhartha
I liked this quite a bit the first time I'd read it. A decade later, not as much.

Narcissus and Goldmund is my favorite book by Hesse - it's beautifully crafted.

SubGenius··on Don't make fun of renowned author Dan Brown (2013)
If you want the Snow Crash version of Da Vinci Code, then you might like The Illuminatus Trilogy. Robert Anton Wilson is something else. Umberto Eco's book Foucault's Pendulum is a slightly different vibe, but very entertaining read.
SubGenius··on The Severance writer and cast on corporate cults, sci-fi, and more
There's an Iron Maiden song inspired by that show and features a voice clip from it. It's called The Prisoner.
SubGenius··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
> ...when the Athenian Democracy voted to condemn Plato to death.

That was Socrates, not Plato.

Socrates was allowed to choose his own punishment too, so he wasn't exactly condemned to death right away. He also had the opportunity to escape prison. He chose not to.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2024?
Ukridge by PG Wodehouse. I hadn't really ventured out the Blandings/Jeeves/Psmith collections that much. Ukridge may be the funniest book I've ever read. He's also featured in another book 'Love Among the Chickens' - absolutely hilarious.
SubGenius··on Zakir Hussain, legendary tabla virtuoso who defied genres, dies at 73
Big fan of his work with Shakti/McLaughlin. RIP.
SubGenius··on What made Dostoevsky's work immortal
I believe those words are said by the elder Zosima in one of the early chapters when he has several visitors. Not Alyosha - although it's been several years since I've reread the book.
SubGenius··on Noam Chomsky has passed away
RIP to one of the greats.
SubGenius··on Dickey Betts, hit-crafting mainstay of Allman Brothers Band, dies at 80
Amazing album, not only the music but the recording/mix is just right - considering it's over half a century old at this point.

The long extended version of Whipping Post is something else!

SubGenius··on Dickey Betts, hit-crafting mainstay of Allman Brothers Band, dies at 80
Sad news. He wrote some of my favorite Allman Brothers tunes. 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed' is beautiful. 'Rambling Man' is another classic.

RIP.

> Other than The White Stripes, what popular bands have had clearly unskilled drummers?

I want to joke and say Lars from Metallica but I'd be lying. He was a decent drummer in the first couple albums.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: What are your oldest "online" accounts still in use?
I have a hotmail account from 2000. A wikipedia account from 2006! I don't remember when exactly Gmail was in early beta (2004?) but I did manage to register firstname@gmail.com and have used it since.

Also have a super early HN account that I no longer remember the password to. So...

SubGenius··on How Miles Davis hired John Coltrane
Every drummer, bassist and guitarist too! It's insane how so many of them later on went on to pioneer the fusion movement.

Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, Tony Williams, Marcus Miller and so on!

SubGenius··on “When you use a Walkman all the memories come back”: In love with old tech
Both Damnation and Deliverance are classic Opeth albums!

I've been trying to get back into the habit of listening to entire albums and have been mostly successful. Even when I search for a single track on Spotify I view the album first and listen all the way through. It's been enriching.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: What's your experience of learning to type?
My dad had something called Typing Teacher on his Windows 3.1 machine. I was too young to use it as a serious tool though. Learning to type "just happened" as an accidental side effect to using the computer all day long.

Same as you, I don't remember ever struggling with learning to type or anything. I could just do it.

More recently, I switched over to a Kinesis/Moonlander keyboard, so I had to put in actual effort to relearn to type. It wasn't as easy the second time around...
