I don't see why it wouldn't work. Matrix is a solid protocol to work with. The only thing I want to be careful about is ensuring that the UI has none of the weirdness usually found in decentralized apps.
That entire album is outrageously good.
Not to mention everything else - privacy, state surveillance, network effects.
If there's free choice, I don't see the general population ever choosing a state-funded network over private ones.
One way to do it is for the state to take significant control over an existing private network. Another way to do it for an authoritarian state to block all networks and make it mandatory for citizens to use the state-funded network.
I feel like the timing is almost right, with all the emerging technologies from the past few years (matrix, fediverse etc) just reaching stability.
For eg:
All exif/metadata is stripped, but there is a bit of compression. I think I'll allow high-res images if people care enough to use it. I should implement pasting/dropping images too. Didn't think of that before..
We have articles too (with an editor and everything):

And publications as well, but this needs a lot more work:
I suppose the focus on tech/code and lack of political content dissuaded them completely. Good!
I'm happy John Mclaughlin is still playing. Here's a song from a couple weeks ago you might like!
- Pick up a lazy hobby that involves a whole lot of doing nothing
- Learn some Iron Maiden songs all over again
- Play with Zig and Nim
- Learn Go (the game)
My current dev machine has been running ArchLinux + i3-gaps for a couple of years now. Very solid, and not a single update screwup so far.
That's not accurate though, is it? Unless you're exaggerating for effect.
I don't think most people on HN are against non-free products at all. I think they're against products that provide little value compared to their price.
There may also be some general exhaustion from so many products moving to a subscription model, instead of an old-fashioned one-off purchase. $9/month may not seem a lot, but it quickly adds up.
If there's more censorship at the payment layer, I don't see how crypto will be left alone.
Does this mean that in addition to Facebook, you too will have access to user data? How exactly does this work?
Really depends on how much Wordpress you know. If you're just using it as a CMS, then you should probably stick with it.
If you're familiar with PHP and JS, there are other CMS you could switch to. Though you'll not find the same ecosystem of plugins and tooling.
