Sander_Marechal··on There is even more to the Google Pixel 4a's battery update
I wonder if Google is forced to disclose the reasons for this change in a different jurisdiction like the EU
Sander_Marechal··on Ask HN: How do you prevent the impact of social media on your children?
I've walked out of plenty of places to deal with my kid being frustrated. And sometimes we're in a restaurant for the first time in months and he's getting bored and antsy after an hour and a half and we'll put up some Bluey on my phone while we finish off desert. You win some, you loose some.
Sander_Marechal··on Standard patterns in choice-based games (2015)
> A movie will be able to deliver its stories a lot better than a game.

I don't agree. Something like SOMA would just be a generic sci-fi B-movie but it's an awesome game, even though there's no real choice and is in essence just a walking simulator.

I'm 45 and wondering if I should be offended by this....

I tried it for a year or so, then I moved everything to zigbee2mqtt and a slae.sh CC2652 stick (https://slae.sh/projects/cc2652/). I had a lot of problems with deCONZ / Conbee II dropping messages and losing devices, forcing me to reset, re-pair and re-configure every few weeks (specifically my Hue lights). The new stick and zigbee2mqtt has been flawless so far (18 months)

Sadly there's no AAA equivalent to the simple old square Tradri 0/1 on/off dimmer switches that use the cr2032 batteries. Those old switches are small enough that I could 3D print brackets to mount them in my standard wall covers. The newer AAA devices are all much bigger or try to do too many things.

A battery detection automation really helps with the maintenance (even for AA/AAA): https://community.home-assistant.io/t/low-battery-notificati...

I think it can, if you run your Docker containers in host network mode. I run my HA in docker using host mode, and it auto-detects all new devices that pop up on my network.
Sander_Marechal··on Phishers Love New TLDs Like .shop, .top and .xyz
Yes they can. They did it before after the Soviet Union broke up and they kept the .su TLD. It's still active. I'd argue that keeping around .io is more important than keeping .su around, seeing how many people and businesses use .io domains.

Sander_Marechal··on RFC 35140: HTTP Do-Not-Stab (2023)
That's nonsense. It's not about the cookies, it's about the data collection. You can use cookies without having to use a cookie banner by simply not gathering data you don't need. And if you do gather that data without using cookies you still need to ask for consent.

Sander_Marechal··on HTML Form Validation is underused
If my entire application used YYYY-MM-DD everywhere, it can be very confusing for users when the input suddenly uses something else. And often the locale or system settings are incorrect anyway. When I an working on a Dutch site with a Dutch locale and lang settings, then dates should be shown according to the Dutch locale, not according to whatever system of browser locale there is.

I always keep my OS and browser in English (makes searching for error messages sooo much easier) but I hate that I need to change my OS settings just to get Firefox to display the date in a proper way on some site.

Sander_Marechal··on HTML Form Validation is underused
Even 'required' doesn't work properly. Browsers do very odd and inconsistent things when your required field is hidden when submitting. Like in a basic tabbed or multi-step form.

Get a better password manager? I use Bitwarden and it has never failed to fill out the login forms for me.
Sander_Marechal··on HTML Form Validation is underused
The native date input is terrible. Not the actual native control, which is usually okay, but the field itself. You can't even format the date! That's the number one reason I always use some datepicker library in combination with a regular text input.

Sander_Marechal··on The True Weight of Medieval Weapons – Fact and Fiction
Serious answer: They are for opening up blocks of pike men. You use the 2 handed swords to destroy the pikes and/or push them aside, then send your guys with short swords into the gap to destroy the pike block from the inside.
Sander_Marechal··on The True Weight of Medieval Weapons – Fact and Fiction
A decent well made plate armour is a lot less than than. 15-ish kilo, so 30-ish lbs?
Sander_Marechal··on The True Weight of Medieval Weapons – Fact and Fiction
Like replica swords, replica armour is also often too heavy. Especially maille (the correct term for chainmail). Proper maille has the rings riveted closed so you can use thin rings. Many cheap replicas use bent (butted) rings. They need to be thicker so they don't bend open.

I have a full hauberk which goes to my knees with long sleeves. It weighs 6-ish kilo. Add a kilo for the coif. A decently made late medieval full plate armour is maybe 15-ish kilo complete with helmet. The heaviest armours are probably late 14th century armours. They are essentially an almost full plate over a (partial or full) maille hauberk. Some are maybe 25 kilo. That's still a lot less than the 40 or so kilo that modern soldiers lug around.

Did they? A lot of then were barely used, got damaged or vandalized, etc. And when the companies folded or communities outlawed the scooters, they end up as trash. I don't believe for a second that the amount of pollutants and greenhouse gasses saved by usage is larger than the amount produced by manufacturing, shipping and trashing all those scooters.
