SubGenius··on Ask HN: What music do you listen to
A lot of jazz fusion, jazz, classical music, all kinds of metal.

Stuff I'e been listening to a lot recently:

- Pat Martino

- Bill Frisell

- Allman Brothers Band

- Brian Blade, his album called Landmarks is an absolute religious experience

- Joshua Redman Quartet, with Brian Blade, Christian Mcbride, Brad Mehldau

- Oz Noy

- Symphony X, a lot of early Megadeth

I'm sort of a bedroom jazz/fusion guitarist too, so there's the usual guitar nerd stuff that's an everyday staple:

- Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Brett Garsed, Allen Hinds

- Older shred guitar music

I mostly share what I listen to on the platform I'm building too.

SubGenius··on Nietzsche on Truth and Lie (1991)
I watched all videos a while back. Really liked them. The 'Self Under Siege' series was my faovorite. The talks on Nietzsche were great too.
SubGenius··on Ask HN: What's your best purchase of this year?
I bought a Kinesis Advantage 2. My wrist/hand pain has disappeared completely. Still not typing as fast as I'd like to, but the lack of pain makes up for it. The onboard remaps and macros are amazing.
SubGenius··on Ask HN: Books You Read in 2020?
Perhaps a bit cliche, but I started on a "Great Russian novels" marathon at the start of the year and have read all of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy.

Brothers Karamazov was my favorite. I liked ''War and Peace too', and can somewhat understand why they call 'Anna Karenina' one of the best books ever written.

Just recently, I finished 'Doctor Zhivago', and 'Fathers and Sons', and 'The Master and Margarita'. I thought they were all brilliant.

Since the year is coming to and end, I hope to reread VS Naipaul's 'A House for Mr Biswas'. It's my favorite novel and I keep coming back to it again and again.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: Which Linux distro has the best UX these days?
Elementary[0] is probably what you're looking for. I did use Kubuntu for a number of years and liked it too.

https://elementary.io/

SubGenius··on Ask HN: Split keyboard/trackball for use while standing and hands at sides?
I did see a recent build on the mechanical keyboard subreddit where someone built exactly what you describe, with an Ergodox.

I have nerve damage in my hands from an accident and recently switched to a Kinesis Advantage 2. It's been amazing for me. Not exactly what you're looking for, but I got it after extensive research and it seems to be the best keyboard to get if you have RSI/injuries.

Kinesis has several split models too that are cheaper, maybe you could build a side-holstered version if you got one of those.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: Why does an article critical of Paul Graham get removed?
Unless you're suggesting some kind of conspiracy, the author most likely changed their mind and deleted it from their substack...
SubGenius··on Bob Dylan Sells Entire Catalog of Songs to Universal Music Publishing
He's still alive though. Doesn't it make more sense for IP to cease with the author/artist's passing?

I suppose one could argue that his early material has enough cultural significance that they should be in the public domain..

SubGenius··on Ask HN: Alternatives to HN for non-Hacker News?
Thanks! No it's a Svelte editor component based on Prosemirror. The editor is still a bit hairy around the edges, but working on getting it right. :)

I'm working on something that may interest you. It's still a work-in-progress, but we have communities (subreddits), publications/articles (medium), galleries, and normal user feeds. Emphasis on anonymity, custom domains, matrix integration, eventual federation.

SubGenius··on What's new in Svelte (Dec 2020)
Not yet, but it's on the roadmap. As soon as I've had time for better integration with Matrix, a bit of refactoring, and writing more tests!
SubGenius··on What's new in Svelte (Dec 2020)
I wanted the initial render to be fast, and Go templates really shine there. Since the site has a lot of moving parts, there are many components that get hydrated depending on the page. For instance, this page (https://gurlic.com) is generated by Go, but the actions such as like/dislike/share/respond are hydrated by their respective Svelte components. If you scroll all the way down, new posts are fetched and rendered with Svelte components too, and the great bit is that I can use the same action (like/dislike/etc) components there.

Maybe there's a better way to do it, but I like writing smaller components that can replace initial server-rendered HTML, and can then be imported into larger components.

SubGenius··on What's new in Svelte (Dec 2020)
I really like it. Replaced Vue with Svelte and things have been great so far. Smaller bundles, and much lighter components. Built-in state management is very handy.

The initial pages are Go templates which are hydrated with Svelte components. It took a bit of trial and error to get the flow right so that I don't have to write double the code.

I don't know if it's the next big thing or not but it works really well for me.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: Why don't we have widespread, decentralized social networking?
> What's more, I despise advertising and contact from individuals and corporations whose only interest in me is to extract value

I completely agree with you here. Despise is the exact word I would use to describe my feelings towards advertising.

> I'd say that most people, if given the choice not to have that in their social interactions[0] would choose control/lack of advertising/marketing overwhelmingly

Maybe it's just me being older and more cynical but I really don't think most people care about control either, at least not in large enough numbers to matter. I'd be happy to be wrong, of course.

> Unless, of course, your paycheck is contingent on such centralized platforms. Is yours?

Not at all. But I am building something in this space, with decentralization/anonymity as a priority. It is entirely possible for me to be in full support of a move towards decentralized services while accepting the reality that it's not important to most people. Pragmatism does not equal defeatism.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: Why don't we have widespread, decentralized social networking?
Because the average person wants to be where their friends are, and us something that just works. Modernity poses so many challenges that decentralization is meaningless to most "normal" people, whether through ignorance or lack of care.

More importantly, you seem to place a higher value on decentralization than centralization. Why is that? What if centralization allows more people express themselves more freely? Would you place a higher value on centralization?

Decentralization is a design choice, that's it. Unfortunately, we have to come to terms with the fact that outside the sphere of hackerdom and a select few privacy-conscious individuals, decentralization is completely and utterly irrelevant.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: How to Start a Developer Blog?
I'm looking for a handful of users to test Gurlic's article editor and publication setup. I'll throw in a free .COM (or equivalent) domain if you decide to blog on Gurlic.

Example post:

https://gurlic.com/homer/the-iliad-book-i

Custom domain post:

https://classics.wtf/the-iliad-book-ii

Publication:

https://classics.wtf

And the main site with communities/social:

SubGenius··on Ask HN: What are you interested in that the fewest others are interested in?
Yes I have. I did go through a heavy Yngiwe phase in my teens when I was trying to learn most of his music. I expect that you play the guitar too?
SubGenius··on Ask HN: What are you interested in that the fewest others are interested in?
I love Yngwie. His music got me into classical music, just like jazz fusion guitarists like Holdsworth got me into more traditional jazz.

Don't see a lot of new guitarists playing neoclassical guitar anymore, but that's okay I guess. Maybe someday Michael Romeo will release a half decent Symphony X record with some neoclassical licks, but I'm not holding my breath.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: What is your recent purchase that made your personal/work life better?
I was left with some nerve damage to my left hand after an accident a few years ago. I recently bought a Kinesis Advantage 2 ergonomic keyboard after. It's change my life. Haven't felt any pain or discomfort in my fingers/wrist in the past month that I've been using it...
SubGenius··on Hire people who give a shit
I mean, if we're being honest, even I don't "give a shit" about what I'm working on beyond building something fun/cool that enables me to make a living.

I want to hire someone who is good at what they do and brutally honest that they're taking the job because they need to feed themselves and take care of their loved ones and have enough free time left to finish their instrumental guitar record or whatever.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: Hashnode or Substack for an open tech blog?
If you want to use/test Gurlic, I'll throw in a free .COM (or equivalent) domain for you.

Here's an example:

https://gurlic.com/homer/the-iliad-book-i

Custom domain:

https://classics.wtf/the-iliad-book-i

SubGenius··on Ask HN: Buy highly priced domain or rebrand?
Use another name. Most names are fine as long as they're relatively short, memorable and pronounceable.

That money could be put to better use.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: What is to Reddit, as Reddit was to Digg?
Thanks, I will!
SubGenius··on Ask HN: What is to Reddit, as Reddit was to Digg?
I'm building Gurlic. Wouldn't want to call it the next reddit, though.

SubGenius··on Ask HN: What would you suggest one learns during this Pandemic?
Some ideas:

- A musical instrument

- Something with your hands

- Something that teaches self-control and patience, maybe try intermittent fasting, or a martial art

- A lazy and zen activity, maybe fishing

SubGenius··on Principia Discordia (2004) [pdf]
My favorite bit from PD:

"Before he became a hermit, Zarathud was a young Priest, and took great delight in making fools of his opponents in front of his followers.

One day Zarathud took his students to a pleasant pasture and there he confronted The Sacred Chao while She was contentedly grazing.

"Tell me, you dumb beast." demanded the Priest in his commanding voice, "why don't you do something worthwhile. What is your Purpose in Life, anyway?"

Munching the tasty grass, The Sacred Chao replied "MU".

Upon hearing this, absolutely nobody was enlightened. Primarily because nobody could understand Chinese."
