SippinLean··on Lessons from Building and Scaling Reddit's Ad Serving Platform with Go
It looks like it's made to appear as much like non-ad content as it possibly can while still maintaining plausible deniability on your part.

We stopped advertising on reddit after the rise of the_donald and other white supremacy subs led to our ads being placed next to a lot of bigotry and white supremacist content, even in subreddits you'd generally consider innocuous. The hate groups have spilled over into most subs now.

Time Warner Cable the company no longer exists. It was acquired by Charter Communications.

Time Warner Cable the internet brand also no longer exists. It was rebranded as Spectrum (Charter's existing brand).

SippinLean··on Crypto’s $600B Crash Hits a New Low
>comments that are considered valuable are voted up

I don't believe you're naive enough to believe this is the whole truth.

If you are, take a look at this thread, where the parent comment (that you compared to other irrelevant comments) is the most upvoted.

SippinLean··on Crypto’s $600B Crash Hits a New Low
>How would the share size impact the SEC's decision in this regard?

Critical to the SEC's decision is investor access to the products, so that less knowledgeable investors are protected from unsound investments.

A higher share price restricts access to wealthier investors, the type that meet the SEC’s requirements for accredited investors.

That is just one difference between this ETF and the Winklevoss one, you were unaware of it (and the implications) but still regarded VanEck as not "special," further highlighting how pointless generic "Bitcoin = bad" comments are on threads about specific topics.

SippinLean··on Crypto’s $600B Crash Hits a New Low
You're comparing the parent comment to other irrelevant comments elsewhere, in implicit agreement with me.

This article is about a specific ETF. How many people upvoting the parent comment understand that, say, the Winklevoss ETF was set to 0.01 BTC per share, whereas VanEck set each share at 25 BTC (which is something special); let alone the implications of such a difference?

I think it's been established on HN that Bitcoin = bad, we don't need to regurgitate the point on every thread about it. I come here for nuanced discussion, if I wanted black and white thinking I'd be reading plebbit.

SippinLean··on Crypto’s $600B Crash Hits a New Low
I'm aware. What makes the parent comment particularly relevant to VanEck's ETF vs all other threads about Bitcoin?
SippinLean··on Crypto’s $600B Crash Hits a New Low

SippinLean··on Crypto’s $600B Crash Hits a New Low
Cool.

What does that have to do with the SEC postponing its decision on whether to approve VanEck's ETF backed by Bitcoin, specifically?

That isn't an example of OCD. Perhaps OCPD but generally just seeking order.
SippinLean··on Why Paying for Stuff Is So Complicated Now
Complicated even more by shopper loyalty programs.

Following Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods, now checking out involves an extra step: the cashier asks every patron "Are you a Prime member?"

Then a number of things can happen. Worst case scenario: they are a Prime member but haven't installed the Whole Foods app on their phone. Then they are encouraged to find and download the app, install it, open it, find their login info and enter it, then bring up their unique barcode on their phone for the cashier to scan. In high-volume stores this adds ages to wait time.

Another retailer near me (Uniqlo) also has an app-based loyalty program and I've experienced the same delays there.

SippinLean··on Show HN: The Vue.js Handbook – Free 120 pages ebook
Thanks, this looks helpful. If you have a friend who's a native English speaker you might ask them to read it over for you. There's some awkward phrasing and tenses used throughout (I'm guessing you're European). Not complaining about free education, just trying to be constructive.

It's an advertisement for Eero and (a competitor) Google Wifi? One that calls out their comparatively high price? One that does not disclose itself as an advertisement? Seems like that would go against their own advertising policy:

SippinLean··on Ask HN: Which books have made you introspect?
Mason & Dixon by Thomas Pynchon. A review on Goodreads sums up the introspective qualities quite well:

>it is a loping colloquy between Faith and its mate Reason, Free Will and its mate Fate; I read in it that I should make my way West to go with the day, with Time, maturation, aging, having children, the coming of the next generation, the slow fading and dispersal at sunset- and East if I wish to go against the day, into the past, toward morning, the smokeless altars of memory, to youth… where we can’t ever stay for long, because the terrain has started to go missing, there is less firm land under foot to hold and lift us, and our Lines must again resume their inexorable Westerly course...

SippinLean··on Fonts for Complex Data
This article is more about typographic considerations for charts, not replacing graphics.

Chartwell is a neat hack made by clever people, but on the web we should eschew icon fonts. Your interface should not rely on custom typefaces making it to and being displayed by your visitor's browser.

SippinLean··on New WebKit Features in Safari 11.1
>WebKit in Safari now supports loading H.264 encoded MP4 video with an HTML tag.

I was confused by this sentence, but it actually says "HTML <IMG> tag" (the "<IMG>" part of the text is unescaped, and does not render). Meaning you can use <img src="video.mp4">

"But we already have <video> and animated webP and..." is addresed in depth in the linked article: https://calendar.perfplanet.com/2017/animated-gif-without-th...
