Rainymood··on Launch HN: Athens Research (YC W21) – Open-Source Roam Research
Isn't there this saying that goes like: "If you invent something you basically have a 2-year headstart? Don't worry about getting copied because you will"

Good luck... looking forward to using Athens as a paying Roam user.

Rainymood··on On Writing More
I find her articles a bit too long and flowery as well, but I personally enjoyed reading the first story. And for some reason people on HN seem to like it.
Rainymood··on A Warning to Users of NurseryCam
(Tried to re-write your intro article a bit for ... you know ... a non-technical audience.)

# Summary

Let me get straight to the point.

If you (or your daycare) uses NurseryCam, ANYONE CAN SPY ON YOUR CHILDREN.

Let me repeat that.

If you (or your daycare) uses NurseryCam, ANYONE CAN SPY ON YOUR CHILDREN. ANYONE.

Hi, my name is John Doe and I'm a cyber-security consultant who specialises online video security.

NurseryCam is a camera system that is installed in nurseries, allowing parents to view their children remotely. There are tens of nurseries stating that they use this system. News articles go back as far as 2004.

The problem is that NurseryCam's system contains serious security issues. The worst part is that NurseryCam is lying about it. NurseryCam were informed of these as early as February 2015 – 6 years ago and still haven't done anything to fix them. These issues would allow any parent, past or present, to access the video feeds from the nursery. There is also the chance that anyone on the Internet could have accessed them.

So if you use NurseryCam, anyone can spy on your children. Do you really want that?

If you are a concerned parent now, please do not hesitate to reach out to me on john@doe.com.

If you want more technical details, keep reading on down below.

Rainymood··on Statement on New York Times Article
What a wild ride. Made me lose a lot of respect for the NYT and gained much respect for Scott for handling it like this.
Rainymood··on Ask HN: What is your biggest struggle right now?
My girlfriend breaking up with me. Hah! Probably not the answer you expected didn't you!
Rainymood··on Reddit valued at $6B on a $250M round
Reddit is going to turn into the next Facebook.
Rainymood··on The Great Unbundling
How do you make the colours, do you have some automation for that or is it all manual?
Rainymood··on Reddit is buying TikTok rival Dubsmash
venture capital at work ... I hate that I have to click to old.reddit.com, it's like they try to force me with everything they have to use the new reddit which I hate.
Rainymood··on How much I made as a good Engineer at Facebook
As an EU engineer this ... pains me ... because how true it is ... please tell me about the promised land
Rainymood··on I Hired a Freelance Editor for My Blog (2017)
Interesting piece on Overwatch. Never expected to see a danluu and Overwatch crossover. I am an ex-top 500 player in Overwatch. When I think back on it to become really really good (top 500 good) you need to just grind it out and win more than 50% of your games. Then, in the long run (I played thousands of games) you will become the best. You just have to improve and keep grinding. Every game should learn you a new lesson which you should apply to your next one. That's how I became top 500 :)
Rainymood··on Why I teach vim
Why I started to use Vim 5 years ago. I was coding a lot and I realised most of my work was editing code as text. So I figured, why not become really freaking good at it? Vim has a steep learning curve because it's a mental paradigm shift. I personally would recommend it to everyone because although no-code is taking off, most of the developers are still editing text. Sharpen that saw!
Rainymood··on Start with pen and paper
While I agree with this I also find tremendous value sometimes in slowing down, forcing me to think before I write something down exactly because of the high cost of writing. It makes every word more valuable. I can type a lot of junk really really fast...
Rainymood··on Clean Code – Notes
Does one need to eat the whole pie to tell how the pie tastes? What if we are talking about baking an apple pie ;)?
Rainymood··on Oregon hospital shuts down computer system after ransomware attack
The only good thing from this is that hospitals are waking up to the dangers of having weak digital security. Sadly this is the only way of having people invest more in security...
Rainymood··on Shopify – How We Get Shit Done [video]
Really cool video, but really long-winded. It literally is just a demo of their internal work-tracking tool called, Vault. Honestly, I did not learn that much about how "Shopify gets shit done."

The most important points:

- Shopify uses an internal tool called Vault to track work

- Projects > Tasks. Teams > People.

- Project timelines/lifecycles can be split up into three phases: think, explore, build

- Feedback is important but depends on which phase you are in (think, explore, build)

There, I just saved you 16 minutes.

Sorry for this snarky response but I really hoped I would've learned more in these 16 minutes.

Rainymood··on Forklift truck drivers who never leave their desks
Getting a really "training your replacement" vibe from this ... if you can do it from behind your desk, someone can do it from another desk ... perhaps I'm too cynical?
Rainymood··on Animation of how bridges were built in Central Europe in the Middle Ages [video]
This really blew my mind when I saw it for the first time. It still blows my mind. Amazing.
Rainymood··on We Tested Comma AI's OpenPilot
We are all standing on the shoulders of giants to be honest.
Rainymood··on The persecution of the Uyghurs is a crime against humanity
I am very vocal about this in my inner circle, but what can I, as a single developer in Europe, do to help?
Rainymood··on Loss of smell could be a 'highly reliable indicator' of Covid-19, research says
Same happened to me. No cold, runny nose, or any problems with airways. But my smell was just gone. I literally ground up basil and garlic and stuck it up my nose... nothing.
Rainymood··on Randomized Living
Very very cool, but at the same time it feels like we are so privileged sometimes that we are able to do this kind of stuff... Made me feel a bit melancholy and grateful at the same time.
Rainymood··on I built an app to fix my depression
Website seems down. Have you ever heard of Quirk or Daylio? I use Daylio to track my daily moods and that also helps a lot...
Rainymood··on Netflix boss: Remote working has negative effects
Coming to the office once a week on friday made me realise how starved I was for social connection.
Rainymood··on Ask HN: What book(s) changed your life?
I agree. I got very close to shaving a lot of yaks when I just wanted to write faster blog posts. I wanted to improve my blog writing workflow by seamlessly pasting images from my clipboard to my .md file (which jekyll turns into a blog).

I was on the verge of writing my own plugin for that. Then I took a step back, took a deep breath, and realised that my goal was to write faster blog posts, not to write my own f*cking plugin. So I googled for a bit and found an existing plugin and modified it to my likings, making it do exactly what I wanted to achieve.

Engineers are often too fixated on building, and not explicit enough about what problem they are solving. They just want to build shit because it's fun, but often this is not optimal.

Rainymood··on Show HN: Dropbase 2.0 – Turn offline files into live databases
Woah. I need this, but then with Vim bindings ... that would be my ultimate data browser
Rainymood··on Alcohol as a social technology to check the trustworthiness of others (2014)
>Not only is getting drunk pleasant

As someone with asian genes I have this thing called the asian flush [1]. As far as I understand it my body breaks down alcohol too fast resulting in all the waste products flooding my body.

Basically, I'm allergic to alcohol.

Alcohol makes me feel like shit, my heart starts beating in my chest, my head goes red, I get huge headaches. I always thought: why do people like this so much? Then I found out I'm allergic to alcohol.

It kind of sucks because so much socialising in today's world is based on alcohol. It took me 25 years but I've finally managed to accept the fact that I literally just can not drink alcohol. It took me 25 years to be brave enough to stand up to the social pressure of drinking. Geez.

Rainymood··on CityLab has been relaunched under the Bloomberg umbrella
Getting acquihired it seems ... loved the articles, now I probably won't be able to read them anymore. Shame.
Rainymood··on Ask HN: I find writing difficult, how do I make it easy?
Delete your backspace key.
Rainymood··on Automated Work Recordings with OBS Studio and TaskWarrior and TimeWarrior
I love this. Thanks for sharing. I've been streaming myself and recording myself doing something always makes me narrate it through, when you are alone without a camera this feeling of having to "talk yourself through" is not there. This can of course easily be abused by a micro manager but uploading it as a private YT video, never thought of that.

Thanks for sharing, this is the stuff I browse HN for.
