Rannath··on Blocklist/Passlist Instead of Blacklist/Whitelist. Discuss
Except it doesn't make sense. Unlike the master/slave... thing, blacklist/whitelist has a VERY well defined meaning. Blacklist is the closest English term to the computing concept. You're also asking us to fragment our terminology, change client-facing apis, and potentially put thousands of man hours into retrofit these changes. What's the benefit?
Rannath··on Smart Algorithms beat Hardware Acceleration for Large-Scale Deep Learning
Simplify normalization if you want a layman's terms.
Rannath··on Ask HN: It's impossible to stop someone from downloading a stream, correct?
It is improbable to the point of impossibility, and somewhat worse than you've outlined.

To stop just me a device/service that prevented dling a stream would need:

-strong end-to-end encryption, otherwise you'd just grab the packets to recreate the stream, then save it.

-to be self contained, otherwise you'd just grab the stream from the audio/video output.

-to be tamper-proof, otherwise you'd just bypass the software by messing with the hardware.

Rannath··on Rocket League left behind on macOS and Linux due to DirectX 11 shift
No clue. I was making an educated guess. I was stuck with DX9 for a while because I wanted some stuff to run under wine. I switched to opengl nearly... 6 years ago now? Didn't realize it had been that long.
Rannath··on Rocket League left behind on macOS and Linux due to DirectX 11 shift
AFAIK: The way DX9 works for Windows software running under Wine, is that wine has a layer that intercepts all DX9 calls and retranslates them into OpenGL. There is no equivalent for DX11.
Rannath··on Ask HN: How to Work at a Bad Job?
Spend a week, or two living on poverty wages. You'll be very motivated to work just about any job.
Rannath··on Ask HN: What Happened to the Monarch CPU Project?
Is that not just an FPGA?
Rannath··on Whay are some people so successful and others less so?
Luck. You need both the opportunity, and the know-how to be successful. The next Einstein won't do anything if his family can't afford an education.
Rannath··on Ask HN: How should a 60-year-old get started with programming?
Pick your passion. Start with tutorials. RTFM. You need to work through a project.
Rannath··on Ask HN: How to get better at taking notes?
1) use something like teeline shorthand, or just record the meeting. This will allow you to keep up with the meeting. I generally use short hand, recording makes people nervous and doesn't always get everyone anyways, unless you have a really nice mic. I try to keep a complete record of the meeting, instead of picking and choosing what to write down. After a while it becomes second nature and you can get away with barely paying attention to your note-taking.

2) after the meeting convert your shorthand into some organized, clean notes. This helps you solidify your understanding and allows you to make decisions after you have all the information. You might want to keep your shorthand around for your record, at least for a bit.

3) decide, immediately after 2, what you're going to do about those notes, and when. I use an app that shows me specific notes at specific times. If something is priority I do it immediately, or have an app remind me in an hour/day. If I'm waiting on someone, I note that, and set a reminder to check back in. If I need to keep an eye on something I set a reminder to check on it.

4) When notes expire (and they always do eventually), they get emailed to me at home. Once a day a script zips them and sticks them out of the way. I manually move them onto a flash stick once a month.

NB: This is a habit I picked up in college, and modified for work. I wrote my unnamed note app myself, it's not on any marketplace.

Rannath··on David Brooks: Impeach Trump. Then Move On
Thank you for identifying yourself. Can you tell us how you became fake news? What decisions led to you spreading falsehoods?
Rannath··on “If women get paid less than men why don't employers hire only women?”
Assuming men did make more (they don't), here are some reasons you might prefer, or have to hire a man: Men do tend to work longer hours. They also tend to be willing to take on greater risk. There are some fields that are >99.9% men (Ex: garbage men). That type of sexual discrimination in hiring might be illegal.

However: Women don't actually make less than men. Old men make more than old women. Young women make more than young men. Last I looked the break even point was 35. Both times I heard about a salary adjustment with an aim to combat discrimination it benefited men more than women. That might be an availability bias though.

Rannath··on Ask HN: What do you think about C++ 20?
Modules: hopeful

Concepts: finally

other language features: nice

library features: okay

what was left out: I have to wait ANOTHER three years for reflection?

ABI: just break it already, cowards.

overall: how long 'til I get it?

Rannath··on What the Uber Eats delivery drone looks like
That was a terrible pun have a point.
Rannath··on U.N. Scientists Think They Can Halt Global Warming for $300B. Here's How
Plant native flora, as well as trees and other deep root flora to keep salt levels down and retain water. Targeted fertilizer and pesticide use (reduce wastage).

We can also quadruple cattle, and rotate grazing land, to simulate the vast herds we wiped out.

Rannath··on Ask HN: Never been fired, what should I know before I fire someone?
Be respectful, even after they're gone, your employees should know that even if you let them go you'll treat them with some level of respect. Your team might already knows this person is under-performing.

It's a sad thing to fire someone, or be fired. Let it be a sad thing, but do what's necessary.

If you give them a reasonable chance to improve, you should feel free to let them go. I'd probably give someone a month to improve, or find another job. Resources allowing.

Is it spontaneous?
Rannath··on Young infants with temperature higher than 400 °C are at increased risk for SBI
I'm fairly certain an infant at 400°C has bigger problems than SBI.
Rannath··on Can We Make a 3-D Map of the Whole World?
We already have. At least Microsoft did for the newest MFS
Rannath··on Can We Make a 3-D Map of the Whole World?
The newest Microsoft Flight Simulator is using data like this to populate the entire planet. That's a major improvement over the previous version (2006), which procedurally generated anything outside a major city. It's so good that it's being touted as a potential fix to the pilot shortage.
Rannath··on Ask HN: How to get past your wife's past?
Good news: People can usually get over anything, in time. Give it a bit before you do anything drastic. It should bother you less and less as time goes on, even if you don't do anything else.

You almost certainly want to do something else to help. Talk to someone, professionally if needed. If your work/community/whatever has a crisis centre, this is what they're for.

It might be a risk depending on where you work, but tell your boss/client you might take a bit longer at whatever you're doing. Unless you have a hard deadline you can usually get some leniency at work, provided you've been there a while and don't abuse their compassion.

Rannath··on What's the best way to learn how to use a software?
Pick a project. Work through that project using free tutorials. Only pay if you can't get info for free. You can always get info for free.
Rannath··on Dr Sarah E. Hill: ‘A blind spot about how the pill influences women’s brains’
Every similar male options has, sadly, been far, far worse. I'd love a pill to render me temporarily sterile. Sadly the required chemistry seems to be... suicidal for men.
Rannath··on [dead]
Because people will take any opportunity to preach.
Rannath··on Ask HN: When do you think smartphones will become obsolete?
A smart phone is just a programmable computer welded to a cell phone, that's here to stay. So I'm going to answer what I think your real question is: "When will smartphones change form factor?"

The current form factor is a best-we-have compromise between ease of use, and utility. I think the next big thing will be the decoupling of utility and ease of use. AR/3D gesture tech in a discrete google glass-like thing maybe.

Rannath··on Is PHP Dead or Alive?
Yes.
Rannath··on Ask HN: Why does Windows feel more responsive than macOS?
Could be any number of things, in order of likelihood:

-Your Mac needs some tlc.

-Microsoft has been putting major effort into responsiveness lately.

-Apple isn't putting much/any effort into MacOS

-You're seeing a problem that isn't there.

-Gremlins

Rannath··on X-ray technique can reverse-engineer an entire chip without damaging it
This will make that easier. AND we can do it non-destructively. That means we get more, & rarer chips, instead of only the common stuff.
Rannath··on X-ray technique can reverse-engineer an entire chip without damaging it
Personally I was thinking of being able to recreate some discrete chips with breadboards.

Then again MOSIS has prices down to a few thousand/square millimeter. Since current gen stuff is so much smaller, that's probably <$100 for the more complex chips from the 70s, & 80s.

The best I think we'll get is some Amiga/Commodore build it yourself kits That weren't possible before because of out-of-production chips.

Rannath··on X-ray technique can reverse-engineer an entire chip without damaging it
I just want this to be cheap enough so that we can archive and re-create no-longer manufactured chips.
