PinkMilkshake··on Ask HN: What languages deploy and are also themselves standalone executables?
Which dialect? As far as I can see, neither Pharo nor Squeak are a standalone executable, and neither deploy standalone executables.

PinkMilkshake··on James Webb telescope reaches its final destination in space, million miles away
I'm a little embarrassed to say this and I don't know exactly what I pictured in my head, but I had no idea these telescopes were so big[1].

I guess I never saw one pictured next to a human. I've only seen pictures of satellites being worked on so I expected something more human sized? It seems so stupid now, especially since earth telescopes are huge.

Interesting! I had never tried. Do you know if the Google IME has the same issue?
PinkMilkshake··on Gemini is Solutionism
> something most English keyboards would not be able to type

English language keyboards are how you type Japanese.

Those keyboards you see with Katakana or Hiragana are rarely used in Japan, pretty much everyone uses romaji.

And it's easy to set up on Windows. I can toggle English and Japanese input with Windows Key + Space.

PinkMilkshake··on How to Be Useless
I don't think so, but I could be wrong. Japanese-style Niito (NEET), Chinese Tang ping (lying flat) and now the Antiwork movement in the West. They all have a similar sentiment, that the promise of a better life through hard work is a lie. I think the pandemic just accelerated what was already underway.
PinkMilkshake··on PUBG Game maker says Apple, Google selling rip-offs in new lawsuit
This isn't the first time they've tried this. They attempted a copyright lawsuit against Epic for Fortnite when it came out.

I don't recall all the details but I remember them implying that they owned the battle royal concept.

PinkMilkshake··on BlackBerry held the tiny keys to my heart
Have you had a look at Unihertz[1]? They're the only company I know who still make alternative style smartphones. They've got two Blackberry style phones.

PinkMilkshake··on Loving Someone with Depression
I thought having multiple conflicting emotions/beliefs/desires was like 99% of the human experience and the source of almost all art, philosophy, etc. (I'm being somewhat hyperbolic)
PinkMilkshake··on Crohn’s Disease: Is the Cold Chain Hypothesis Still Hot?
Apologies, I did read it wrong.

I'm sorry to hear it hasn't worked out for you so far. I hope you find some relief in the future, it's a hell of a disease.

PinkMilkshake··on Crohn’s Disease: Is the Cold Chain Hypothesis Still Hot?
> they cannot 'cure' Crohn's or put it in remission

My partner has had CD since 8 years old. Twice in her life she has been described as "in remission". One being now, as she hasn't had any active disease for a few years.

> And I've also seen that diet and lifestyle choices can definitely affect the severity of a flare

I though the current understanding is there is no dietary intervention for CD. It certainly didn't work on my partner and none of her specialists said it would make any difference.

But I have noticed doctors in different countries have different opinions, so maybe that's the reason?

What ended up "beating" her CD was Stelara (ustekinumab) which is available through the Australian health system (our country of residence) but not in New Zealand (our home country) because their research showed it doesn't work.

PinkMilkshake··on The Yesterweb
I really enjoy browsing neocities. It definitely brings back many vibes of the old web. It's really easy to discover stuff since you can select if your website goes in to the directory. Art and music are the most popular tags and I feel like this is a good sign. Also, people have started forming old school webrings.
PinkMilkshake··on C Is the Greenest Programming Language
How does the hourly energy requirements of a human change per language?
PinkMilkshake··on Ask HN: Where should I buy my next book?
I'd recommend Kinokuniya if you are lucky enough to have one in your city. Then you can waste some money on all that sexy Japanese stationary you are never going to use. Their stores are huge and anything you can't find you can probably find on their online store. I've never asked them to order anything obscure for me, so I'm not sure how well they do there.
PinkMilkshake··on Paper Website: Start a tiny website from your notebook
This is pretty neat. The generated blogs are minimalist (in the good sense); They're easy to look at and read. The HTML it generates is not bad either.

If I had a concern it would be this part:

Although it's very good, there can be instances where it makes mistakes. If you find that your handwriting is often being picked up incorrectly, here are some tips to reduce errors:

  * Make sure you are using a high quality camera to capture an image of your page. You can upload files of up to 5mb.
  * Try to make your handwriting as large and neat as you can.
  * Keep line spacing consistent throughout your writing. It can help to use a ruled notebook.
  * Ensure each line starts from the same left-hand position of your page.
I think this kind of product being successful relies too heavily on It Just Works for it to have these caveats. Personally, I can't write like above; My writing is all over the place.

Also this from the app description:

NOTE: You must have a Paper Website account before using this app.
I feel like you should be able to do everything from the app. Install it, create an account, choose your domain name, and start posting.

Still, cool product, I hope it goes well. I'm sure there are people out there that this would remove a major hurdle for.

And well done for building something from scratch by yourself!

PinkMilkshake··on The Worst Gadgets We’ve Ever Touched
I was also surprised to see that on the list as well. The phones were pretty good. I think the biggest loss was actually Continuum, which to this day still seems like the only good example of convergence.

EDIT: Dex is looking alright these days

PinkMilkshake··on OpenSimWorld, Directory of the OpenSimulator Metaverse
This is the largest list I know of (~176): https://ryanschultz.com/list-of-social-vr-virtual-worlds/

But it's missing many. Others have already mentioned Habitat (1986). Probably one of the most important.

PinkMilkshake··on OpenSimWorld, Directory of the OpenSimulator Metaverse
"Metaverse" is going to become a whole lot more nonsensical as it becomes a buzzword.

Between September and today this company added "We are building the Metaverse of the supply chain." to their front page.

PinkMilkshake··on Open Cobalt: open-source virtual world browser and toolkit
I think there is a trend of virtual world projects pivoting to virtual office meeting/collaboration software when it doesn't do well.
PinkMilkshake··on Open Cobalt: open-source virtual world browser and toolkit
Not really. SecondLife is a closed, centralized platform. I know the client is open source and that Open Simulator exists, but it's not quite the same thing. The Croquet Project[1] (what Open Cobalt is built on) allowed P2P virtual worlds that users could travel between.

PinkMilkshake··on Does Captain Kirk die when he goes through the transporter?
> They cannot both be the original Riker

We don't experience the future, which means our sense of continuity can only be a result of something in the present and/or the past. That isn't violated by teleportation or duplication. When two copies step out of a duplicating teleporter, they are both a continuance of the same person. The "original" Riker is the original in the same sense as you exactly one moment ago are the origin of you in this moment.

PinkMilkshake··on Google employee program claims that America is a “system of white supremacy”
I don't know if the issue is that their observations are incorrect. Many of the things they point out are true. The issue is that if you don't accept their solutions and their re-education programs (which strongly lean towards authoritarian and leftist) then you are still considered part of the problem. It's not that different from when politicians use states of emergency to push in policies they couldn't otherwise.
PinkMilkshake··on Dancoland
I don't often come across a blog post that long that keeps me interested until the end. It's description of systems reminds me a lot of what I've read about cybernetics. I'd love to know what someone who has studied the topic thinks about the way it's explained.

That said, I feel like a few word games had to be played in order to reach it's conclusion; Especially with what I perceive as a somewhat conflated use of the word "purpose".

Perhaps I have to read it through again to make sure I properly understand it.

PinkMilkshake··on Covid in Sydney: Military deployed to help enforce lockdown
Many of my friends and I are in our 30s and got the AZ. Might have to doctor shop a bit, some still seem to be operating on older recommendations.

Also, I went to move my second dose to 4 weeks as recommended by the ATAGI(Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation), but the doctors said the recommendation they got was 6 weeks minimum.

PinkMilkshake··on Ask HN: How do you prevent eyestrain with daily computer use?
For me, the biggest factor seems to be whether or not I've had enough sleep. If I haven't, my eyes get sore, my brow feels tense and text has a "shimmer" to it. A nap is often enough to fix it.
PinkMilkshake··on SpaceX Starlink has some hiccups as expected, but users are impressed
