StephenConnell··on One Dollar Glasses – Help for 150M people
I have found purchasing glasses can be hit or miss weather I buy $600 glasses or less that twenty dollar glasses. I may miss a bit more with cheap glasses, but I can take a lot more shots.

I've used zennioptical.com and it has worked really well. I've run into frames that do not fit, but they were cheap mistakes and once I found something I liked, I just reorder every few years.

Paying attention to the frame measurements is pretty important if you buy online.

StephenConnell··on How Stable Are Democracies? ‘Warning Signs Are Flashing Red’
Good point, but I appreciate the scant coverage on HN.
StephenConnell··on Auto Safety Regulators Seek a Driver Mode to Block Apps
That's not a big change. Don't you already reach way down below the windows so other drivers and police can't see you are using your phone?
StephenConnell··on Quick, Draw
I was asked to draw: brush I drew a hair brush. It was trained to see brush as a bunch of circles or trees.
StephenConnell··on Canada's immigration website crashes on election night
For the price if a 1 bedroom apartment in San Francisco you could buy a 4 bedroom house in northern California. (3+ hr drive north of SF)
StephenConnell··on LessPass: sync-less open source password manager
I agree with you and will not be using this tool. but it does seem like a good tool for those that do not want to use a password manager. (better than nothing for sure)

The attacker would have to know that you are using this tool, and they would have to know what you input for the site name and your username/password. So basicly you have three passwords for each site.

StephenConnell··on Nyancat on the touchbar
Ha, well said!

I have grown to love the touch screen on my Chromebook pixel. Felt awkward to reach at first, but a non touch screen now feels really awkward. Not that the touch screen replaces all interaction, there are some things that are faster on the keyboard, touch pad, or touch screen.

That said, touching other people's screens is not polite.

With regards to the touch bar, seems like you could use software in combination with the existing touchpad and screen to do something similar. Reserve the top edge of the touch pad, on touch a menu pops up, slide to select or something...

StephenConnell··on GoPro shows its vulnerability after horrific Q3 earnings
Same here. Audio queues only. No one wants to wait for you to get your camera in the right mode or pair... Not to mention battery life of the remote and the camera. I have never gotten the remote to work on an actual trip. Only while testing at home.
StephenConnell··on Instagram trademark application for “GRAM”
So, do they own the word Google? Can you use that name in other categories? Google plumbing?
StephenConnell··on [dead]
Sounds like the author was expecting a bit to much from the assistant software that comes with the phone and judged the entire phone based on that.

The article was mostly a rant about software.

StephenConnell··on Response from Google Tech Lead, Re: “Google May Be Stealing Your Mobile Traffic”
Good question, in 2010 Google said that they "... today we're including a new signal in our search ranking algorithms: site speed. Site speed reflects how quickly a website responds to web requests." [1]

I believe that page speed is also important, google provides PageSpeed Insights to help you improve your site. [2]

StephenConnell··on Response from Google Tech Lead, Re: “Google May Be Stealing Your Mobile Traffic”
True, but Google knows where you are and could test the site from that general region. It would cause additional overhead for Google but may be worth it.

Page render speed is just as important as server speed. A website bloated with ads is what I object to the most, or any type of pop over that obstructs the content.

StephenConnell··on Response from Google Tech Lead, Re: “Google May Be Stealing Your Mobile Traffic”
If hacker news had a speed rating next to the links I would probably click on them more instead of just reading the comments to decide if it's worth pulling up an article.

Note, It has been suggested that a speed rating on Google would be equivalent to the amp experience with less Google control.

StephenConnell··on Never accept a counter-offer
Your personal time is worth more than any number of $$$. You can't buy back your time after you've traded it for cash. Make sure you enjoy life while you have it.

Edit: My point is that freelance work income may not compare, but the income may not be the reason for moving to freelance. The op did not explain why he moved to freelance, but I can think of some great reasons to do so.

StephenConnell··on Logo Pizza: Hot and ready logos for sale
Road signs in California for weigh stations will say something like: this lane, trucks only (no puckups). Car is used to mean either in most conversations, so I knew what you meant. I liked your analogy and found humor in the fact that the answer to your question was in a way hidden in your question. I intended to answer your question and share the humor I found but I was short on time and instead my comment looks snarky.

In any case, good point.

StephenConnell··on Logo Pizza: Hot and ready logos for sale
He would not buy a car.
StephenConnell··on Everyday ‘Placebo Buttons’ Create Semblance of Control
How a light works can change also. Sometimes it will fall back on a dumb rotation if the sensors are not working.

Also it may make sense to rely on sensors/buttons when there are few people, but once your city gets too big and has constant foot traffic, fixing the sensors may not be worth it.

StephenConnell··on Most of us would be better off without lawns
That does sound nice though I am tied to California by family. I have a 10 min drive to my office, but I would like to move my office closer when possible.
StephenConnell··on Most of us would be better off without lawns
I have a fairly large lawn in Northern California as well. We enjoy it thoroughly. The kids and I play on it daily and camp on it as well. My water bill was about $170 last month but that was the peak. Most of the year it's under $100 and in the winter months it's about $20 per month (I did not irrigate for 4 months last winter). Not all of California is an overpopulated desert using imported water.

On the other hand, having a lawn at other times in my life did seem to just need to be mowed all the time and still looked bad.

StephenConnell··on Gchat Was the Future of Messaging, but Google Didn’t Know
No kidding. Especially annoying when using Google Maps and driving a stick shift.
StephenConnell··on Ask HN: Why does a pizza app know my location and 911 doesn't?
My android s6 active has pocket dialed 911 a handful of times in the past month. I called dispatch to apologize, they took down my info and confirmed my address. They were only a couple of houses off. Not too bad.

I must say I hate the emergency button on the stock lock screen, and how glitchy replacement lock screens are.

StephenConnell··on Thermal camera footage allegedly shows pro cyclists using motors
Wouldn't that be more work than just inspecting the bikes?
StephenConnell··on Keeping secrecy the exception, not the rule
Good for them. Sounds well thought out.
StephenConnell··on CaptionBot by Microsoft
My photos did not do too well. My Coral looks like a cake, my lizard looks like a bird, my boy fishing looks like a man next to a river, and a waterfall looks like a close up of Rock.
StephenConnell··on My Biggest Regret as a Programmer

StephenConnell··on Patent that cost Microsoft millions gets invalidated
Interesting, now that you mention it, I see how it could mean what you thought. When I first read it, I read the correct meaning.
StephenConnell··on Golden Rules for Making Money (1880)
A couple more definitions from Google. Charity: voluntary giving of help, typically in the form of money, to those in need. Stealing: to take without permission

I am an advocate for charity. But redistribution through taxation feels like stealing to me.

StephenConnell··on Golden Rules for Making Money (1880)
If prosperity is "having wealth", then redistributing wealth does bring prosperity. But then you could also say that stealing brings prosperity. Could you not?
StephenConnell··on Ask HN: How much do you make at Amazon? Here is how much I make at Amazon
I run my dirt bikes trials tire at about 10 psi rear, and 14 front. Mountain bike tubeless 14-25 psi. So I guess my question was, is a guage measurement above atmospheric pressure? The answer is yes. [0] "Gauge Pressure: The pressure of a system above atmospheric pressure."
